It’s a work of art. I don’t know how anyone could be critical of this film. This is exactly what we all want from massive Hollywood blockbusters. At least in my opinion.

It seemed to me that once Paul learned about his Harkonnen heritage, his severity and ruthlessness ramped up. The council scene was right after that

Chalaemet is not only incredibly charismatic, but he's perfect casting for Paul. Vincenzo needs to reread the book.

I will never understand the need for film reviewers to be cruel and insulting. There is no power in it and actually diminishes the reviewer and their review. There was no need to insult Timothee personally. I agree that Chalamet is charismatic and his talent was being able to play the cautious newcomer, transition into a seasoned Fremen, and finally to "do what must be done." He plays all of those roles brilliantly. Paul's transition takes place after the WOL when he tells his mother what he has seen and what he must do. Be Harkonnens. I don't know how much more explanation Vincenzo needed. Also, Walken is precisely who he needed to be. He is the aging Emperor grooming the Princess Irulan to replace him. In the words of Timothee Chalamet... be kind.

I think what changed Paul's mind was not as he drank the water. When I was watching Dune part 2 I noticed how adamant Paul was all about NOT going south because of the massive loss of life it might lead to, but I knew he would do it eventually (having read the book). I was looking for when he would flip on his decision. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was after he and the fremen were returning to their sietch. It was in a smoking ruin because the Harkonnen had attacked it. Then they found out all of their strongholds had been decimated. Chani tells him (and I'm paraphrasing) that "sometimes events in our life tell us where we will go next". He ends up taking the worm south, where his mother had the water of life ready for him.
Yes, the water of life changed him, but I don't think it changed his mind to go forward with his destiny - I think it cemented his decision by opening his mind to all possible timelines to where he thought he could find the way. He isn't fallible, and is capable of making the wrong choice that will STILL lead to genocide while obtaining ultimate power.

Paul’s decision making at the end seemed quick because he envisioned the “Golden Path” a narrow path, if followed will prevent humanity’s extinction.

These guys, other than Jeff it seems, haven't read the books in decades if at all. I do think the movie failed a bit in demonstrating the extent of Paul's power post water of life. ...outside of a few parlor tricks.

So my question is… since the Sandworm is traveling SO quickly in a straight line through the desert with Paul, HOW does Paul survive the dismount? Does he quickly jump off before getting a concussion when arriving at a rock island, or does he quickly roll off before the Sandworm goes back under ? Does the Sandworm ‘ know’ to slowly stop and deliver him to the final destination so Paul walks off its back ?

    • @JGfromSpace.
      @JGfromSpace. 6 місяців тому +2

There’s a full explanation for this in the books. The hook things open up a gap in the worms armor. Worms don’t like sand getting in there, so they roll over to keep the exposed part of their armor out of the sand. So there’s no fear of the worm going under the sand when you’re riding it. I don’t remember the mechanics of dismounting.

I think Paul's actions were based that he knows the future. He said explicitly "She (Chani) will come around to what he's doing. That's why he lacked a lot of empathy and was more forceful in his decisions (ie Dr. Manhattan from the Watchmen).

Yeah , I just want more of this world, give Tony Gilroy or a Tony Gilroy protege/apprentice or someone from the Andor writing team a show off this world, just saying this because I know Villeneuve is going to move on to other stuff.
What great world building , the acting was so strong, Lady Jessica presence was chilling. Kinda hyped for where Anya Taylor Joy is going to do in the future.
The imagery with those antigravity packs and sound , like the whole team and crew did top tier work.

If you haven't already, you should watch the VF scene breakdown video Villeneuve does for the grandfather sandworm riding scene. I'm not going to spoil the magic, but I can tell you that the dune collapse was done physically!

FYI, I know you will revisit David Lylnch's Dune in the After Dark but I think it would be worthwhile for all of you to watch the SciFi mini series Dune and its sequel mini-series Children of Dune. It had it's own problems but was far more faithful to the books.

I actually thought I heard Zendaya laughing while she ran away after shooting the enemies down, which I felt gave her more development as a character however I could be wrong 35:31

I am also of a certain vintage where I saw David Lynch's Dune in the theater. It came out in 1984 and I remember thinking that this was going to be my next Star wars, since return of the Jedi had ended the trilogy the year before. I like Vincenzo was extremely disappointed in the movie. I remember coming out of the theater so confused and wondering what did I just watch. That all said, I hadn't read the book previously so the movie actually inspired me to go and read the book so I could hopefully understand what I had watched. Of course the book was AMAZING and all it did was make me more angry at the movie for not only leaving things out, But adding things that didn't need to be there.
I will say over the years my stance has softened a bit on the Original Dune movie in the sense that the "look" of that movie is what is in my head when I imagine Dune. That is part of the reason I did not enjoy the Syfy series of Dune even though it was much more book accurate. Also it was on syfy and it just looked cheaply made. I was afraid I was going to have the same problem with the new Dune. But to my surprise Denis Villeneuve found a nice mix of bringing his own style and look to the movie, well finding some areas to give nods to the original Dune movie. I do think Denis Villeneuve's Dune is the defining Dune adaptation. But I still have a fondness for the original Dune movie even though I hated at the time.

Mostly with Dave on this one and agree with Vincenzo that it drops the ball at the key point of Paul's story. Overall feels more like a ride than a story. Some all-time awesome spectacle and cool design work but fairly weak in the characterization department. A lot of fun sound and thrilling fury but signifying not much of anything.

Because Denis is only doing messiah, because that has a great ending for Paul's story. The story after that is about Paul's children, and that gets into stuff that's so freaky that it would be a potential career killer for anyone trying to adapt that to a movie.

The main problem I had with this film is how much it condensed the timeline. You can't raise a messiah and a jihad in the amount of time the film spent instead of the years that Paul spent in the book. This was the same problem I had with Part I. It seems Villeneuve can't do the passage-of-time so he just writes it out of his script.

Spectacular in what? In the pretty visuals. Yeah. But what about the world building? The Factions? The whole reason why they are fighting for Arrakis? Part 2 barely added any lore, they are nothing more than crumbs, and the changed that it made are really stupid, like suggesting that Feyd Rautha would be replacement for Paul, when, one, Jesssica meant to have a daughter not a son, and she only did it because he loved the Duke, two, Feyd mother even that she was a Bene Gesserit never was in the breeding program, three, Kwisatz Haderach is the female perfect being that the Bene Gesserit were planning for generations, after Paul and his son Leto II reign, they turn the term into a derogatory term, calling them abominations, even that Alia also was called that, because she was tainted by the water of life, funny, the Bene Gesserit finally get what they wanted, but Alia couldn't even control herself.
