Alec Steele Blacksmith 2018
Hey guys, sadly I had to cancel the auction - you can read more about why here:
**Auction Cancelled** I found out from commenters on Instagram that a certain proportion of people can get reactions from the nickel content of one of the steels used after prolonged contact between the fingers either side of the ring. Naturally this poses a liability concern if I sell it. Who knows, maybe I’ll turn it into a not-a-ring and sell it then! I’m sorry to let down those of you bidding and excited to win the ring. Nevertheless it was a hugely fun project that I got to practice and learn a lot on!
(I’m now itching to see the comments this prompts under the Mokume Gane [copper and nickel] Pendant video I just finished recording and will soon publish 😂)
Mokume Gane...? So you still have that billet you made a while ago?
Since the inside is silver shouldn't that prevent people from having a reaction?
EDIT: Ok people can stop pointing out that the outside touches your other fingers, two dozen versions of the same point is enough.
this is soo sad
Some people are allergic to silver, too. It's hard to account for everybody's individual problems.
@@fakjbf3129 It touches the other fingers though.
BTW, why is there no maker mark on this ring? Would be more valuable if there was. IMO.
Alex u should try forging a frying pan could be a fun project
Josh Findley bump
Dude. A freaking damascus frying pan. Yes please.
pretty sure its Alec
cast iron would be a new material to work
He can make a frying pan for his wife Will to cook him supper.
am I the only one who loves the look of it without the gem??
yeah i definitely thought it looked better before.
the gem looks out of place
yep ... thought the same
The gem looks kinda like a wart
I don't like that it is proud of the ring. If the stone was flush I think it would look alright.
Hilarious that you understand metallurgy but didn't realize the affects heat has on plastic 😂 nice ring though 😁
Alec ! Take it easy with the stone setting ! I know it's fun but there's alot of things that shouldn't have gems on them ! And this gorgeous ring is one of them .:)
I agree, but he probably needs to justify getting all the ring setting stuff to himself, so by putting gems in everything in his mind it is worth it
I was thinking the same.
i set diamonds and sundry into steels and other alloys all the time. well done mate and keep at it. don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I'm sorry, I did laugh about that cup melting when you poured the boiling water in it. I mean... I think very highly of you, Alec, but sometimes I wonder about your sense of self-preservation... as in I wonder if yours is working! You're a madman!
He was just showing off the merch
Are you a gay?
@@NoobNoobNews sometimes? I really wonder about his lack of common sense sometimes.
@@Billthebott, are you seriously trying to get a date, in a youtube comment section?
@no no Yeah, trying to catch red hot metal is "fine". Can't remember what video that was...
hey brother, suggestion. take some borax mix it in alcohol and coat your gold or silver with the mixture and burn off the alcohol to protect from oxides on your metal. and this will aide in soldering silver and gold.
always pickle your silver or gold using a light hcl to clear away oxides after soldering.
with the high nickle content of your Damascus you would do well to plate the underside of the ring with nickle, then you could solder the silver to the ring and protect from capillary action of water getting in under the steel
using your borax/alcohol to protect the silver ANNEAL the silver before soldering to the ring and forming, the silver will work harden over time
8 hour knife challenge WILL vs STEELE !!!
You could call the challange "Will of Steele"
stelter vs. steele lol
How about a partial damascus frame for your glasses?
Way too heavy haha
Probably but i thought about damascus temples (had to look that up) which are connected to a light wooden frame. That way, even if the bars get a little heavier, it is still balanced. Or just an even thinner stripe of damascus to cover the temples. @@derxer614
If we're talking weight problems then maybe a damascus monocle?
So fancy! I love the stone color. It reminds me of blue dykum. I really can't believe you brought the nail polish all the way from the UK. At least you aren't wasting a half used bottle 😆.
It's a nice piece of work and I loved seeing the problem solving, but that setting doesn't really work in this application for me. You're not seeing the color of the gem at all because virtually no light gets to it. It may as well be a piece of jet or onyx.
The silver banding looks the tits, though.
