I’m a Laphroaig & Lagavulin guy (peat & smoke) but I had a chance to try this and enjoyed it. Much the way I refer to Laphroaig as a “peat bomb”, this HP 17 is a delightful, punchy “fruit bomb”. I didn’t pick up any smoke or charcoal at all. Definitely worth trying.
Thank you for sharing buddy...and for that open words. Always appreciate your kind of reviews to get the right impression for the right decision to buy or not. Keep on going and stay healthy bro ! Greetings 🇩🇪 Moses
Love the Full Volume so I'd probably enjoy The Light and The Dark. Not sure if I've spotted one yet though, obviously very limited. Great review Rob, cheers brother
W6, that is alot of money for the HP light & dark. Without even tasting them, I personally think their are better expressions for less money. I'm cautious about HP, Dalmore and Macallan's marketing to account for their cost. Just my opinion. Great review.
I’ve generally loved everything I’ve tried from HP so ive always wanted to try both the Light & Dark....Its just the price that’s kept me from pulling the trigger. Your review is making me have to put this toward the top of my “spoil myself” list though. 😂.
Let me try to use a rational approach here: Three 17 year old HPs, same new make going in the casks: The Dark (205 €), Light (170 €), Full Volume (83 €), and yes, different casks (for the Light it is even non specific cheap "refill American oak" versus first fill ex Bourbon for the FV), so there is a difference in production cost. Okay, 53% (Light and Dark) vs. 47% (FV) make a bit of a difference, too. Now two come in fancy wooden boxes, one (FV) in a rather standard cardboard box. Conclusion: Let´s be honest, we pay for marketing mainly, not for the content. Welcome to the Edrington universe.
Macallan fine & rare, I totally agree with you, its getting out of control. That is why I stay away from products like that. There are to many other options. I'm not paying for marketing, I pay for what I'm drinking.
Yes in the box? I just bought the light and there was no info on the box or inside. But maybe its only the dark that comes with the booklet. Tank you for your answer
Nice review! Do you have any "insider information" about the casks? Syntactically, I always thought that they "should" have used ex-Bourbon casks for this expression. In the net, I only find the information that, while "The Dark" is made from "1st fill European Oak Sherry casks", while for "The Ligh" they used "refill American Oak" - which previously could have harboured everything, Sherry, Bourbon, ... (followed by another whisky, of course, to make it 'refill'). Heck, thinking about the wording of the official statement, they even could have used a mix of ex-Sherry and ex-Bourbon casks for this expression. So, are we sure that "The Light" is made from *Sherry* casks?
As I mentioned above, the official information from HP for Germany is as follows: The Dark: "First-Fill exSherry"; The Light: "Refill American Oak"; Full Volume: "First-Fill exBourbon", source: www.homeofmalts.com
@Macallan...: Right, that's perfectly the same as I mentioned above (though, from a slightly different source: I got it from an official HP release video, yet the content is the same). The problem is that "Refill American Oak" can virtually mean everything, especially both ex-Sherry and ex-Bourbon. Which means we still don't know anything about the casks, except that they previously also held some other whisky. ;-) So, until there is any other source/information, I tend to go with Rob's statement.
I´m totally with you. However, I ask myself why HP should not clearly mention that it was nothing but ex Sherry refill American oak if it actually IS purely that, but instead publish this vague "Refill American Oak" statement. Based on the fact that there are 28.000 bottles available, I doubt that it is purely refill sherry. There might only be a few refill bourbon casks in the mix, but that´s what I think makes most sense. Anyway, weird information policy.
You know it is funny, because even on Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt it is mentioned "refille American oak casks".... And you are not the first legit source who said a complete opposite. So I am a bit confused now,....:S

Great review Rob, thanks for sharing. Cheers, Ed
TopWhiskies thanks Ed. Cheers!
The “Light” hasn’t made it to my area yet, sounds like a good one. Thanks Rob.
Jason Fisk it should be making its way through Canada by November.
Love the Full Volume so I'd probably enjoy The Light and The Dark. Not sure if I've spotted one yet though, obviously very limited. Great review Rob, cheers brother
Richie Z I have no doubt you’d enjoy both. Here’s Richie.
Great review. Hope to one day compare the light to the dark. Cheers!
The Mash and Drum did one a while back. Fun stuff.

Keith Petersen you’re probably right. I still love both of them.
Appreciate the review Rob. Cheers.
cobrajetjoe thanks buddy. Really nice, but I’m enjoying my last Dram of the Dark and wow.
Great review! I got my wife and I a bottle of Valkri and the Full volume after your review And we are enjoying. Much thanks for that.
Don glad you guys like them brother. Cheers.

Jay Chung would still recommend you try before you buy.
You are getting better and better with every review.
SingleMaltWhiskey thanks brother.
As good as it gets!
Macallan fine & rare too kind brother

Macallan fine & rare you’re not wrong.
I like You Rob.
Macallan fine & rare, I totally agree with you, its getting out of control. That is why I stay away from products like that. There are to many other options. I'm not paying for marketing, I pay for what I'm drinking.
I like your attitude!
Macallan fine & rare agreed! HP overcharges for most of their products with the help of their gimmiky bottles.
Yes in the box? I just bought the light and there was no info on the box or inside. But maybe its only the dark that comes with the booklet. Tank you for your answer
I do remember a cardboard slip with the light on one side and dark on the other.
Hi rob. Tanks for all the great content! Did you get a info booklet/folder with your light?
Kim Jensen in the box? I can remember to be honest. I can check my back up of the dark to see if it has it.
not bias at all, this is an outstanding whisky
Sippers Social Club agreed buddy. 🙏🏻
Cheers homie
Don cheers bud.
Nice review!

Kai L from everything I’ve been told by people surrounding HP they are refill sherry. Although they’ve been mistaken in the past.

Right, totally agree with you on all accounts.
Looks interesting, but I have never found it here... Time for bed!
foodquig Canada will likely get in by October/November.
Where is your Viking hat?
Go Habs more of a Roman Soldier kind of guy.
#39th thumbs up and shared ma man
Seattle206723 thanks brother

Zoltán Dani they are American oak sherry casks. Highland has a large share of American oak seasoned with sherry.
1:47. Oops bro see you on the next one.
Triplecap solid stuff believe it or not. I’d be happy to send you a sample to prove it.
I'd love to try it, you know how I roll...... Damn Blue Jays beat my boys tonight.
Problem is $430 for a 17 year old? Ouch no thanks. You rate the dark 92 for $430? What will it take to score a 100? What's a 100 point Scotch?
Ara Kafafian haven’t met one yet. Not sure they exist.
