My whole garden is in containers. Tomatoes, peppers. Cucumbers. Bush beans. Pole beans. Pumpkin. Watermelon. Beets. turnips and herbs.
I was not aware of watermelons can be grown in a pot but I have seen people grow watermelons in bags of potting soil.
Me too!🌷🥕🥦🍆🥬🌶️🍅🍅
me too! I love my container garden!
Quick question: Have you companion planted your tomatoes and your carrots before and did they play nice?
I'm in Michigan too. I'm disabled and yes I adore Nantes for containers but I wanted to grow longer carrots and more of them this year so I designed a handicapped friendly container which my husband built. It's a big box on legs. The front is hinged so come harvest I can just unlatch it and the dirt will fall out onto a tarp. Can just grab the carrots instead of trying to bend over and dig them or having to lift a heavy container. To me, just a small container is heavy lol. I did the same for potatoes. It's my first year trying this so we will see how they do. If it works, I'll make a video next year on handicapped gardening. Cross your fingers for me.
I hope everything works out well. Growing carrots is fun and quite easy even in the hardest places to grow crops like deserts.
Wondering how this worked out for you?? Could you give us an update?
Also disabled, also got a man with a screwdriver :) would you mind giving us feedback how it worked? A link is good too :)
Wow! What a great idea! What if you put a wheelbarrow in front of the box, then you won't have to bend down so low and the soil will be in the wheelbarrow instead of down on the tarp on the ground!
Best of luck!
My husband tried growing carrots in a pot one year for his rabbit, no idea what he did but after waiting all summer for them to grow the tops looked beautiful and when he pulled them up and they were the teeny weenie itty bitty carrots ive ever seen lol was hilarious! but the rabbit sure did enjoy those tops!
Laced, Clover blossoms are every rabbit's favorite food. I grow them along the 200' of alley surrounding my home. When they are in bloom the rabbits leave everything else alone!
Too much nitrogen
You can eat the tops!
Phenius Cage how can I know when there’s too much nitrogen?
@@LuizMartins1989 You will get all leaves and no fruit. Go with something like a 2-4-4 will help, or get Trifecta like he sells/uses.
I’m container gardening on my deck this year. 1st time in a while. Trying garlic, carrots, lettuce, snap peas and cucumbers in containers first time. Also watermelons and cantaloupe, among other veggies like pepper, tomatoes and herbs. This video is very helpful.
"No one is going to say 'this tastes like a bent carrot'" hehe that was awesome and true :-)
I grew larger carrots in my large black feed trough raised bed, and they were awesome. I grew flowers and other veggies, too. I may have to try this for those smaller carrots now.
I'm intimidated by growing carrots, yet I bought a packet this year. With this video, I think I'm gonna do it.
I love going back to older videos and learning more watching a second time. Thor's time.
I'm growing carrots in an 18 gallon tote.. Last year I grew them in a 3 gallon pot and they turned out great.. They were the short n sweets.. This year I'm growing half short and sweet and half Danvers 126.. They have been in since March..
Luke, you are so funny! You help me remember that perfection doesn’t always happen and some times it isn’t even necessary! God bless you and yours!
thank you so much for this. my Fiancé and I have moved up to the "Country" of California near Humboldt county. We are embracing the country life from the San Francisco Bay Area, we actually have a little spot to use pots. We have a variety germinating as we speak on April 16th. beautiful weather looking like 50 + nights to 60-65+ days perfect timing. we've been germinating indoors early and have wonderful growth. this is our first go around so this is definitely touch and go. I am looking at everyone's videos for the different veggies and fruits we have going. Tomatoes, such as beef steak, yellow pear, and cherry, Squash, Bell Pepper, Scarlet Carrots, Herbs, and a bunch of hot peppers, as well as chives, basil, cilantro. this is the first year to see if I can go pots and stuff can grow before I put in the back breaking work for raised beds on our hill. I need this to work and I go to school for Nursing too. This is my extra class for sure. I've learned so much and appreciate what you've shown me my man. we'll see how this turns out I guess
😄 this is a nice video. I especially love the ending. The flavor and nutrients are just the same whether the carrot is straight or bent. People focus on the craziest things.
You have inspired me to grow carrots in pots, I already have the seeds so I will start them today which is 8-4-22 and I will let you know how they do in 65 days!
Great advise about not buying rootcrop seedlings. I worked in a garden centre and was amazed at how many people bought them despite telling them it was easier to grow from seed.
Yes, I am trying carrots in a pot this year first time ever. I started life on a farm, and Dad & Mom had wonderful produce they grew canned and froze everything for their family of 7. Now I'm 66 and live in a seniors condo section, and I'm learning how to do everything in pots and containers. Nothing tastes as good as home grown food, so I'm looking forward to what we can accomplish. I like listening to your podcasts, they are concise and informative, as well as having your own personal experience and ideas. Thanks a lot, and keep growing!
I'm starting out, and I love going from seeds. It's more of an accomplishment to say wow... I grew that! Instead of going from a plant where you only grew it half way. :/ And you get to watch it grow!
I agree!
