Home Alone's Secret Meaning: Adulting is Hard

  • What's the secret message of Home Alone? The Macaulay Culkin movie was meant for kids and perfectly captured their fears and desires -- but it also has a deep meaning that speaks to young adults, in our era of perpetual kidulthood. Are we not all, in a sense, "home alone"? If you like this video, subscribe to our channel or support us on Patreon: / thetake

      Honestly, I kinda feel like Kevin was justified in putting the robbers through so much. I mean they robbed the neighborhood, were going to rob his house and were trying to kill him once they realized he was a smart kid. I'd kinda want their pain, too, so it's a little annoying seeing everyone call Kevin a psychopath when in reality he's just a scared and brave kid defending himself in extreme but effective ways.

    • @ladybug7273
      @ladybug7273 4 роки тому +17

      Casey Wilde They should be calling Kevin a scapegoat. He’s constantly ignored and the family forgets him at home because he’s invisible to them and go on a “family” vacation. The poor kid has to defend himself against robbers/possible murders and he’s to blame? Being labeled a psychopath?! That’s scapegoating!!!

    Once again, "The Take" completely blows my mind on a childhood classic that I thought I knew. 🤯 As a child, we just want to be older so that we can have independence, and be taken seriously.
    However, once we ARE adults, all we want is for someone to tell us what to do, to come and sort out all our dilemmas. It's telling that most of us dreaded being told to go to bed early, and now, it's something that we dream about! 😅

    • @oooh19

      That film Big, I know which film your talking about. In the adult world in 1980s were, how can I put it? Industrial and workplace offices, tax machine style 80s but felt kinda lost in them ownselfs trying to get by. The 80s were a time of growth but information like the internet today was not understood and yet perhaps felt polarised by all the contradicting noises of adulthood back then which tv (or romance books) seemed the answer of explaining back then, situations which come off as relatable but satire comedy and dodging lagitable today but then not considered questions. For us, as adults and how we look at the world is just feels like we are touching the surface of many polerising noises, being more conscious of it.

    • @Samrules888
      @Samrules888 4 роки тому +3

      I think that's the same message but a more positive take. In the 80's and 90s adulthood had a lot of frivolity. "Adult" furniture from a reputable store. Separate paper products for eating cleaning and blowing of one's nose. New cars from a dealership wi thg h tons of paperwork and markup. But thg he younger genera thg in would streamline all of that. And maybe replace them with new stuff. That's why you see all these puff pieces saying "millenials are destroying x" in the 60s and 70s it was baby boomers are destroying x with their counterculture. Then generation x is destroying x with their computers.

      There's a lot of talk about how irresponsible Millennials are or how immature they are but to be frank the Boomers didn't really give us much go work with. However is not fair to solely put the blame on millennials. This is a result of horrible parenting, telling your kids that they are special (even though they are not), giving them participation trophies, and sparing the rod. This is extremely harmful, it gives kids a sense of entitlement that turns into Narcissism.

    I did find parts of the movie funny but it had me beyond pissed.
    I remember asking my mom how the heck Did they forget him.
    I was so mad about it,he was like the only blonde child in the bunch and he had to protect himself from 2 grown men.
    I remember being so mad that I shouted "If it was me I would have called cps." Mind you I was 7 or 8 years old and the oldest of 5 kids.

    This is very much a Christmas movie, so like most moralizing around Christmas it pits Consumerism and holliday rush against whatever you think the reason for the season actually should be --probably something deep about family and human connection and not leaving people isolated and inner richness. It's kind of the vision of a Christmas Carol (Notice the adult friend character is "Marley" like Jacob Marley, the first instructive spirit of that to Christmas proof Scrooge). Further in, it's the manger scene of a child protected from persecution and united with family and friends. Like our Christmas mythology, however, the movie has a lot of ambivalence about such warm and fuzzy christmas ideals. It takes a lot of delight in every kid's fantasy of determining their own fate in every self-indulgent way possible and proving themselves capable of outsmarting adults to live their trivial-but-fun life endlessly. We'd rather remember Kevin like this, even if he is grossly immature with his smarts and independence and indeed BECAUSE he is and we want to have that fantasy too. I feel like Ferris Bueller's day off is in the same ballpark. The closest female equivalent I can find with the same "If only I had the power and the money" questions for girls is something like "The Princess Diaries". It follows a similar arc. Wouldn't it be fun to be independent and rich and powerful and treated like an adult? But darned if it would fix all the issues you usually have with human relationships. That considered, what should adulthood look like.

    I remember wondering why the police didn't care enough to check INSIDE the house and gave up so easily! I also thought how the director framed the shots the movie was kind of like a horror movie (and not just a family Christmas movie). A lot of kids movies in the 80s and 90s were pretty dark.

    Depends on how you grew up. I am much happier figuring things out on my own, with the help of therapists and a few of the right people. Choosing the life I want to live, even with all the challenges of adulthood. Childhood was not fun, childhood was a prison. Glad it's over, bring on the adulthood any day!

    It's hard if you call it "adulting" because there are those who COULD have it together but dont have the life skills or impulse control to do so, and there are those who have an actual raw deal. The former are the ones who call it "adulting" as if it's an act.

    You know... it's March. Close-ish to Easter.
    And there's an animated movie that set around the Easter season.
    Do you have anything to analyse about Rise of the Guardians?
    Well, except maybe the religious undertones of the movie.
    Or maybe have a thought on Abominable?
    Also, great video. Loved the idea of it portraying adulthood and the expectations versus the reality... It's quite noticeable within the movie, but not too in your face, which is probably what makes the movie a classic enough for it to be played on TV every. single. Christmas season.

    Yeah, most people are assholes and dysfunctional idiots. That doesn't mean you're doomed. You can still survive. You can use creativity to deal with problems. There are some people who aren't dysfunctional idiots. I felt like that was a positive message as a kid.

    "Being a grown-up sort of sucks". Couldn't have said it better. As a child, you think that adults are like some different species or something, people who have everything sorted out, who know how life works. When you get to be an adult, you notice that you're basically the same child you always were, only that now people expect you to behave as if you weren't. And you buy into the illusion that everyone else is an adult who has everything sorted out, etc. You fail to notice that they're also just faking it.

    I fucking hate adulting. I wish I could just regress to when I was 12, only worrying about video games and going to the library to read my favorite books and sometimes joining my brothers in their "fight club" and definitely joining them on adventures in our nearby creek, hunting for crawfish to collect. Those were the days. Before fucking debt and commutes and micromanaging bosses and fucking panic attacks and dreaded emails and meetings and the endless trips to get groceries. God...
