Portal™ is a new single player game from Valve. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal has been called one of the most innovative new games on the horizon and will offer gamers hours of unique gameplay.
The game is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life® 2's Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation.

bro you know how many times I repeated chamber 14 thinking i had to get 9 steps instead of 10 please for the love of god label them based on how many steps are required not how many you lucked out on
on 2:05 you could land to the "window", which will save 3-5 steps (have to add jump before falling to the floor blue portal)
UPD: also, landing after long jumps - character keep moving for 1-2 steps. It could be stopped by moving to opposite direction.

I am actually baffled that things like portal bumping seem to be necessary to overcome these challenge maps. I'm not sure whether to be absolutely pissed at, or impressed by the devs... Thank you for the guide.

i could complete some rooms w/o portals, i could complete rooms in even less time the devs could intend (except chamber 18, that camera shit is pure fking luck and had to try over 40 or more to get the camera in the right pos) but steps is the dumbest thing of them all, doing anything is a step and i just cant

Im back again, so, i used to play portal always on pirated versions, but i finally bought the game, didn't expect to find a comment of mine over here so, im doing these again, it's becoming easier but never actually easy, this challenge is bs and we know it

A good tip is you can quick save in the middle of a run. Still a pain in the ass but much more manageable

I struggled with these at first, and thought something was wrong. Turns out, something was.
If your step counter is incrementing by one when landing through a portal, then it is likely you have the Options > Portals > Portal funnel option disabled.
Make sure to *enable* the Portal funnel option - it will make completing the least steps challenges much easier.

6:47 When your levels are so hard and unbeatable by normal means, you have to use exploits and glitches to be able to beat it.
I guess it's easy to realize but I still haven't read any comment about how you should save after each milestone so that you can load and continue from there if you make a mistake.

Well this just ruined any fun i was having with these challenges. A good tip though is you can save part way through a level. So if you get halfway through perfect save so you don't have to redo that part

2:03 - 2:11 If you let yourself gain momentum here instead of going for what the recorder went for, then shoot a portal at the extended platform wall... you can skip doing the stairs section altogether!
2:30 - 2:36 Instead of shooting one portal within one of the small rooms, just shooting above one of the raising platforms also works and can cut down on steps, too!

Must say, this is an insanely useful guide. Thanks to this and your other two challenge guides i've managed to make excellent strides towards 100%ing one of my favorite games. Personally I would've seen if a portal bump at 2:04 would've worked, but this works too!

I somehow lucked out and got the 6:50 trick first try having never done it before and the sense of power was unfathomable
this would be easy and all if the portals didn't take control of my mouse and keyboard and fling me halfway across the fucking map while i'm trying to do these. i usually like 100 percenting achievements and all but i think if i try to 100% the "least steps" category i'd end up in a mental institution.

I was intimidated watching this and didn't think it would even be possible, but I got it in a couple hours. Helps to save after every tiny bit of progress you make so you can reload if you took too many steps.
I CANT EVEN DO THE FIRST ONE! AFTER HOURS OF FAILING AT BRINGING THE CUBE ONTO THE BUTTON I TOOK A BREAK. NOW I HAVE MADE IT TO THE END WITH 11 STEPS LIKE 5 TIMES NOW AND IM SCREAMING
Bruh how does he even get into the first portal with only 2 steps, it takes me at LEAST 4 just from jumping off the pod and the landing momentum 💀
@@jazz-cat00 It's late, but it's very dumb. Basically jump when it says 1 step, and just pray your feet don't even slightly graze the steps on the way down to the portal. It feels completely random. These challenges can be cheated on PC very easily but unfortunately on Xbox, this is just bullshit

@@jazz-cat00 If you're on Xbox, only tips I can give is that there is a workaround about how to use a couple of the cheat codes in The Orange Box and still get the achievements (they're not always helpful but they can be), and the video typically isn't the exact amount for gold medals, so the video leaves some wiggle room to add in some extra steps. If you use cheats, then funnily enough, it's the first level or two that's the hardest since it's the shortest levels and ones with the least amount of wiggle room/help that can be gotten from cheats.
If you are on PC though, simply just go to the end without caring about the score, and right before you step in the eleveator, input this one specific console command to reset your score (no matter the challenge) to 0. I don't remember the command so you'd have to google it yourself if this is the platform you're on
Least time - Great Mastery of the game and source engine will award you well here
Least portals - A challenging puzzle that can be beaten with good strategy
Least steps - Makes Cuphead, Hollow Knight, Dark Souls and Elden Ring look like a 2 piece picture puzzle
This game mode makes you say:

But then it's insane because I expect your score to be WAY under, but it's right at/ barely under the Gold threshold...!!!

@@schnub4765 if you jump just after your 2nd step, the jump will not count as a step. Landing doesn't count as a step either if you don't mess up.
You only get the third step if you don't shoot the portal off. Jumping is a guaranteed step.

To be honest it was was the hardest for me too. It’s like everything has to be precise. One step over and you’re done. There’s no room for error.

the step challenges are the most annoying fucking thing ever. theyre so unconsistent. so many times i was about to fall into a portal, i put the portal somewhere else, it didnt count as a step, yet sometimes it does.
And when you land on a cube, it just starts to count up infinitely.

