Glad to see you doing a ring. I made my wedding band from damascus with a rose gold inlay to match my wife’s ring. The damascus was purchased but still turned out great. This was all before I got my lathe, would’ve been so much easier.
Alec if you get a machinable expanding collet you could easily turn the outside of the ring concentric on your lathe. I have used this process on the Monarch lathe at my work to make dozens of bushings. Also a boring head on your mill could get you any sized whole you can imagine.
I really liked the editing in this one. The setup to weld the damascus went well with the music. The cuts from you saying what you were going to do, to actually doing it were great. Try making the inside of the ring convexed very so slightly which greatly makes it easier to slip on and off but not just fall off. It works really well if done right
Hey Alec, quick mill tip for you. Buy some "NC Spotting Drills" instead of centre drills. They are less likely to break and are designed for spotting - centre drills are quite fragile and are specifically for preparing stock for centre use in lathe.
Please stop jump cutting so much it’s so jarring to watch the video when every time Alec is trying to say something and you cut to the next word, it’s important to have a second or 2 of space sometimes or it just feels like I’m being force feed the video I don’t know if anyone else feels this way with the new editor but it just feels like he is cutting way to much and it’s making the video not flow properly
The bit at 7:23 is cut that way to make his point more fluid. If there were a pause in between each cut he'd sound like Captain Kirk. The cuts are necessary because he probably gets tongue tied and/or digresses too much and needs them to make the scene make sense.
Hey Alec, just a little tip for your fume extractor, should be at a distance of maximum 1.5 times the diameter of the openning of the arm. That means from about 12 to 16 inches. I know you have a respirator on but the fumes of the welding juste can't all be extracted if it's to far. Words from a safety sally ;) Love your show, keep on the good work!
This is what it's all about for me. Alec making stuff. It's what brought me a long time ago and it's what will keep me =) I love WIll too but Alec is my anchor lol.
Good job on the mill, you're making machinists feel better already. Ha ha ha. Just a thought: Already in the Bridgeport for drilling, just switch to a boring head and bore the ID to size. Then ID chuck it on the lathe with a small ID fixture and turn the OD... But hey, I saw you tram the head, use an edge finder, center drill, and even parallels! We might turn you into a machinist after all! 😉
I used to coat all my coin rings in Everbrite ProtectaClear to keep them from rusting or oxidizing. It's a clear protective coating that should work on any metals.
At 5:36, it's not sacrilege at all to have an edge finder in a drill chuck. Even if the body of the edge finder isn't held concentrically by the chuck, it will still kick off true to the rotation of the spindle.
Last few hours I also working on Damascus ring, but I used different techniques, firstly I made a small ring by soldering thick copper wire then I coil this with guitar string (core-nickel winding-brass), to uniform the structure all was also soldered with axcess of tin. Tomorrow I gonna grinding this to form a ring and I believe that tin by heating will defuse to copper creating bronze so there will be layers of tin, bronze, brass, nickel and copper
It would be awesome to see you attempt to make "true damascus" or "crucible steel" one day. From what i understand crucible steel is quite difficult to make but is known for producing some of the highest quality blades in existence.
You might try some anchor lube cutting lubricant. Its like a greenish blue paste. With harder steels you can work harden the steel useing regular cutting lube. The anchor lube will melt as it is needed. It works well with most all metal and keeps the steel cool. Thats all i use in our machine shop. Dont think youde be dissapointed. You would save drill bits with it also. Hope it helps if you try it.
Hey alec, long time watcher and have always been fascinated in blacksmithing, how would your recommend someone get started smithing when they live in a place without much room for a full workshop (suburb or something around that size) i go hunting so having a hunting knife that I've made has always seem like a neat idea, but i have no clue where or how to start.
Woah, i don't know if someone new is doing the videos but from a cinematic perspective, this has been one of the finest ones in a while! Reminds me of Alec's videos just before leaving the UK. Keep it up!

Would some sort of lacquer help avoid rusting on the ring? Seems simple enough? Also, would love to see you try to do damascus on different types of stainless if that is even possible.
Neat smithing as always. :) Here's a challenge for you though: Every time I've seen you make a damascus billet, it's always been from a stack. How about a canister or even cable damascus? Might be fun. :)
As much as your learning now, would be nice if I could be around in 20 yrs and see how well you can do then, your projects turn out awesome now, granted mistakes here and there, but you don't let them deter you, you always finish with an amazing product. I agree completely with you i thought i was the only one
Oh man, now I can’t unsee it.
Tyler Jones sorry ;)
And in the fire furnace of Alec Steele's workshop ONE ring was created to rule them all.
For the saber, paint the hilt with "slip" before casting to decrease air bubbles.
I've been anxiously waiting for a machining video since you started your new shop. There's an old Bridgeport knock off in the shop I work in.
Glad to see you still do a Fab video on your own!
Seeing the stacks of steel just never gets old!
Keep it up!
I’m a gold smith in the making. I’m learning a lot of stuff. I’m working on being a full time smith and forging/casting whenever I can.
I think "taking a break" from the Sabre build is code for Will has been mentally and emotionally crushed so we're going to help him keep his sanity by doing something fun for a while. Keep up the awesome content and chin up Will when you guys get that guard figured out it's gonna look amazing.
Alec , I would really love to see you make your own forge . A big bad ass American forge !!!
Loved the idea of a Damascus ring so much i got one as my wedding ring. Mine has 2 yellow gold bands inlayed into it.
Alec, are you planning on hardening the ring? to get the best pattern contrast you need to harden it, as im sure you're aware.
After another 20 yrs practice, you're going to be incredible!!!
This is what I want when I get engaged! Damascus ring ! YES PLEASE ! so cool!
The Sabre stuff has been neat to watch but THIS, this is the content I subscribed for