Joey Alteri
Joey Alteri I agree to but it's just way hard to do it all the time
I love doing both because the seeds I growing I can still have color and a wonder smelling yard :) and bend down pinch my thyme and take in the lemon smell ;)
Thanks, good video. I've been growing in containers for years, my one suggestion is to put your containers in a tray that holds water. It will collect the excess water and the plant can draw it back when needed. It also solves another problem that I have, the tree roots are so aggressive around here that they will invade pots that are sitting on the ground.
I started by replanting a carrot top from a carrot that I ate. It went to seed, and now I have carrots everywhere.
We have a ton of gophers in California and don’t have the best soil so I am super excited to do some more container gardening. I had great success growing new potatoes in 2 potatoes bags this last year and am going to try more potatoes, carrots, cucumbers and lettuce next.
Thanks Luke, Now I know where to plant my seeds of carrots. Didn't think of a container. I have radishes and leaf lettuces in containers, now I will have carrots also. You were out of Trifecta fertilizer last week, will try again today., Love your vldeos. Thanks so much. Sharon, a 78 year old organic gardener.
I love it--a bent carrot is going to taste like a carrot❤️
Love to listen to you. You are understandable and thorough. I've learned alot.
Getting ready to show my seeds in a 5 gallon grow bag. Planting Burpee Short and Sweet. Also gonna try some multi color carrots.
How do you know when to harvest. A lot of your videos dont explain that part. Thank you! I've learned so much
Uncover the top of a carrot and check the size.
Wrap black plastic pots in super cheap (yet attractive) burlap tied with a decorative jute bow - adorable and it will keep the soil a bit cooler.
I'm a cheapskate, I spraypaint the outside of my pots white to keep the heat down in the soil.
I certainly enjoy your videos. Thank you for taking the time to start so much in advance of the taping.
If you're growing in pots due to lack of garden space, use square pots rather than round ones in order to get the maximum growing area.
I grew carrots in clay soil. They came up well. At harvest they didn't look that great and were difficult to clean. But after cutting them into carrot sticks they tasted fantastic and kept quite a while in the fridge, the best tasting carrots I ever had.
Great tips Luke ! Thanks for sharing your knowledge !
All of my veggies are in containers. I planted carrots last week, so this video was timed perfectly for me. Thank you!
Thank you for this great information! im going to give carrots another shot!
Always enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Sooo excited to grow carrots now! Thank you for the great instruction! ❤️
Can always count on your growing guides!
thumbs up for all the prepping you did , to make these videos. thank you
This inspired me to grow carrots!
Thank you! I had been debating planting my carrots in my raised bed or a container. Watching this video helped me to make the decision.
I love huge carrots, it looks like he's got one. 🥕
Just recently found your channel..... I've gotten so much out of your videos! Due to your lessons I'm growing potatoes, sweet potatoes, and now carrots in containers for the first time this year! Thanks so much!!!
I know you'll probably never see this since this is old video, but I've been happily binging your channel today. My father says he's too old to garden so I'm trying to study up so I can share with him now! Thanks!
Doing this today!!! Thanks Luke-Kristy in Missouri 😀
Love the video! Makes growing carrots a very plausible option for this fledgling gardener. Currently I’m growing red potatoes, poblano peppers, tomatoes, basil, collards and sweet potato slips all in dirt. I have several things started hydroponically and hopefully there will be a flourishing harvest there too. Hadn’t thought of carrots in a container before but will definitely give it a go. ThanX again for the instructional video. Cheers
Thank you for an informative UA-cam video. I decided to try growing carrots in containers. My container is about 20” wide and many of the carrot seeds got sprouted. They took about 12 days to sprout here in Sunnyvale, CA. Really excited and can’t wait to see a good harvest. Will try to sow seeds to germinate in my raised bed too, just to compare which way carrots grow better. It is Nov 2021.
My garden this year is all grow bags so I appreciate the advice. Thx🥕🍅
Starting my carrots in a few weeks. My pot is bigger I'm going to try to grow 12. I was thinking about starting them in the house. Now I'll just cross my fingers and start in the pot outside. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for this. Like you said, no need to be scared!
I am planting little finger carrots for the first time and in a container today. I actually measured 2" from each hole and I have 14 spaces in my container. If they are a successful I will plant them in my 2022 garden.
Thank you for sharing your experience with me. Have a great weekend!!😊🥕🥕
im planting carrots right now and im curious how it went!! any tips or things you learned? i hope theyre going well!
I have tons of those containers this is perfect thank you
Thanks for making this so simple! Going to try carrots in containers for the first time this fall in Texas and I’m so much less intimidated now!!!
Rly informative, tyfs. God bless
Thank you for this amazing video. I will definitely be growing carrots in containers this year. 🥕
Thanks, will have to try them.
This was a great video I have started lots of seeds but want a few things specifically for the patio and kitchen.
thank you for uploading your video....
Thanks, Luke! This is my second year growing vegetables in containers and my first time growing carrots. I'm a little scared, but your information is going to help me out.
Thank you. I’ll try it.
"Screw aesthetics" just got you a new subscriber.
Love naturally grown carrots, thanks Luke 👍
Going to try it. Love ur videos. Happy gardening.