12:42 : "it might just be crazy enough to work", I love this sentence ! And also you made a great job with this ring, bravo!!
Alex try chucking up the ring in your lathe and use a round rod to roll the silver edge onto the band.
I really like this format, where you show every little step and narrate all the way through. very informative and engaging.
It relaxes me when you use metric.
Born and raised on Freedom units, and metric just makes more sense to me.
12" to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, 1760 yards to a mile -VS- 10mm to a cm, 100cm to a meter, 1000 meters to a kilometer.
That’s cool Melissa. You should probably chill out.
@@melissahill7930 how does war and politics affect the speed and ease of use of measuring systems? These are videos for an international audience, using internationally recognized measuring systems makes sense to me.
Most people who watch this video use one system of totally arbitrary, made-up measurements, and the rest use a different set of totally arbitrary, made-up measurements *that are based off of the other set anyway*.
@@melissahill7930 maybe you should keep your thoughts in your head, just like your bad conversions. 1" is approximately 25.4mm, not 39.4mm (did you learn your conversions from those that made up the stupid "common core" mathematics?) Thanks for your service, but you make the rest of us Americans look/sound dumb. I'm all about freedom, guns, bacon, bald eagles, and quarter miles, but some things need standardizing, and outdated "standard" system doesn't make sense for anything precision based
@@melissahill7930 I see that I have recieved a "like" for my comment, and while I had to edit my comment for a missed word, you have edited yours that was 3 months older than mine in order to include my correction of your bad conversion without even acknowledging me.....
I enjoy your big projects, but I really enjoy these interlude projects. The Blacksmith Challenge with Will is fun too.
Great video, Alec. I love you working on some more damascus
oh wow, nice spot for the gemstone, and the coffee etch, really nice. Rivet idea is just so kewl, it gives the whole thing a very industrial look. Nicely done.
This is incredible. Steele has evolved. That’s some impressive solution
You were on the right track! Burnish one side to almost the right roll, then do the ball trick. Beautiful! And that coffee... brilliant!
The best thing about these small projects is we know you are working on something amazing to show us later!
Hmm. You choice of words intrigues me. The wearer?
Do I sense an auction or giveaway coming up?
Damn. Need to start watching until the end before commenting!
Yo alec I only started watching your videos 2 weeks ago and I love the look of blacksmithing/blade smithing and it’s really inspired me to want to become a blacksmith/blade smith as it is such a unique and creative craft. I would love to see a video of you making a Damascus gut knife.
8:05, nice save, will😂 I don’t think anyone noticed!
i like the ring n these small projects and how you can see Will working away on something in the background, prob making another wax mold for the saber
Have you considered laquering the ring. This would eliminate oxidisation issues.
It will also prevent allergic reaction, some people may get from the nickel
Not if you use automotive laquer
Alec, great vid! When you got into the gem-setting problem solving, really reminded me of the older videos with the "Need a tool make a tool" fixes :D 😊👍
Released this one a little early.... Awesome to see you getting out the content... Hope all is well with you & Will... take it easy...
I seriously can not wait until you're first jewel hilted ceremonial dagger. All these new skills you two are learning will coalesce into a truly epic build.
You should do a charity auction for a few of these, winners to give their sizes and you make a video of making the rings.
Beautiful ring Alec. I actually like the stone set into it. As much as people seem to think it was a bad idea I love it. Enjoying you branching out in your metalworking and expanding your skill set. As always have a beautiful day guys.
Alec, whats going on with the cavalry saber? I'm excited to see how the recast in the silicon mold goes.
I'm curious if the mold was garbage so will has to make a new one.
According to the facebook page they are waiting for supplies to arrive before they can continue.
Perhaps they purchased a larger commercial vacuum chamber and are waiting for it?
Probably waiting on more investment they used all of it on the last cast
Finally we have the old Alec Steele back. Enjoyed it very much.
in my opinion, the gem was to much, the Damascus look lush on its own, still amazing tho just not my cup of tea this one :)
is this how people feel about gold jewelry and diamonds? I get it. Before i just thought " ooooohhh big deal, its just shiny metals and sparkly rocks". Absolutely Stunning Alec!
