I was so looking forward to this movie, so much that I watched Independents Day (not the original, the one that came out a few months ago). I just hope this is the one movie I like that Jeremy didn't.

While I was watching this in the cinema after watching reviews, initially thinking it would be bad, it quite good and funny, I was watching this with my dad and he died of laughter, I asked him why he laughed so much, he said "It's a movie Mark, its supposed to entertain you and you're not supposed to take seriously".

Roland Emmerich isn't that bad. His made some bad ones such as Godzilla 98 and Independence Day is kinda stupid. However his made some decent action movies such as Universal Soldier, Stargate and White House Down.
you might not remember it word-for-word but you should remember it somewhat. At the very least who said it. Otherwise it must not have been very impactful.
Just watched it, and I've gotta say I don't agree with a single point you made. 1. The movie starts with the harvester queen receiving the distress signal from Earth. It is exactly the same except the sequel doesn't have the luxury of the aliens being shrouded in mystery. You can't recreate the iconic start to the first movie because everyone knows they're hostile. 2. I had no problems with the character introductions. The ensemble cast makes it feel like we're all a part of the struggle. There's not supposed to be a single main character, and I feel like that's done for a reason. 3. I had no trouble distinguishing the completely black alien fighters from the light grey human fighters and bombers. 4. The ship that landed in Africa was at the START of the previous movie not after. The entire point of that was to reveal that they had already tried to drill to the Earth core. Thus the line, "this one is 20 times bigger". After the destruction of the mothership in the first movie the drill stopped working, and the remaining aliens had to resort to basic survival instinct. This mixed with the warlord from that area being unwilling to cooperate with outsiders initiated a long war between indigenous peoples and the aliens from the derelict drill ship. As a side note, this also set up the reasoning for Dillon Hiller to know to shoot the queen in the back to disable her exo-suit. 5. The stakes were much bigger, and I don't really know how you didn't feel them. We were much closer to extinction this time, and there was the very real possibility that the insurgent efforts by other civilizations would have failed if we allowed the alien ball to be captured by the queen. The whole universe was on the line, and I certainly felt it. As a concluding thought. This movie was never meant to be a character piece like the first one. This is a space epic, and is more about the lore. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. It's not perfect, but it was a damn faithful sequel to one of the best movies of my lifetime.

Not to mention those endless cheap low budget horror movies Hollywood threw out just to make money. They made many bad movies even at that time but everyone seems to have forgotten about them.

Having said that, I always have to watch out for spoilers in the first half of your reviews more than any other UA-camr claiming non-spoilers. Too much plot talk IMO. They put out a book that covered the time between films. I highly recommend it as it explains most of the things you had issues with. Best to get it from your local library. As much as I was interested, kinda wanted my $8 back after finishing it. But the coma, Africa, the relationships between the characters, all of that is explained well enough in the book to set things up.

Nobody seems to address the issue that Brent Spiner's character was In a coma for 20 years and he just suddenly wakes up and is able to get out of his bed and start walking around.
Just came back from seeing it before I watched this. The start was a mess, the relationships weren't believable, the hero's were too blaze' and carefree and the threat never felt real or imminent. I absolutely love the first movie and still watch it from time to time. But this was forced, fake, lame and cheese to the eyeballs. Too bad. I love Geoff Goldblum.

Strongly disagree, I wasn't bored of this film at all, it was NOT slow at the start, it actually felt way faster than the first, It was soooo dumb that it was HILARIOUS. Almost reminded me of Starship Troopers, I loved the patriotism, it was so funny. The movie did not take itself too seriously at all and that was very refreshing after seeing some really pretentious alien invasion movies like Battle L.A. Also, the aliens were fun to see with their original 90s design but with CG animation so they can do so much more than just sort of 'stand there'. And that "end battle"!!!!! Omg NO spoilers but it was so hilariously epic and awesome I was not expecting it. And omg the final shot and final line of dialogue was hilarious but no spoilers. Overall I found the movie to be highly entertaining, was not bored, had lots of nice little references to the first movie, surprising amount of character motivation in the script even for minor side characters. The fact that it was so unpretentious was very refreshing. And I have to praise the cinematography and editing because I could always see the action and I could tell what was happening all the time even in the most chaotic battles.
I went in expecting a fun popcorn flick like the first one - and the movie pretty much succeeded on that level. I love the idea they seem to be setting up for the third movie, so I hope this movie does well enough to green light the third one. There was definitely some fat to be cut (like Judd Hirsch's plotline and the Pearl Harbor esque fly-boy drama) ut they did not bog down the movie enough to complain too much about.
Jeremy, I have seen Independence Day:Insurgence since it came out. My expectations are low. It is because I have found out that they will introduced new characters likes of Joey King, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Usher who will play Will Smith's son in the previous movie. I didn't like his acting. It was atrocious. He should go take some acting classes.

