Thats a big beautiful tractor! I once owned a US military M123 built by MACK it was the tank mover after the M26 Dragon Wagon my truck had an 844 CI LeRoi petrol engine in a V-8 configuration the tractor I owned according the specs in the truck got .75 mpg had to believe less than 1 mpg!

Drove one with crane on back came out of depo. Went in to hedge and house. I said sterling doesent work. Stand up to turn it
They did a whopping 3 mile per gallon

That truck has a rolls royce meteor v12 petrol, its a merlin without the blower, made in england.

4-speed crash box with three-speed transfer box. Worm- drive axles with epicyclic reduction.

I think that whoever told you that might be thinking of the Scammell / Leyland Contractor. They had an unusual gearbox.