Great work. Perhaps it’s the purist in me, but I liked the ring before the stone was set in it. That being said, thanks for taking us along on your journey as you learn. I really enjoy watching you progress.
Hey Alec been following your videos since 1m layer katana, and still love your content. i would love to see you make a medieval knights armor set. keep up the good work.
Hi Alec I absolutely love your content. Keep up the great work!
Pablo is a great jewellery maker and designer, I love his work. Nice job Alec 👍
I can't believe you're not like everyone else and insert 30 ads in one video.
All his videos are sponsored. No need for extra ad revenue.
jeremy jensen it’s really quite admirable. Although he has sponsors, most people with sponsors still do midrolls
He must be doing alright. No extra ads doesn't push his Patreon, though I am not sure he even has content on it. Doesn't really sell much of what he makes. Just shirts and sponsors.
@Lodogg 3323 that one ace that he goes to could survive on what he buys alone
Nope, just before you see a second of the video..
This why I love this channel. Push yourself beyond your comfort zone and learn. Powerful and inspiring. Hooyah Proud to Serve!
Since you're in the US, you should probably know know that we don't pronounce the L in solder here. It's sod-er, because we like to be difficult.
Not difficult. We just have a history of jerking around the english. Lol
But if he keeps his english accent he'll get more girls.
I know lots of plumbers that say solder with the l on the west coast
Of course, to a Brit, pronouncing it "sodder" has a whole other meaning!
"Origins" isn't pronounced "oranges" in ANY country, yet some retards do it anyhow. Let the man pronounce words any way he wants.
I love your creative approach to problem solving. Great video, great result.
Is the silver liner needed? Wouldn't the oils and constant contact of your finger keep the inside of the ring from rusting?
Nope. I've made rings out of metal pump shafts and they rust right away. The only ring I wear now, other than my wedding band is a stainless steel ring I made about 12 years ago.
@@mcclurej8818 was that a ring you wore everyday?
Unfortunately human sweat is acidic and contains salts. Both of which will actually accelerate the oxidizing of the steel. The one exception is stainless due to the other metals in the alloy. That's why copper and broze jewelry will tarnish and turn your skin green.
I like how fast you talk. I run most videos at 1.25 or 1.5, but you keep a nice quick pace.
Keeps my short attention span happy.
The guy who said to do a frying pan is a genius! Or a cast iron skillet!!!!
Awesome work! You’re channel is so much better since the move. No bias meant. Welcome to ‘Murica! Glad to see you embrace our country. 👍
It's 23:41 in UK I've got college tomorrow I should sleep.... Nah this is more important
Same here lol
Same haha
People who have their heads screwed on right!

Same 😂😂😂
So I came to your chan randomly when I saw your second video on making a better damascus steel chef knife. I am no hooked. You are a metal surgeon! Keep it up!
Super Happy that i can sit down for dinner everyday and enjoy your videos man, stellar work!
Can you make copper brass damascus ring. I think that would look pretty cool 😊
The Damascus ring was majestic but the gem was a mistake
I disagree
Makes it look like a button with the way it protrudes
It was to thick for the gem make it little slimmer and it qould have been great
Don't forget he's 20 years old. Moved from England to the US , set this shop up. Respect!
Alec:
"sol-der"
Me, an intellectual:
"Saw-der"
Alec, I love your videos and your energy in them! Forgive me for memeing. Is "sol-der" the common pronunciation in the Uk?
KickeroTheHero As far as I know, the USA is the only place in the world that doesn’t pronounce it sol-der. For some reason you guys forget there’s an L in the word.
@@alexnorton We learned how to ignore the actual spelling of a word from England. ;)
@@EverettWilson Don't you mean Engand? xD
This is by far the best video on this channel. Succinct. Technician. And with a wonderful final work.
