  • The Elysia company makes some serious transparent compressors suitable for mastering, but enough mojo to become one useful swiss army knife compressor.

Interesting. Would you recommend this for vocal tracking just going in so I can slightly grab some of the initial peaks going in and then use analog modeling plug-ins later in the daw to get color if I need it? But in such a way where it's not obvious and pumping but subtle almost like a 1176 but without the color just with the dynamics controlled with the pops and sudden clicks and all that?

Yeah, I've been looking for a clean, punchy, and controllable compressor to add to my mastering chain (already have the tubes and color covered with my IGS Tubecore, Massive Passive, and Overstayer MAS). I've had my heart set on the Neve MBP...but the more I read up on the Xpressor, the more I think it might be just what I'm after. You have both so any thoughts you have would be great. Thx.

I will say this, I can not stress enough how amazing the MBP is. But the xpressor is one heck of a compressor. If your looking for clean compression the xpressor can get it done, and then some. Where the neve the limiter and compressor does have a sound, and the stereo field editor for bumping the frequencies mid side is unbelievable. The harmonic has came in handy to give a vocal and or instruments life without boosting. They both are great, for the money the xpressor is a lot less, and every bit worth that and then some

@@DougJenkins Hey forgot to ask you about the usefulness of the Xpressor as a limiter (since it does have the infinity ratio, GRL, and the 'auto fast' mode which seems super useful). The limiter is one of the main functions that I really liked about the MBP, so I'm wondering how the Xpressor compares in that aspect.

@@audiokemestry The limiter is extremely accurate and transparent, it is more agressive then the limiter on the mbp, but set just right, it will brick wall with the best of them

Is it good enough for brickwall limiting/loudness maximizer in a mastering scenario?

your friendly neighborhood mastering engineer here. No, very very few hardware units are capable of doing that, with the Bettermaker Mastering Limiter being the only totally trustworthy option. For limiting, in the box is generally considered to be better since it can look ahead and catch the transients so they don't clip. If you don't want to drop the money on the Bettermaker, I highly recommend the Plugin Alliance BX True Peak Limiter. I've used many other limiters out there and it is by far my favorite.
