I make my own from scratch also. The new mushroom soup is flavorless paste, not like it was back in the 70's, so that is what motivated me to invent my own version. I don't have a single mushroom in mine!

This looks great. Thank you, Melissa for also including alternatives for those of us that have dietary restrictions. Much appreciated! I happen to have some homemade chicken bone broth in the freezer, and some green beans...I think I hear your recipe calling my name!
This looks amazing. I started making my own cream of whatever about a year ago and you are so right, the flavor (not to mention health) is so much better! I adore the addition of bacon to it and will be doing that next week for Thanksgiving.
It's amazing how similar our countries are in many ways but how we prepare food and what we eat can be so different. In Australia, we would generally eat green beans simply steamed or sauteed and seasoned with S&P. It's amazing to us that Americans buy pumpkin in cans. Pumpkins are an everyday vegetable here and whilst plentiful in the shops, are often home grown. So many grocery items seem very cheap to us too, even with dollar conversions considered. I can't get over how cheap eggs are in the US. I love you channel as I enjoy growing and preserving my own food too.
@K Barnes thank you for your replies. Of course it's the height of summer in Australia when Christmas rolls around. When I was a kid, we always sat down to a traditional hot toasted meal and Christmas pudding (very British). Thankfully, these days new traditions have been established and Christmas fare is generally a cold, buffet style meal. Seafood, especially prawns, lobster and oysters are very popular. But many families still do the hot meal because they don't feel they've really had Christmas without it. Desserts are cold too. Pavlova is popular as is cheesecake and chocolate ripple log. This is made from plain chocolate biscuits (cookies) briefly dipped into cold coffee or alcohol such as Kahlua, Cointreau etc spread with whipped cream, sandwiched together then covered in cream. After lunch, there's often games of cricket, or water pistol fights 😂😂, swimming, sleeping, movies and catching up with people we've not seen in a while.
Not all americans buy pumpkins in cans, I do not, but grow my own. We also eat steamed green beans. This type of casserole dish is only for special dinners.
@@laurenj.5312 Caged eggs start at around $3.50 per dozen. Free range eggs begin at $5 per dozen for small eggs. I've regularly seen You Tubers shopping and paying just 99 cents for a dozen eggs in the US
I just wanted to thank you again, this was AH-MA-ZING! I can't give up the fried onions so I did those and added the bacon, too. The homemade cream of mushroom soup was SO easy and SO much better than the canned. Bacon definitely took it to the next level, and the cast iron skillet is absolutely the way to go for minimal clean-up. 100% a win.
I am so happy to see this. My husband and daughter gluten free (not by choice), and maybe I’m just naive but I never learnt how to make gluten free green bean casserole. This is perfect, seeing as I have several home canned jars of green beans. Thank you, Melissa for another great video. Btw, your hair is lush and gorgeous
Yes!!! Looks so delicious!! I love all your recipes!! There is no going back to canned cream of mushroom once you've had homemade!!! Love your shirt, you look beautiful as always 🤗❤❤ Wish I had a pantry like yours! I have a cabinet with my can goods but the bulk I have to keep downstairs. 😊 Have a blessed evening! 💛🌞🌻
Hi Melissa, I like the bacon touch, very nice! this is the first time I have seen you. Please keep up the good work, Love from the Land of the Midnight Sun (Alaska)
My mom used to save her bacon grease and use it whenever desired. She loved stove popped popcorn and sometimes would use bacon grease instead of oil. It’s a handy “treat” to have around!
I am a green bean casserole freak, I love it, your recipe looks delicious, so guess it will be the way I make my next batch. I have one question though, why did you drain the beans in the sink? You lose a lot of vitamins in the liquid, I use mine in the can when I make my green bean casserole to add to the soup, and if there is too much, I have a container in the freezer I put liquids like that in, when I have enough I use that container for stock for soups. That freezer container can have liquid from any canned vegetables I use, if I make tomato soup and don't have enough left for another bowl I add that, you'd be surprised when you get around to making soup using that for your stock how flavorful it can be, and it never is quite the same, but never disappointing.
That looks awesome can I put my order in for Christmas oh wait a minute thanksgiving's coming up okay my birthday is tomorrow will that do have a blessed day thank you for sharing that's awesome 😊❤️🙏

This looks SO much better than the standard Campbell's recipe my family has always made. I actually ordered my supplies to make it this morning and was bummed out when I saw your super easy recipe shortly after, but when the groceries arrived the cream of mushroom soup cans were dented beyond safe use. It must be a sign! Will definitely be going your way for Thanksgiving this year. And bacon on top? Ohhh yes.

I read the can and was shocked to say the least, so now, I make my own - sans the noodles (unless I throw in some spaghetti squash). I make my own broth and it is just a pick me up when one is under the weather. I have been trying to figure out if there is a dried mixture that one could use for cream of - soups - but appears that it isn't suited for a dried mixture and it is fast - so that should do. I also was looking for a dried mixture for mushroom (cream or not) for making gravy, guess just best to use the ingredients and do it when you want it??? I am alone and love mushroom gravy, but to do it right, it does take some patience with the fresh onions and mushrooms to get it just right. :-( But soooooo good.
Hated green bean casserole due to mushy green beans BUT if had fresh green beans not over cooked. Good recipe. Will make it. Might use turkey bacon. Thanks

I live in a cold climate in the States where pumpkin growing season is very short, hence the need for canned pumpkin when it isn’t available fresh😊
