    This is slightly different to my usual videos but it was too long to include in a Short. I came across this viral magnet online and was shocked how many child safety rules it breaks. For the record, this is NOT a product for kids so if you're an adult and only use it in an environment without children then it's perfectly fine. However real life is not perfect, people with kids visit other homes, or they might end up in offices or other kid-free spaces. What's most sketchy about this product is that it appears very harmless and cute, so many people might not realise it's not something that should be kept away from kids. Toddlers also have a way of finding stuff, and the brightly coloured popit-style design is clearly attractive.

      Magnets are dangerous for young children, that's why this isn't a child's toy meant for toddlers and doesn't need to be recalled. It’s definitely an overreaction to make a generalized statement telling everyone, including adults and teenagers who don’t live with small children, not to buy a product intended for adults and older kids because it happens to be dangerous for toddlers and to call it "the WORST viral product in the world"

  • @thevintagebookwolf4953
    @thevintagebookwolf4953 6 місяців тому +19

    I think it is an overreaction with legitimate concerns and safety in mind.
    And you might say "they're viral and that can influence children".
    Often the children left to scroll are often older than toddlers and probably have just a smidge of sense not to eat them.
    Children younger than that have no way of purchasing them, unless its through a parent.
    To say that these are too dangerous for main stream use. Is to say that anything that remotely poses a threat to a child, shouldn't exist.
    Regardless of who it is marketed to.
    My paints come in colourful tubes, what if a child eats them?
    My wall paper has fruits and has wall hooks that look like cats...
    What if a child eats them?
    Rubber band ball?
    Paper clips?
    Stationary of any kind?
    Puzzles?
    Home decor?
    If they do pose a threat to a child. Then it falls to you as the guardian, too either store it safely or not have it at all.
    If they grab it off a shelf, its your job to catch them before they hurt themselves.
    They have no frame of reference, they dont understand danger.
    So it falls to you, and only you to keep them safe from things that may not be so safe to such a tiny tot.
    It's the equivalent of blaming a pool, for having water in it that the child could drown in.
    Whilst also not teaching your child to float.
    Just because its dangerous to your child doesnt mean its dangerous to everyone else.
    If you think its dangerous for your child, keep it away from your child.

  • @CharliesOpus
    @CharliesOpus 6 місяців тому +67

    I definitely get the concern and think you make reasonable and valid points (I, too, have a kid, so I get it) but I don’t think it’s that bad to be declared the worst in the world.
    If you must have them, just don’t put them within reach of little hands. Put them higher up on the fridge or hang your magnet boards higher. As parents, it’s really *your* responsibility to keep things out of reach that are potential hazards and decide if an item is safe to buy. It’s common sense - although I suppose that’s in short supply these days 😅
    I appreciate the effort in bringing awareness to the potential hazards; I hope you’re not discouraged by the comments!
    Everyone knows their kid best, if you think _your_ kid is likely to find a way to get to them regardless of your precautions, save yourself the headache (and potential tragedy) and don’t buy them until they’re no longer trying to eat everything. My kid was never a climber, so I probably wouldn’t have worried so much about it as long as they were high up - I also followed him around everywhere he wandered too _because_ he would try to put things in his mouth. Just be diligent.

When my family had visited, my dad had irresponsibly left me alone, and I had managed to eat a good amount of my aunts crafting supplies . No one was aware of my endeavor until my diaper was changed, luckily nothing happened the only thing that happened was my dad was forced to buy my aunt more beads(she washed the eaten beads and had used them for a embroidery project, she didn't feel right throwing away the bead and she didn't want to sell them to her customers.) The frustrating thing is that my dad never learned and he continued to allow similar things to happen with both myself and my sisters, I love my dad but he was very much irresponsible( one of the many reasons my mom divorced my dad, I honestly feel bad for my step mom sometimes)

I burn incense and have matches which arent safe for kids. I dont think its too much to ask for adults to look at a product description and choose if its a good fit for their house hold. A product isnt stupid just because its not kid friendly. I just dont get how its a problem if the adult in the house would have had to go to the web site pick it out and buy. Like do people not read descriptions. Heck if i buy something for one of my siblings kids i check descriptions and open it to make sure its safe then i put it all back in the box.

Besides I would assume the viral video probably shows them using it so the consumer should know that there are small parts.
    While it would be nice to have a warning label, the creators are not obliged to do so, especially if it wasn’t marketed towards kids in the first place. Maybe they just liked the aesthetic of those rubber toys and thought it would be a cute idea as a magnet.

It all comes down to the parents deciding what to get for their child after understanding the risks. If parents are just blindly buying ‘toys’ not specifically marketed at children for their kids without knowing anything and then getting upset because it isn’t suitable for their child, then I think that’s more negligence then anything

My mom managed to get it out, thankfully, but it's scary just how big an object babies can fit in their mouth. All things considered, I'd say if it's not the same size as their own head, it's a risk 😅

    Many magnets I own have sharp edges too, which deters anyone from trying to swallow them. Ultimately you’re correct that there should be some warning for these.

    I never knew about if its smaller than/able to go through the toilet roll hole it can be swallowed by a child glad I now know!❤
    Also I dont understand why they don't use stronger magnets because like you said they can fall off so if you wanted to put artwork or memo onto the fridge it can just fall off 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

    I think they can be easily put out of reach of children. Your toddler isn’t the same height as your fridge. Can easily be put higher. If it falls off the fridge you should notice & why would a child be near the fridge unsupervised anyways? To call it the worst viral product in the world is ridiculous and a definite overstatement.

  • @sparksparkle
    @sparksparkle 6 місяців тому +1

    I think its very much meant to be used on a refrigerator, to stick things upon it, very probably not a toy, But when you said the magnets were weak I definetly agree with your concern of it being a choking hazard for small children or even dogs because if they fall off of the fridge they can be grabbed off the floor.

    Kids toys with magnets, as in actual toys made for children, have already been known to cause enough problems, especially with small children who don't know any better, and that's *with* the magnets usually being fully visible. This is very dangerous for little ones.

    I don't have a child, the idea of this being an issue hasn't crossed my mind. Thanks for raising awareness, even if it seems a bit "overly protective" at first, after thinking about it, it totally makes sense why these are more of a problem than regular hard-plastic fridge magnets.

    Fidget "toys" aren't really toys and they're not designed for children. I can understand why your daughter liked the fidget toys that you gave her, but she's not really their target demographic. They're made for stressed out adults, people with anxiety, people with ADHD, etc. Definitely not toddlers.
    However, this is really helpful info for anyone who has small children and decides to buy these. Or even people with dogs! LOL If they were scented, that would be kind of cool, but so much more dangerous. When my dog was young, she would literally eat ANYTHING.

      @@systematicirony666 Where did I say that toddlers can't have autism or ADHD?! 🤦‍♀I've worked in medical marketing for over 20 years, I know a thing or two about the topic. Fidget toys can be helpful for many children, but not EVERY fidget toy is right for EVERY child. And, no, toddlers are not one of their "biggest demographics." Did you just pull that stat out of the air?
      Yes, many of them are marketed towards children, but we're talking about children of a certain age. There are some toys that toddlers can fidget with, but anything with removable parts, small pieces, magnets, etc. is not appropriate for them and is not marketed towards them. (If there isn't a warning on the package, the company could and should be sued.) While children can often benefit from toys like these, they are only appropriate once the child is past the age of wanting to put everything in their mouth. You know...Like toddlers.
      Just because something falls in the "toy" category doesn't mean it's appropriate for all ages. I shouldn't have to explain that.
      I looked up magnetic fidget toys and every one that I found was recommended for kids age 8 and up. That's not a toddler!