Hey man I’ve been watching you for a long time I love what you do and you have inspired me to blacksmithing and that that your here in the US you should do another Damascus American flag Buckle that would be awesome
Alec, you have an amazing level of skill. How about making a hollow Damascus steel square box. Perfectly square, perfectly smooth at the corners.
an upload that's not at 10pm? nice!
Yeah you realized he moved like 8 hours in time zones so it might have messed up your usual upload times from him
you right fr fr
Have you considered using a fixative spray on your piece after you finish it so it doesnt tarnish or rust? Its something that we used in my fine metals class (basically artsy metal jewellery) so that we could handle our pieces without ruining the clean finish we had finally gotten.
Your description still says "Alec Steele Blacksmith 2018". Time to update it to 2019.
Alec, something you might try for bending that silver band is a small rotary hammer used by Jewelers. It's a simple shaft with a head that is off center like a crankshaft in a car. I think that Foredom makes one but it would be easy enough to make. Great work in the ring too bad about the liability issue.
Really nice Damascus Ring!!! :D
I'd love to see you try to make a Tension ring.
Especially one of the helix-styled ones.
I think that style would show off all the beauty of the Damascus without the clash of a gem setting. Assuming its possible to make with Damascus.
You are clearly well liked.

@@kezzatube45 That's not what's going on. When a video blows up on UA-cam they freeze the visible view count while they verify that the views are legitimate. The like count is not subject to the freeze, and indicates the video's true reach.
@@kezzatube45 I apologize if you were bored by my reply. As a software developer, I find these sorts of quirks interesting, and was merely sharing information I enjoyed learning.
I do tend to stop talking when the person I'm in front of obviously knows already or doesn't care at all. You're absolutely right that I'm a friendless goblin that doesn't get invited places, but I'm hoping to make up for that with hard work.
@@kezzatube45 It's worth noting that the view count is still live on videos with low views. It's only when lots of views are coming in that UA-cam performs validation in order to discourage exploitation.
GV. To get a measurement of the inside of a tube, roll up a thin piece of paper that is a little larger than the inside. Stick the paper in and let it expand. Mark where the edge overlays the bottom part. Remove the paper and unroll it. The inside circumference is from the edge of the paper to the mark.
Nice, but sure wish you would get back to the cavalry sabre
He’s waiting for some equipment for casting the guard to arrive before he can continue
Hoping this reaches you! I commented on Instagram as well but would love to see a damascus straight edge razor with a bengal striped wood handle!! Buy that in a heart beat and would last waaaay longer! Love the videos! Keep it up!!
Hmm, wouldn’t it be possible to silver plate the finished ring then buff it off the outside?
Silver plate is too thin. It would rub off in a fairly short time.
Make some armor. That should be out of your comfort zone and a nice thing to learn. A damascus spangenhelm would be nice.
Well looks like Im not Going to Sleep yet
Thin out some brownells baking lacquer and dip your etched Damascus, then buff the l6 that’s higher because it didn’t etch, works great.
Leroy jenkins
That tenon setting was a brilliant idea! That really showcased your problem solving skills. Awesome ring!
What happened to the Cavalry Sword?
@bacon banana think they bent it
Jon Willis - looks like they needed to restart the wax hilt to me.
@bacon banana think Alec built a very large vacuum chamber and will got trapped inside.
But all is not lost. I'd quite like to see if you can forge demascus and Will together
bacon banana - ah, but they didn’t actually test the mold though before they melted the wax original did they? Me thinks the first casting didn’t work and the mold was not really good enough to try again. I bet Will’s Project Screwdriver is really an excuse to sit at the bench and remake the wax hilt.
Alec has stated on Instagram that the sword is on hold until some new equipment comes in for them to finish casting the guard and complete the sort
One of the prettiest Works of art I have seen truly beautiful!
What’s going on with the Calvary sword!??!???
I believe he said they were waiting on some tools to come in the finish it up
I'm going to try that coffee trick on my next Damascus knife. Neato!
I love your work, but I have to say:
I really dont like the way you set your stones.
