James Gunn originally wanted to make this an adult comedy that parodies the conventions of Scooby Doo, and it shows.

This movie had an actual impact on Daphne as a character in the franchise. In the cartoon movies and video games following she was the martial artist of the group and actually brought something to the table instead of being the damsel in distress and I got to grow up with Daphne as the cool confident fighter. This movie is pure cinema and deserves respect

We actually just rewatched this movie a few weeks ago. The reason Velma’s wardrobe changes is that they’re brainwashing the monsters into looking and behaving like average teenagers. It actually makes a lot of sense why Velma’s wardrobe changed while her soul was out of her body, it wasn’t her. She was being changed to look more modern/with the times. And immediately in the next scenes after she gets her soul back she’s back in her usual attire that fits her personality more.

    1. A couple of years after this movie, Matthew Lillard became the main voice actor for Shaggy Rogers

These Scooby-Doo fans seem to not realize the amount of fame that both FPJ and SMG had in the late 90s and early 2000s, where they were staples of their genre. It's like they think of Scooby-Doo as being the reason that both actors are even famous and that it was responsible for them becoming a couple. This is obviously completely wrong, as they were both typecast as stand-ins for high schoolers.

It's not the monster's breath that takes the souls, that just knocks people out. The artifact that Daphne found, that we later see on Scrappy's chest is how the soul stealing happened. That's why the monsters needed to carry the bodies to a different location

The movie was then changed after a couple parents were "outraged" at a local test screening. So i hope that highlights some stuff. So I hate to be this person but there actually is a reason that velma is dressed like that. The college students are getting possessed by monsters after their souks are being stolen and they make them act like "modern young adults" which includes making them talk in aave and dressing more like this lol. There is actually a deleted scene where velma is dancing on a bar while possessed.

So this film was originally meant to be a dark comedy satire of scooby doo. Then the studio got involved and said it needed to be a kids film. So the "bad" decisions were actually quite intentional and funny, but the comedy of them got lost as the studio got more influence.

Well, actually the Mr. Bean's character already owned the island/etc, Scrappy took over. He said something about Scrappy showing up for an "Audition for our evil elves" or something, but it was like half-mumbled IIRC so it's easy to miss. The rest of the Scrappy plan is a bit odd still. Also, I had this on during work so sorry if I missed you mentioning, but the other reason they had Daphne in that really fun fight scene is she was played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy, and this filmed/released was during the show's run (IIRC Buffy ended in 03).
My mom and I would watch both this and it's sequel (which is admittedly better in every single way) so many times when I was growing up. I still love them and they are the best kind of dumb fun. A Pup Named Scooby-Doo was rerun a TON until like the mid-00s, especially in the late mornings. It was commonly my "I'm home sick" cartoon as a kid.
Also, I'm pretty sure the filming was all done before 9/11 happened, which is why Scooby could do *that* and not get stopped by airport security. People forget (and I barely have any memory of it myself, honestly) that a lot of airports used to be SUPER lax.
Linda Cardellini (Velma) would later voice Marcie in the '10s series Mystery Incorporated, who was a villain/rival of Velma's, then later a friend with *implications* that was later confirmed by creators to be intended/written to be Velma's girlfriend but had to tone it down as well.

Actually, this movie was originally meant for an older audience.
And Velma's Wardrobe Change happened in a deleted scene that didn't make it into the final cut. There was A LOT cut out of this movie and a lot more that never even made it into the Film Production. But her Wardrobe absolutely makes sense when you look into the background and History of this movie and it's deleted/not even included scenes. Oh, and did I mention that a lot of scenes were RE-SHOT.... Like that scene with the BBQ Pit and the smoke coming out the top.... Let's just say the ORIGINAL Scene was mu h more 420 Friendly..! 😂 🤣

The monsters were taking the unconscious bodies back to the cave from soul extraction using that pryramind thing Daphne finds earlier in the movie. It got cut because it was deemed "too traumatizing" for children.