Thx for the guide, these actually aren't as bad as I thought it was, sure it was difficult but it never felt infuriating, it felt nice to be a lazy little test subject and just shoot portals at your feet to progress
For chamber 16, what I found easier, was in the room with the first turret, bump your portal through the glass pane on the ceiling. This may take several tries, so be sure to save once you get it, so you can reload. Once you're on the other side, drop the turret to the left onto the one on the right, then throw the one right next to you to kill it. Then, put one of the turrets on the button, and complete the level the way it is shown in the video. Several less steps taken and easier.

I manage to finish all gold medals for every challenges in one evening thanks to your videos 😏
In the first chamber they are able to get to the 1st button with only 2 steps counting. When I try I always get 3. No matter how I try to emulate what they are doing it is always 3. Could anyone PLEASE explain how to get to the 1st button with 2 steps?

My trick is to make sure the orange portal is kinda lapping over with the starting chamber, if that makes any sense. Just look at the was the guy made his portal

I know this is really late but you have to walk for as long as possible while it only counts for 1 step and then jump. I practiced it a bit and i can do it basically every time now it's really consistent.

The fact that you have to take advantage of some glitches just to complete the achievements seems like poor design.
I think that I’ve already spent more time on the first one than I have on beating the whole game and I still haven’t beaten it yet 😢
Update: I just beat the level because i figured out that you had to run and jump for the first step to save an extra one for the end

Figured out least portals and least time more or less on my own, only using one guide for each. This? I gave up before I even began
EDIT: I actually somehow saved 2 steps on chamber 15, and if I were better at portal edging I could've saved even more! I portaled into the drop room and shot the panel you fling out of from the higher doorframe. Came in at a cool 41 steps. There was a brief period of time where I seemed to have enough momentum to fling without use of the room, I think by way of portal closing physics creating barely enough push force to make it possible to fling over the wall without ever taking a step, but trying to replicate it became maddening so I'm guessing the frame window for it is miniscule. I hate these challenges, but the room to save steps is fascinating

If you guys can't get the steps needed, try saving in between segments, I got 26 steps on chamber 16 like that
for future ppl trying to complete this: the "commentary mode" actually counts as cheating, so make sure to have that off when trying to complete this achievements, I was trying to clear chamber 17 and when I was done it didn't count, I didn't even realized I had commentary mode on and thought it was a bug T^T

anyone having problems getting the camera/ using the camera in chamber 18 for the door, you can use the computer tower in the broken wall. works the same way (and is easier imo) but not ideal for if youre trying to beat the wr for least steps in chamber 18 (i hope nobody actually tries to beat the least steps wr)

Jeez. I made it. Just one evening for “Least steps”. Use Save/Load and try to make “checkpoints” with small amount of steps.

For Chamber 17, portal bumping isn't necessary. In the main area, you can use the cube to redirect the orbs from a single launcher into each receptor without moving. If you make it to the main area with ~85 steps, you can just barely make it. Still an absolutely ludicrous solution.

Place blue, place orange at start, jump 1 step, land 2 steps, hit edge before even making it to orange 3 steps......
Make sure to enable Portal Funneling Option in the settings to prevent extra Steps when landing trough a portal.
Edit: This saved my sanity and I was able to completely do all achievements for Portal 1.
This one took the longest for me, surprisingly. Everything has to be precise.

I just though "like damn i'll do it 100% portal" but when i installed portal and loaded it i gave up as those "least steps" are the stupiediest challenge ever, it counts steps even when you don't move damn

If you're on PC, there's a way to cheat by using the console commands to reset the count whenever you want, so you can get to the end of the levels and just before getting on the elevator, reset the count to 0.
If you're on Xbox, good luck.
on chamber 15 i accidently landed on the ledge 2:05, i'm not good enough to replicate it but could be a great way to save steps.

you are absofuckinglutely gaslighting me about this first jump in chamber 13. It is humanly impossible to make that jump in only 2 steps. It is automatically 3 steps every time. I am being lied to. I want to die

with "cheated" you mean by portal bumping or you did smthing that is beyond the game to get those achievements?
@danilotaza Basically, if you use the console to no clip to the elevator, then set sv_cheats to 0, then save the game, it won't recognize that you cheated and will add to the achievement progression

If you exit the portal going up and remove it from underneath you, it doesn't count as a step. He does this many times through the video.

called the portal bump glitch. i have no idea what actually happens or how it works, but its used to go through glass panes mostly.
@@marchey304 Well, basically if you shoot a portal inside a different color portal the new one appears right next to the existing one. That was an intended mechanic as far as I know. Because of the glitch though, that will also work through glass panes and some walls too.
if you put a portal too close to a thin enough wall, shooting another portal there will bump it to the other side as the game doesn't know it shouldn't do that.
It's a 'glitch' and it was never an intended mechanic but valve ran with it instead of taking it out. The game doesn't care if its glass or not, OP could've skipped past the dialog in 16 doing the same thing through a closed door. Watch the speed challenges it gets used a few times. There's a sweet spot to hit when you're aiming through the portal.
