  • This is a conversation from 2011 between Thay, environmentalist David Suzuki, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, and David Suzuki Foundation Chair Jim Hoggan, which took place in Vancouver, Canada. They are discussing topics extremely pressing today, like climate change, environmental collapse, and how to bring about the collective public awakening needed to restore health to the Mother Earth.
The conversation was structured around the following questions:
    1. A Lehman Brothers banker, named Paul Mazer, gave American business in 1930 when the age of consumerism was beginning: “People need to be trained to desire, to want new things even before the old have been entirely consumed... Man’s desires must overshadow his needs.” What are your reactions to this?
    2. What gives you hope that we can bring about the collective awakening needed to restore health to the planet?
    3. Oil industry groups over the past few decades have financed misinformation campaigns to cast doubt on climate science. Today 45 per cent of Americans mistakenly believe there is disagreement among climate scientists that global warming is even happening, this number is up 12 percent since 2008. The number climate scientists saying Climate Change isn’t happening is actually closer to zero. It seems to be very easy to pull the wool over the eyes of the public, why are we so gullible? What do you think we can we do to change from deniers of the environmental problems we face to responsible stewards of the environment?
    4. What responsibility does government have for solving these problems? How do we motivate government to do the right thing?
    5. Social science research in Canada and the U.S. shows that public mistrust is at an all-time high. People believe Government and business say one thing and do another. They don’t trust Government; they don’t trust business and wonder about each other. This is particularly true when it comes to the environment. This mistrust has led to a kind of social paralysis where people believe their own actions won’t make a difference. How do we overcome this mistrust?

So correct, even as we live now in 2021, stands beloved Thay's words that without spiritualty, the job cannot be done. It would have beeen interesting to have also seen an update on any implementation and its outcomes with this advice if it was taken by the Vancouver Mayor!

Nice to know that the best way to solve problems is to begin controlling the feeling of despair. To calm down. It seems so easy.
    Thank you Thay!

Incredible! The section where Thich talks about learning to die was my favorite part. It ties right in with Bruce Lee's famous "the art of dying" quote

This year we are going to have elections for president and members of the parliament in Brazil. I hope that people are wise enough to choose the right politicians. The result of the last election was catastrophic.

Why is there not more of a discussion regarding adopting a vegan diet as being a solution towards helping the environment?

Basis of Budhism is reincarnation and law of karma .The necessity of Budhism is impermanence sufferings and concept of no soul . Budhism guides us to stay in human world and heavens until final stage is attained 🙏🙏🙏

I'm curious when this video was recorded. It says the conversation is from 2001, but at the 38:42 mark he says 'since 2008'. Anyone know?
