Pat Puckett shoes his own horses at my grandparent’s age, rides stuff I’d be scared to….after a hospital experience a while back…I want to be Pat when I grow up! 💛 He’s the GOAT!
Thanks for the update. I have been wondering how close those fires were and if they are traveling in your direction. Heat wave here in Nova Scotia too. Horses are sweating standing still.
Greetings from the Cordillera Blanca region of Peru. I have enjoyed your channel for some time now. Thank you and your wife for your videos and your lessons. I have a question for you that you will most likely laugh at. Please be kind. You most likely know about the big push take the horse barefoot and one who uses steel horseshoes is "abusing " the horse. Well, I put shoes on my horse. One reason is that the terrain I have available to ride on is very rough and rocky. The other reason has to do with my question. Do you use hoof boots on your horses? What can you say good or bad about using hoof boots. I am contemplating purchasing them but I am not sold on the idea. I trim and shoe my own horses as I hear that you do the same. Maybe you don't ride in rough terrain and it is not an issue for you. Either way , what would be your opinion? By the way I ride a Peruvian Paso ( Gaited) horse. I have been called a "Gringo" from the day I entered this country and still to this day after 20 years I am the Gringo although my friends call me by my name I was given at birth. Thank you. May God bless you both!
We use steel horse shoes with 8 nails per shoe. We have ridden horses in hoof boots in the past when riding for people who didn't want their horses shod. We went through about one pair per week. We also found that the hoof boots made the horses less handy with their front feet. Steel shoes work just fine and are not abusive. I will concede that some horses have thin, shelly hoof walls. In that case, some of our friends have gone to glue on shoes but they are prohibitively expensive and unnecessary for horses with good hoof walls. One more thing...Pat shoes our horses every 10-12 weeks. The result of waiting that long is that when he pulls the old shoes and trims the hoof, he has a brand new hoof with no nail holes in it because the hoof has grown out sufficiently. We have seen problems occur when people shoe their horses too often. The result of shoeing every 6 weeks, for example, is there will be a line of old nail holes across the wall of the hoof that weakens the hoof wall. If this happens to you, wait longer between shoeings.
When is your horse too old to ride? My two are 25 and 26. I would like to ride them five miles a day. I just retired and have lots of time now. I bought them when they were 1 and 2. I've done everything ass-backward but did it myself.
It all depends on the individual horses and the country that you want to ride in. I'm assuming you'll alternate so they have some time off in between rides. If they are sound and in good weight, riding regularly will be good for them.
No. He never bucked. He was a dangerous combination of aggression, anxiety, and fear. Every day was a brand new day so he never made progress and was beginning to favor aggression as a means of interacting with humans. Not all horses are salvageable.
@@PatnDebPuckett thanks, Pat. I wonder if some rare horses are on an equine autism spectrum. Good to know his owner is just letting him be himself at pasture.
Don't worry about me judging you for the halter while riding. I don't believe in letting horses go home by themselves, although a few have tried. I save my rawhide pencil bosal and horsehair get down for "dressy occasions" and reliable horses. Anyone who deride you for riding like a sheep herder can sleep outside while you stay warm in the Sheepwagon....
I always ride with a halter unless showing. Good to see I'm not the only one. I want to be able to lead my horses without using the reins, reprimand them instantly when needed without jerking on the reins, tie them when needed, hand them off to someone to hold, put the lead rope in my right butt pocket so I have hands free on the ground while tacking up and know my horses head will be there when I get back when tied. The lead rope can also serve as a quick night latch. Now can someone tell me the negatives of riding with a rope halter?? Oh that's right they think it's ugly.

Looks like he was enjoying himself. Glad you got shoes on. Mules can be even longer to outlast.
Its not how we start the day that matters but how we finish
You are Asome
Good to see the progress on Homer. What brand of hat is Pat wearing?
That is some very smooth video you have shot while traveling. What camera were you using?
What kind of horse is spotted fever? At one point in this video, it looked like he was doing a running walk or some four beat gait. He's coming along.
Thanks good ppl, k

So sad that "Spotted Fever" couldn't make it. Things looked so hopeful during this ride. What happened? Did he just blow up?
No. He never bucked. He was a dangerous combination of aggression, anxiety, and fear. Every day was a brand new day so he never made progress and was beginning to favor aggression as a means of interacting with humans. Not all horses are salvageable.

Deb, do you have artist for music on this ride?
Waiting for Light-EP by Ian Kelosky, the song title is Shape You're In. I found it on Apple Music.
Love Deb's song choices! I Shazam them every time I hear something new.
People like to make fun of riding with a haulter. Well i wonder how many horses they started and finished.

Rapture is soon hallelujah. I can't wait to get my heavenly white horse 😍