This movie was shot through with plot-holes. I had to turn my critical faculties off and suspension of disbelief up to max, and just sit back and watch the man vs alien carnage. The battles looked good, and I thought the queen looked really cool ambulating across the desert...
I agree with most of your review. However, I'll argue one point. You definitely feel the stakes in the second one. They point the stakes in your face. The Earth's gonna get destroyed completely. That's much bigger stakes than the first one, which only felt like the humans were in trouble.
It's a movie. of course it's a cash grab attempt. But a well entertaining cash grab attempt. Stop waiting for people to tell you what to do and make up your own mind. Go see it. Or don't. But do it because YOU want to. Not because some person behind a camera on the interwebs told you to.

Shawn Anomaly I loved ID4 honestly. And I loved this movie. I'd say don't judge it till you try it. Don't matter when and where or how I'd say give it a shot for yourself. Kade Smash I would but I barely liked the original, it's just not my cup of tea. I've never been into the corny stuff or the lighthearted affair type movies and ID4 is exactly that with the addition of cool CGI destruction/visuals. I'll probably watch it one day but it'll be when it's free on t.v. like I do many "blockbuster" movies. I'm a very picky person when it comes down to movies I watch. Only THREE even peaked my interest this summer and that was Civil War, BvS, and Jason Bourne. I was disappointed with BvS (already knew it would based on the trailers), enjoyed Civil War, and I'll wait for Bourne to come out on BluRay. Not one iota of interest in anything else in the "Summer Blockbuster" lineup. I've been batting 100% on movies being good/bad based on their trailers for my own taste; I doubt ID4:R would change that.
I don't know why you said the first movie started off with a bang. In the first movie they show the ship pretty quick but there's about a half hour of stuff on earth before they actually attack. They are just hovering over the landmarks for a while.

the problem with this movie is that there is no action whatsoever. even if there was it was glossed over only showing for a brief couple seconds. barely any destruction pornn the most we got put of that was the dubai tower following into the ground and 2 buildings being broken in half. other than those and and a glompse of an airbus falling thats it within its 1hr 54mins of bullshit. the rest is stupid dialogue, annoying characters. there was only 5% real action and carnage in this entire movie. Brent Spiner was annoying, jeff goldblum was phoning it in, and that's it. this by far one of the worst films I've ever seen and i like Roland Emmerich. but damn did he completely fuck this movie up along with 'zilla 98

Independence Day is my favorite disaster movie. It wasn't just action and destruction, it was badass and likeable characters. I thought the music and certain scenes made it feel more great to watch around fourth of july. Now, i know how other sequels that they make these days of awesome 80s/90s movies aren't that good, but i still try to keep my hopes high for Independence Day Resurgence, i hope it can still be a good movie, compared to Independence Day being frickin amazing!

Earth is triumphant again thanks to all the young folk who fight for planet and glory, and to get a hot date just to have Brent Spinner get tons of advanced technology from a Good alien just so we can have interstellar/intergalactic space travel and go and get the bad Aliens where ever they are … Yes we'll get to see another wasted sequel coming soon to a theater/TV screen/computer screen near you. I just saw this movie yesterday. Loved it. Bill Pullman's character reminded you of why he was a president 20 years ago. He was brave and heroic. Jeff Goldblume was awesome in his original role, so was Brent Spiner. The aliens were even entertaining. Give it a try. Highly recommended, guys. Enjoy.