They protrude way too much and destroy the organic look of your piece.
Setting them in the material flush with the surface would make it look way better.
Maybe there is a way to set stones in that way?
Because the protruding setting of the stone destroys pretty much every work you´ve done so far with it, in my honest opinion.
I hope this gets across as constructive cirtisism.
Keep on rocking!
He pretty clearly stated that he didnt plan that far ahead and ground it too thin to do that.
@@TheClearwall And I clearly said that I dont only mean that for this ring, I mean it in general.
Since alec started setting stones he always does it the same way which always, in MY opinion, destroys the overall look of the piece or at least distorts it.
It just does not look clean, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
And there are always multiple ways of doing things, thats all Im saying.
If he gets more expirience and trys out more ways to set stones, he will improve.
That Coffee Etch is AWESOME!!!
Your poor hands look like they're taken quite a beating this past week or two lol
Alec, you may want to look into a bezel setting tool. They are cheap and you could have used one to set the silver inside your ring easily. You would probably not have any problems making one. All gemstones that are cut "en cabochon", or round top, are bezel set.
Knows the melting points of various metals but not basic plastic cups...
I mean, to be fair when was the last time he forged plastic
Always impressed when you explain your mistakes and the cures for them. You could just leave all that out and look like a master but you’re better than that! It’s always about the learning and the journey with you, it’s inspiring! Awesome work tho Alec 🤙🏻
Alec gets an American girlfriend, starts making rings. Do the math.
His girlfriend is Will
18.7 mm in US/Canada size is an 8½. Either a woman with very large fingers, or a guy with slender fingers. 7:10, fabulous? Will likes the coffee etch. Hey... it's none of my business but the math seems to be indicating something else.
Bingo!
@@jsfarrier9732 It's a "friendship" ring to go with their bracelets.
@@jsfarrier9732 No! Will's too pretty for Alex.....
this is why i love this channel you are always learning new thing and sometuimes failing at it but you show that i respect that
Will isn't forging in this video cause it would be awkward to help his husband with his own ring. Hence the sentimental coffee etch and blue gem. How else do yall think Alec got his green card to come to Montana.
I've actually got the exact same nail polish to repair a scratch on the stanchions of my downhill bikes forks. Good to know I got the right stuff. 😂
did not like it with gem, plain was better :S
If you'd like to do more rings in the future with the rolled silver over a center piece. Get a small set of dapping punches. Harbor Freight carries a set that would work. But Rio sells much nicer ones.
Captions!! No CC's on this vid, I need them. Some of your viewers do not hear like everyone else...Thanks! Keep doing what you do! Its great!
You can do a clear coat paint(automotive paint) on the steel to prevent rust and give it a little more shine.
Awesome ring! Would appreciate a little more explanation on maintaining the finish. What kind of polish/ cleaning would it take to wear it daily?
I’ve been watching your videos for a total of three workshops now! I love your videos man keep at it!
Amount of workshops should just be the default time measurement
Alec Alec Alec you don’t have to drop a gem in every project now, it looked so clean without it
This is cool. Also that silver rivet prevents silver inlay from rotate.
If you nail polished the inside of the ring why was it etched?
Another though for you, silver melts around 960°c where steel is around 1300°c. Couldnt you use heat to soften the silver making it easier to bend over. In addition couldn’t you make your under cuts and whatnot for the gem stone and solider the pin into place?
not the biggest fan of the gem sticking out of the ring like that but everything else looks amazing and its all just practice for future projects so keep it up man, always loving the videos

Alec Vs. Will kind of challenge. so each one of you guys can have their own knife.
Great ideas with the coffee! I've done this accidentally so many times spilling coffee on my steel top weld tables and they do black quite a bit
So cool to see this! This is exactly how I made my wedding ring!. Although I used stainless steel as the liner and 14K Yellow Gold cast into a Celtic knot shape. Plus, I didn't have the right hardy tool so to bend out the liner I had to use my Truck Trailer hitch and a ballpeen. hahaha
