Yes, you are absolutely correct. I may not have highlighted it, but where I have it positioned in my case I have two Silverstone AP-121 fans blowing cold air directly on it. It keeps the card cool by a good 5- 10 degrees . I also have a probe on it so I can monitor the heat using my Koolance TMS-205 HW/SW monitoring and control software. The UV Blue fan blades match but youy can not really see them.

Yes using the LSI mega raid software , you can create multiple logical arrays. Also you can but splitter cables so can configure more that 8 drives of this controller..

  • @Ronsanut
    @Ronsanut  12 років тому

Yes there are cables that split them further. Search on LSI Raid Splitter Cables. They do make them .

Rosanut is correct, the Maximum you can split from each of those sas connector is 4 sata/sas. The RAID expanders will not increase your bandwidth though, but the card can essentially manage 128 SAS/SATA drives.

thanks a lot for the quick answer ,, i installed my new LSI 9271 i4 on my new build ,, and everything is running good , maybe i will make a video and a speed test for the raid controller .. once again thanks a nd best regards.

I know. But it is so cool, and I worked my ass off to make the G, why not spend it on something we can appreciate. This whole system has become my dream system. But that is what us enthusiasts do... :-)

Yes, particularly, I would not enable writeback mode w/o using this BBU07 been using it since last summer. You should also purchase the CacheCade Software Key if you are using it with SSDs.

It provides for raid integrity protection in the case of an AC power failure but retaining the data in the cache when the power went out. Also supposedly improves performance a bit. If this was business and had heavy I/O use, it is a must. For my use though I could eaisly rebuild the raid if it went down, I am lazy and would prefer the protection and not have to rebuild it. Thanks for watching.

My led's all stay on. None of them flash. They all also have the same firmware. I did get the Fast Path key. Checkout the link in the video to the benchmark video where I show the impact of the fast Path key. I think it does help, but for what I use my system for it is overkill. But as an enthusiast, I had to have it. Thanks for watching.

With the LSI Controllers you can use either the WeBios Or the Software through the OS./ But I think to set it up initially you have to use the WeBios. Also not e to use the Software you must have the User Account Control Settings turned off to manage the controller. You can reset the UAC after you make adjustments.

I'd like to make one recommendation. If possible, try to get a cooling solution for your 9260-8i. As you may know, this card is ridiculously hot. You could, if there's room, place a vantech spectrum pci van card under it so that it blows directly onto it.
I am using one myself. It would even work better for you since it will go along with the blue inside the beast of a machine that you have.
    Cheers!

I did wind up purchasing the LSI LSI00247 MegaRAID FastPath Software key. If you watch my Benchmarks video you will see the performance gain I had using this key. Is the CacheCade SW a separate purchase ?

I think it uses a breakout cable to connect.

You should get the software from LSI the MegaRaid "fastpath". It's like $120, but worth it for ssd's.

Lol... I meant to say FastPath, my bad.
    I also did a benchmark on my 8-SSD RAID5.
    Thanks!
P.S.: I think are ppl like you and I are the crazy bunch to spend a G on one card.

I also have 4 ocz vertex 3 120gb on a raid 0 in the same icy expander. I'm running a lsi 9260-4i and I love the performance. Do all your led's flash on your expander or only few? My newest vertexs flash while my two older ones don't. Kinda strange, both have the same firmware. Also did you get the fast path key, and do you think it would help at all? Thanks for the great videos

I believe this is the solution. You need to get a
    Intel® RAID Expander Card RES2SV240
Low profile SAS/SATA 24 port expander board.

Firstly thanks for the informative video it was very helpfull. I have noticed that on server 2012 you are unable to enable the write cache option without the BBU installed, however when I connected my APC smart ups this option could be enabled in device manager. My question is what is the difference between the BBU and having a UPS. I assume that there must be boost circuitry on the BBU to generate the two voltage rails thus allowing the card to complete writing the cache to the disks. An explanation of the two different methods, pro's and con's would be much appreciated. Many thanks. :) P.S. It's nice to see proper ESD precautions being taken. In addition to a strap and matt I made up a red IEC cable that just has the earth connected via a 1 megohm resistor that I plug into the wall and the psu. I like having the case grounded for an extra layer of protection personally. Stuart.

Hey, thanks for the answer, much like paintballer70 I searched for ages to find those cables and couldnt. But I did find a similar solution to what you suggest, I think I found Chenbro makes some (Chenbro Low Profile 28-port SAS Expander Card) and intel do a few different types. Thats the only solution I could find for this issue.

I was wondering if you know the answer to this. The specs of this card say it can handle upto 128 SAS/SATA drives. Well the cables available only split to 8 SAS/SATA and I dont think there are cables available to split them further so how are you suppose to connect more drives? Or have I completely misunderstood the specs of this card?

quick question, I saw the intel raid expander, it has 6 ports, i'm assuming you need to connect the LSI RAID card to the expander somehow. Do you know how the intel card can connect with this raid card?

hi.. question ,, is the driver and the WebBIOS configuration utility enough for controller to get it work properly or must use a software too?
because i bought a raid card 9271 i4 and i want to know more about it.