Just watched it, and I've gotta say I don't agree with a single point you made.
1. The movie starts with the harvester queen receiving the distress signal from Earth. It is exactly the same except the sequel doesn't have the luxury of the aliens being shrouded in mystery. You can't recreate the iconic start to the first movie because everyone knows they're hostile.
2. I had no problems with the character introductions. The ensemble cast makes it feel like we're all a part of the struggle. There's not supposed to be a single main character, and I feel like that's done for a reason.
3. I had no trouble distinguishing the completely black alien fighters from the light grey human fighters and bombers.
4. The ship that landed in Africa was at the START of the previous movie not after. The entire point of that was to reveal that they had already tried to drill to the Earth core. Thus the line, "this one is 20 times bigger". After the destruction of the mothership in the first movie the drill stopped working, and the remaining aliens had to resort to basic survival instinct. This mixed with the warlord from that area being unwilling to cooperate with outsiders initiated a long war between indigenous peoples and the aliens from the derelict drill ship. As a side note, this also set up the reasoning for Dillon Hiller to know to shoot the queen in the back to disable her exo-suit.
5. The stakes were much bigger, and I don't really know how you didn't feel them. We were much closer to extinction this time, and there was the very real possibility that the insurgent efforts by other civilizations would have failed if we allowed the alien ball to be captured by the queen. The whole universe was on the line, and I certainly felt it.
As a concluding thought. This movie was never meant to be a character piece like the first one. This is a space epic, and is more about the lore. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. It's not perfect, but it was a damn faithful sequel to one of the best movies of my lifetime.

Not to mention those endless cheap low budget horror movies Hollywood threw out just to make money. They made many bad movies even at that time but everyone seems to have forgotten about them.

Having said that, I always have to watch out for spoilers in the first half of your reviews more than any other UA-camr claiming non-spoilers. Too much plot talk IMO. They put out a book that covered the time between films. I highly recommend it as it explains most of the things you had issues with. Best to get it from your local library. As much as I was interested, kinda wanted my $8 back after finishing it. But the coma, Africa, the relationships between the characters, all of that is explained well enough in the book to set things up.

sorry but there is a limit on suspension of disbelief, and when characters are terrible, action is not interesting, this issues are more noticable, thats why it sucks.
Nobody seems to address the issue that Brent Spiner's character was In a coma for 20 years and he just suddenly wakes up and is able to get out of his bed and start walking around.

Just came back from seeing it before I watched this. The start was a mess, the relationships weren't believable, the hero's were too blaze' and carefree and the threat never felt real or imminent. I absolutely love the first movie and still watch it from time to time. But this was forced, fake, lame and cheese to the eyeballs. Too bad. I love Geoff Goldblum.

Strongly disagree, I wasn't bored of this film at all, it was NOT slow at the start, it actually felt way faster than the first,
It was soooo dumb that it was HILARIOUS. Almost reminded me of Starship Troopers, I loved the patriotism, it was so funny.
The movie did not take itself too seriously at all and that was very refreshing after seeing some really pretentious alien invasion movies like Battle L.A. Also, the aliens were fun to see with their original 90s design but with CG animation so they can do so much more than just sort of 'stand there'. And that "end battle"!!!!! Omg NO spoilers but it was so hilariously epic and awesome I was not expecting it. And omg the final shot and final line of dialogue was hilarious but no spoilers.
Overall I found the movie to be highly entertaining, was not bored, had lots of nice little references to the first movie, surprising amount of character motivation in the script even for minor side characters. The fact that it was so unpretentious was very refreshing. And I have to praise the cinematography and editing because I could always see the action and I could tell what was happening all the time even in the most chaotic battles.
I actually liked the movie but only think it was due to my excitement of a sequel being made. but looking back it was forgettable

I went in expecting a fun popcorn flick like the first one - and the movie pretty much succeeded on that level. I love the idea they seem to be setting up for the third movie, so I hope this movie does well enough to green light the third one. There was definitely some fat to be cut (like Judd Hirsch's plotline and the Pearl Harbor esque fly-boy drama) ut they did not bog down the movie enough to complain too much about.
Jeremy, I have seen Independence Day:Insurgence since it came out. My expectations are low. It is because I have found out that they will introduced new characters likes of Joey King, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Usher who will play Will Smith's son in the previous movie. I didn't like his acting. It was atrocious. He should go take some acting classes.