This is my first year growing carrots, so I'm really excited to try growing them in containers. Next year I'll try to grow them in the ground :3

Thank you for your very useful videos, I am new 6o gardening and learning from UA-cam channels so Thank you. I Just started a UA-cam channel hoping other gardeners can advise as I go
Thanks Luke !
Jus found your channel yesterday. I subbed. I have really enjoyed watching your videos. Very good ideas. We use raised beds for our garden. This year we are doing container and grow bags both. This is giving us more room to do more plants. I appreciate your ideas. Glad to have found your channel............
Never planned to but now I'm going to grow carrots.
I love carrots. I am going to try this. Thanks!
Give it a shot!
I'm going to add coconut coir and water Crystals to my carrots to hold plenty of moisture, great video!
SE Texas is both wonderful and brutal for gardening. We can plant much sooner than most of the US and we have a growing season that often stretched into October IF (and by IF, I mean here comes the brutality) IF the plants survive the super, unrelenting heat of late June through early September. At my new place in a rural area, the only spot I can grow a garden inside of the fence is right over the septic lines. I don't want to grow my food over that, even though it's something like 6 or 7 feet down, so I switched to containers for all food plants. It was a bit expensive getting large containers for the bigger plants and buying SO MUCH potting mix, but it's mostly done now and I am loving it. When the Texas sun tries to burn everything, I'll use my new potted plant dolly and escort all those babies to a shadier spot. We'll see how it goes. I have four kinds of tomato, cucumber, three kinds of bell pepper, jalepeno, banana peppers, cayennes (yeah, we like it spicy), yellow squash, strawberries, basil, sacred basil, parsley, sage, thyme, oregano, rosemary, ginger, onions, chocolate mint, pineapple mint, spearmint, chives. My surgery interrupted my plans, so I'm getting a late start on my first try at something called Baby Round Zucchini and my eggplant. Now I want to try carrots, too! QUESTION: I miss having green beans. Is it possible to grow them in a large container?? Thanks for this series!
We grew carrots and lettuce 🥕
Nice job again.
I think I will try them in containers thanks. I grow peppers, tomatoes, potato's, Okra and Green beans in half whisky barrels now and then I grow lettuces in the same barrels in the fall. Thanks
Great video
Very helpful
I love bent carrots!!
This is my second year during tomatoes in containers and this years past I've had success. Last year the plants grew but I had no tomatoes but I've watched your videos and I learned my mistake I did which was the container was to small this year I also tried zucchini in container and I have a lot of zucchinis growing. I'm also tried cucumber and I think maybe I'll try the carrots know.
Good information
Thank you very much.
Amen about bent carrots...😊 ...Pride to want only perfect carrots. they will be delicious! I have started my carrots. Short n sweet, Red and purple...Im excited..thanks for the video! God bless you and family and love the videos. I love that you are stressing the "perfection" and being real about nature and we have to walk this out. We will get better as knowledge increases 😊 Thankyou!
Great video 👍👍
yes going try grow carrots in containers
I've planted some scarlet varieties & probably have 5 more weeks to go before harvesting them (: can't wait to find out how they look
I can't wait to hear how they turn out! That is so exciting! Scarlet runner is so pretty.
Thanks! I was t to try carrots
Gonna try this soon
I like this guy!
Thank you!
Super helpful!
JSteedfast .
Thank you
I’m growing carrots
Im in Ga and plan to start some carrots next month..
I would love to see you try to grow artichoke in a large container. Would be a fun experiment and I would love to see results for those of us who can't overwinter them in our climates.
Hi, Luke-I am a new subscriber-love your channel. I received a free pack of Danvers carrots and bought potting mix today to give this a try. Thanks for the great info.
I just planted carrots seed, in a plastic round blue kiddie pool I got out of garbage,, works great, 4 bags of soil almost fill it up!
And to touch on watering, where applicable, I think we should all dig a shallow well and have rain catch containers for watering our plants. I am digging a shallow well this year right smackdab in the middle of my garden and putting a watering method attsr he's to it so when I pump it waters all my plants at the ground level.
I think I'll build a 4 foot long, 24" wide raised bed western red cedar planter box tomorrow for carrots. It will be on legs with a shelf in the box for the growing area. I'm building it at a 3' height. No bending over for planting/ weeding etc. This should be a nice addition to my garden area here in northwestern Ontario.
Cool video 😎
I like the video.love it.😉
Have you done a video on how to grow potatoes in containers? If so I would love to check out that video!
You've inspired me! I generally grow from seed indoors then transplant outdoors. If transplanting is not good. What month do you plant and when do you harvest, or how long does it take to grow these carrots. I am in zone 3 Alberta, Canada
Watch the video by Simply gardening about growing carrots in containers. Dude grew 31 carrots in a 10 inch pot. The spacing only has to be the size of the carrots. About three quarters of an inch apart was all that was needed. The carrots were perfectly straight and great looking. Correction that video was on a channel called Homegrown veg
I have two kinds of carrots in my raised beds but in containers I have cherry tomato, Swiss chard, jalepeno peppers, lettuce, spring onions. Can't wait for carrots.
