  • Tennis analytical guru Craig O’Shannessy returns to the podcast to recap all the action from the 2023 US Open, which saw Novak Djokovic & Coco Gauff claim the trophies. O’Shannessy explains how Novak Djokovic was able to conquer the challenges and pressures in yet another title run, and why American Ben Shelton is well on his way to establishing himself as major threat.
The Director of “Brain Game Tennis” analyzes how Coco Gauff came back in the final against Aryna Sabalenka, and what the American teenager has improved mightily en route to her first grand slam title. And O’Shannessy explains why the match itself should be required viewing for all junior tennis players.

About the celebration, it is very simple. Novak showed Ben that he has no business trash-talking the GOAT, which he did during the match. If you want to do it first you have to earn it.

That and if you’re going to trash talk your opponent you should expect the same trash talk energy from your opponent

These are the best takes - which I also had while thinking through this - on the Djokovic-Ben celebration. Also, for some context, a commenter elsewhere wrote:
"directly from my friend who was at the match last evening.
    2 instances:
    1. At the beginning of the match, shelton at 2 - 2 yelled to his father from the other side, 'this guy has no game'
    2. In 3rd set, at 4-4 shelton fired a 145 mph ace and during the crossover this f00l ben shelton apparently stared down GOATkovic. And the rest is history. Who in their right mind stares down an opponent, let alone novak. To clarify, it wasnt ben's celebration. Its his arrogance GOAT took it personal about."
There's a handful of evidence showing Shelton not giving decent respect to Novak or acknowledging who he is. Maybe it's from his football background, maybe it's that he was a fan of someone else, maybe it's from college tennis mentality, but it's been to an abnormal level. If you're going to play that game, expect it back at you - at least, if you're playing a true competitor (like Novak is). I agree that it all may have given Ben more respect for Novak and he may have even enjoyed it. In any case, Novak acted like a sports great, not a tennis country club pro, and many will love that while many will hate it.
Loved Craig's analysis of this match tennis-wise, too. :D

having been on the other side of this, i think that is simply a case of an old man bullying and being very nasty to a much younger guy.
To, yes - ‘Put him in his place’. But what kind of ‘man’ does this?
      i will explain.
It is the kind of old man and feasts upon psychologically terrorising much younger people. They feed upon the young like vampires.
At clubs, i have a lot of old men blatantly cheating against me, trashtalking, serving before i was in position etc. etc.. So much so that their wives and contemporaries turned against them. A lot of old men can be very ugly and hateful to the young and this is exactly what i observed in Djokovic.

Ben Shelton is on the wrong way to establishing himself as major threat with this cocky attitude. He needs to learn very important lesson in sports and in life in general: Never disrespect your opponent. Novak took all his opponents seriously, regardless of their ranking. The kid took opposite approach, and disrespected players who were in the same league with him, and even more, he disrespected the Goat. He needed to be served a piece of humble pie....

The "up and comers" can't even beat a 20 year-old Alcaraz, or even win an ATP tournament, much less beat the G.O.A.T.

Novak has become the most gracious and respectful in defeat. I think he sees himself like a father figure for many of these younger guys, and simply appreciates what he's gotten to do in the sport and feels he's got nothing much left to prove, so has the capacity to build up others.

Problem for Novak in Laslo Djere match is that he likes him. When Novak like the opponent he never play with an edge, until he start realizing that he will loose. He actually play his best matches against opponents that he really don’t like

Yeah Kamau's explanation of cumulative pressure is one of the best takes of how Coco won. I think people got drunk on Serena-Sharapova-Osaka/power tennis of the last 2 decades and think that this is the only way to win in women's tennis. I dont think that people understand that you cant just rip winners for 3 sets and that defensive players still win slams in tennis.

I felt Tsitsipas started putting more pressure in AO final when he started chipping back vs full swing. Same Alcaraz in the past matches. I feel because they take away pace and Nole "struggled" to generate his own in the next shot, which specially Alcaraz would handle and equalize the point. Tsitsipas did it in the 3rs set of the AON which is the one that went to tiebreak. I think that's why Shelton went that route. It'd be interesting if Craig analyzed this theory with his statistics!

  • @greenhammer1148

Shelton started the mocking first. Look into the 3-4 of the 3rd set. When Djokovic sent the ball long, look at the gesture Shelton made.

To say that Coco won without a forehand is overexaggerating. Her fh is not the best, but some of those high/heavy fh got her some points and kept her in some rallies.

I listened to the video upto midpoint with the intention of getting mainly Craig's take on the men's side. Then I gave up. Kamau sort of keeps his views unnecessarily lengthy and complicated. He should express them in a short and concise way and pass the ball to Craig.

Traveling 3 hours to and from work is how most New Yorkers live. It's draining to us too. The money is in Manhattan but it's too expensive to live there, so we travel. Novaxxx goes in the bathroom, consumes his drugs then comes back out and wins. I wish you guys would've talked about how easy Novaxxx draws are.