This 20 year late sequel has 2 things against it, no, 3 thIngs. No Will Smith, it's going up against Finding Dory and cardboard Jeff Goldblum is the lead.
This movie was shot through with plot-holes. I had to turn my critical faculties off and suspension of disbelief up to max, and just sit back and watch the man vs alien carnage. The battles looked good, and I thought the queen looked really cool ambulating across the desert...
I can never help to criticize a movie for obvious plot holes x.x This one might've given me a couple of white hairs.

I agree with most of your review. However, I'll argue one point. You definitely feel the stakes in the second one. They point the stakes in your face. The Earth's gonna get destroyed completely. That's much bigger stakes than the first one, which only felt like the humans were in trouble.

Shawn Anomaly I loved ID4 honestly. And I loved this movie. I'd say don't judge it till you try it. Don't matter when and where or how I'd say give it a shot for yourself. O_o I've made that mistake several times, thinking something looked boring or uninteresting and then for whatever reason end up trying it... and loving the crap out of it.
Kade Smash I would but I barely liked the original, it's just not my cup of tea. I've never been into the corny stuff or the lighthearted affair type movies and ID4 is exactly that with the addition of cool CGI destruction/visuals.
I'll probably watch it one day but it'll be when it's free on t.v. like I do many "blockbuster" movies. I'm a very picky person when it comes down to movies I watch.
Only THREE even peaked my interest this summer and that was Civil War, BvS, and Jason Bourne. I was disappointed with BvS (already knew it would based on the trailers), enjoyed Civil War, and I'll wait for Bourne to come out on BluRay. Not one iota of interest in anything else in the "Summer Blockbuster" lineup.

the problem with this movie is that there is no action whatsoever. even if there was it was glossed over only showing for a brief couple seconds. barely any destruction pornn the most we got put of that was the dubai tower following into the ground and 2 buildings being broken in half. other than those and and a glompse of an airbus falling thats it within its 1hr 54mins of bullshit. the rest is stupid dialogue, annoying characters. there was only 5% real action and carnage in this entire movie. Brent Spiner was annoying, jeff goldblum was phoning it in, and that's it. this by far one of the worst films I've ever seen and i like Roland Emmerich. but damn did he completely fuck this movie up along with 'zilla 98

Let's see, Jeremy said it was disappointing, and Chris said it was disappointing, guess I won't be seeing it.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not skipping it simply because reviewers I like said they didn't like it. The main reason I am skipping it is because there are movies that peak my interests more, and now I'm not even curious about it.
Independence Day is my favorite disaster movie. It wasn't just action and destruction, it was badass and likeable characters. I thought the music and certain scenes made it feel more great to watch around fourth of july. Now, i know how other sequels that they make these days of awesome 80s/90s movies aren't that good, but i still try to keep my hopes high for Independence Day Resurgence, i hope it can still be a good movie, compared to Independence Day being frickin amazing!
By the way haven't seen it yet saving it for July 3rd or 4th.

20 years pass and Jeff Goldblum’s father, Judd Hirsh, hasn’t aged at all. What happened to Jeff's beautiful wife? Now he’s enamored with a dawg! That and the country is being run by a female president who doesn’t know her A from her E and gets herself and her close associates killed.
Then there the bad aliens with a bigger ship which is going to suck the core out of our planet (count down to end of movie) … what happened to the same bad aliens which were only going to take our resources and leave us destitute?
Of course the bad aliens have to have a very large queen … shades of Alien.
YES!!!! Earth is triumphant again thanks to all the young folk who fight for planet and glory, and to get a hot date just to have Brent Spinner get tons of advanced technology from a Good alien just so we can have interstellar/intergalactic space travel and go and get the bad Aliens where ever they are … Yes we'll get to see another wasted sequel coming soon to a theater/TV screen/computer screen near you. BLECH!!!

I just saw this movie yesterday. Loved it. Bill Pullman's character reminded you of why he was a president 20 years ago. He was brave and heroic. Jeff Goldblume was awesome in his original role, so was Brent Spiner. The aliens were even entertaining. Give it a try. Highly recommended, guys. Enjoy.
