- The Ghetto was established in 1555 in the Rione Sant’Angelo, near the Tiber River in the southern part of Campo de’Fiori. Its borders were laid down in a Papal Bull along with various discriminatory laws about what professions Jews could and could not hold. One of the accepted professions, that of selling fish, still lends its name to streets in the area of the old fish market. Though the neighborhood now commands some of the highest property prices in Rome, the original Jewish Ghetto (known simply as the Roman Ghetto) was walled-in and crowded. It was built on low, malarial land subject to regular floods from the Tiber. Life was grim until the Ghetto walls were torn down in 1888.

Still does not look like people can go down into Argentina yet. Must be running behind schedule to complete the construction.
The Jewish Quarter lived under a curfew. Gates locked each night; opened in the morning.
Interesting how the word Ghetto has become a term for an awful way of living. The truth is that humans have crossed the globe for centuries and where many of a faith or nationality have settled in another country they live together in neighbourhoods where they can support each other which is a good thing. It's not about isolating yourself from your new place you live but making sense of it and allowing for a period where you can adapt. We all congregate among others who are like us and it makes us stronger
