Budgeting is very easy. The problem is many people just don't want to do it. I use a simple dollar store lined notebook and a pen. Easy peasy. I take my monthly income, list the bills and savings, and any yearly or bi yearly bills and do simple subtraction. What is left over gets divided into the remaining days until I get paid again. I've been widowed for over 15 yrs, so it's all on me, but when I was married, I took care of the day to day expenses and my husband took care of the bigger things like savings, and investments, retirement etc. . I think one of the best things to do when budgeting is to prepare for the "what ifs" in like . I am currently dealing with some needed ,unexpected construction on my home. Thankfully I am debt free, and I have the money needed for this big project put aside in my emergency fund. I go over my finances daily. It only takes maybe 5 minutes. 🥰🍋🍒🍑💐💗✝

One of the best videos I have seen on budgeting. I have been budgeting for many years, but I have not always been sure where to put the money. And slipped up at times with the annual amounts, especially with saving for a new car! Thank you.

my 90 year old Mum still does her budget every year in a book so I learnt that from an early age, that along with decades in banking kept me in good stead when we had a sever impact on our income when I was made redundant, started my own business which was then shut down due to the pandemic - budgeting has been key - an excellent video Jane & Michael, your teaching skills come across very well, it should be taught in schools

Don't forget to include household supplies and personal care items. I separate these from food so I know how much I'm paying for each. I buy food every month, but I buy cleaning supplies, shampoo, soap, laundry/dish detergent, toilet paper, toothpaste, etc...less often. Even though I'm always looking for bargains, I divide this by 12 each year and budget that amount so I can buy what I need when it's on sale.

Totally agree on doing a budget with your partner/spouse...My stepmother had no idea what bills her and my dad had, where to pay even the water bill, how much money they had in the bank...my dad took care of it all and when he passed I had to help her learn about all their finances...

100% agree. I had a an old school friend whose father died and Mother had never looked at the books and when he died they found out they were a few weeks away from bankruptcy, had to sell the house etc and the kids ended up supporting her financially for the rest of her life!

Simple first step for a budget
    Pen
    Paper
    List of all your bills
List of all the money you have coming in..
Write everything down and get scarcely honest.
Everything gets written down. From that you work out where you need more and can make cuts.

That's how I have always done it. Keep it simple. I have kept simple dollar store lined notebooks, and write it all down. It's nice to be able to go back and see the previous years.

Jane and Mike that was a great video, thank you for making it all so clear. I’ve been watching you both for a while and snatching tips here and there but now feel ready to “honestly” make a budget and stick to it! Honestly being the key word here no sneaky coffee’s or extra yoga classes here and there. I’ll keep watching as it helps me to stay motivated. I like reading all the comments that are left too from others like me who struggle with keeping track of their finances and those who have been budgeting for years. A big thank you to all of you guys as well!

Great video and perfect timing for us. Our household has recently dropped to one income due to illness and this will be ongoing so we are in the process of revisiting our budget from scratch. I’m sure that we can manage and this video has given us an excellent starting point. Thank you

You are correct ,all this is very good advice ,we do exactly as you describe it works for us ,fixed income is hard to work ,be as stricked as possible don't be tempted to use vital cash , wait a bit we always check our budget weekly it's that tight but we don't have debt, that is peace of mind for us it is "worth it's weight in gold "
Great video Jayne I'm sure it will make life a lot easier once your advice is understood .

One of the things I’ve had to do to help my budget was to recognize what triggers me to impulsive spend which was looking at UA-camrs who do shopping hauls and room make overs that is something that I’ve had to back away from which has now helped me to get focus I don’t know 🤷🏽‍♀️ if this info could be helpful to anyone but it is helpful to me no matter what you can do it it’s been challenging for me but once I’ve begun to see progress believe me family you can do it too ❤

Excellent video; if only it were converted into a course for all young people in school! I agree, once a budget is well established, a fe minutes spent to customize the next month's budget helps account for what's ahead and what varies. I also track my spending daily so there is no big dreaded chore to record things later and no surprises. I like to pay my bills as they come in so I don't overlook something. Thanks!

Figure C. You say calculate how much you need each year. Divide by 12 and that is how much you save each year - should breach month.
    Very comprehensive.

Do your foresee more British people moving abroad to France and Spain for a potentially better quality of life and health care ? Once Australians would go to Britain for a year and earn good money on the pound. Now I can’t think of anyone who would do their gap year there. Too expensive and low pay. Some say it’s not what you earn it’s what you spend but in reality these days you need two adults earning high incomes to even afford food and rent. It’s crazy. 🇦🇺

No, many less. The UK left the EU and it very difficult to get a work visa for most European countries. Unless you meet the retirement income, you can’t get a residency visa either.
