    To clear up some misconceptions:
    10) The criminals being cut in half were sentenced to death in this way. So it wasn’t really about the Samurai, it was the severity of the crime.
    9) Of they were caught killing someone for no reason, they’d be sentenced to sepuku.
    8) only the ones that were (arguably) sociopaths.
    7) the term “Marriage” in Japan is not as “deep,” for lack of a better term, as it is in modern western culture.
    6) This depended on the severity of the crime of the samurai, and if the wife was the main wife, or a lower concubine.
    5) Bushido is a mind-set, as well as a set code, the way it is used in the video is referring to the code, which did end up ending a lot of lives, but the original Bushido, was just a way of conducting yourself socially.
    4) yeah, it’s called dog-hunting, idk if you know anything about Japanese topography, or geography, but the terrain is extremely unforgiving, more so, then the Rocky Mountains, so, you shoot, kill, and eat any animal you can find, so long as there is no religious emphasis placed on it.
    3) they were heavy on consent, and there is cultural differences between western civilization, and Japan. Also, I don’t support it at all, I’m just explaining it.
    2) this is called, Bobby-Joe f*cked up and slipped through the cracks, and his life went to sh*t so he couldn’t find a job and be came a piece of sh*t person cause he had no choice and never got back on his feet even though he’s trying and he....
    1) Also known as “Highly Organized Crime” or even, get this, “Mafias!” This is pretty much the same as the last, except they used their stealings to loan-shark, gamble, and buy expensive, fancy, flashy clothing, like a late 40’s Italian Mobster.

    Simon, your sources are bad.
Firstly, an executioner killed convicted criminals (usually rapist, thieves, and murders), the others were dead already, and posted to a sand hill like cordwood. Hence the inscription on the tangs of the blades as "4 body blades, etc".
You also state that Samurai women were required to commit suicide if their husbands did. Not always true. A samurai wife was a highly skilled warrior in her own right. They were highly skilled in the use of the Naganata and often fought alongside their husbands. Thus if their houses lost, they too killed themselves.
And I take great issue with you saying that the Ronin were too lazy to work. Most samurai were highly skilled, in writing, numbers , the arts, and many other things. Who do you think wrote most of Japanese history? Who do you think accounted for a villages stores? And most were actors as well.
I am not Japanese or Samurai, I just appreciate the culture.

Fun video. A few slight corrections or additions: Samurai weren't just trained to be proficient with a bow, the bow was actually the original samurai weapon, and was originally used on horseback, far before the katana was developed which is also not the original sword (that would be the tachi, a long curved sword used from horseback). It could also be argued that the wakizashi embodies the samurai even more than any of these weapons because it was the blade that they would use to cut themselves during seppuku. Speaking of which, wives were not obligated to commit seppuku, which for women was called jigai. They had the option to, but this was a far less common occurrence than a male samurai (yes, there were female samurai, it was a social class not just a job) doing so. Women were often ordered to become nuns if they had been shamed but not badly enough or in grave enough danger to commit jigai. Also women didn't cut their abdomens when they did decide to kill themselves, they stabbed themselves in the throat or would simply be ritually beheaded by a guard if possible. Wives also were not merely servants, they manahed the household, including all financial transactions, including the purchase or arrangement of consorts for their husbands. Being a wife was I'm sure not easy, but it was incredibly honorable. let's not forget that at this point in history in Japan coitus was viewed as simply a form of entertainment, release and a way to make babies, and people had a lot of sex back then in Japan, and "love" was rare and complex when it was even allowed to get in the way of Bushido.

I want to correct you and add one thing more...
When the samurai commited seppuku, he could use the tanto too, and when/if he had a kaishakunin("headcutter") present the head wasn't completely cut off. If done correctely there would be a small slice left at the throat, so the head could be bowed to his chest.

Well, should be a short comparison. Knights had better weapons and armor due to the better metal quality in Europe, were equally trained and had a somewhat equal code of honor, except they don't kill themself when dishonored. Also they were clever enough to use shields to block incoming attacks and ranged weapons. Looks pretty bad for the Samurai.

    • @matiokong5112

+SirGeforce the samurai where able to come up with a more powerful sword the katana and a better more accurate bow as well as a more complete sword martial art and the a lot of samurai where willing to use guns later on which goes though armor and shields and the quality of armor varied for both knights anyway. and samurai anyway. and the gear doesn't really change that the Knights also did some messed up thing like ,be sexist, also killing people when dishonored, force their religion on people, burn villages, conquer land, and of course the crusades . The main reason people compare knights is they often get a free pass cause it's heroic or honorable as for the samurai "while still treated like heroes but not as much" are treated bad cause it's from a different culture in this case and also cause their a little more popular then most warriors

Read accounts of so-called kamikaze pilots. They were typically young and had no choice and few if any were fanatical. For example: Hachiro Sasaki was born in 1922 into an upper middle-class Japanese family and drafted from the University of Tokyo in 1943. He was a fine sportsman and a brilliant student.
Left-wing and idealistic, Hachiro was against the war but nevertheless felt he had a responsibility to play a part in it and eventually to sacrifice himself. He thought that Japan had become corrupt - like its enemies - and that the only solution was to build a new Japan out of the ashes.
At the same time, he was resigned to his fate. He felt that, like the poet Rupert Brooke in the 1914-18 war, 'if one must die, one must die beautifully', falling like the cherry blossom.
Just before Hachiro was drafted, he handed over all the essays he had written to his brother. He died on a kamikaze mission on April 14, 1945.

Why do you consider barbaric violent traits to be messed up? Isn't that how we all are? Maybe it would be messed up if you compare those traits to how you want things to be, but the world is how it is. you would call the world messed up when you compare it to your delusion, but your delusion does not exist. I don't think there is duality at all. Even if you do not like the state of the world, that does not change how things are. Now if you states your original comment, while also proposing a solution that would change the world, that would be an insightful comment. Anyone can point out a problem, but that isn't helpful.

Anyway, many points in this video (such as the WWII and dog hunting “facts”) are very similar to the practices of European cultures. Replace dogs with foxes and kamikaze pilots with many unfortunate soviets and you have practically the same thing. A dog doesn’t deserve to live more than a cow, but we eat cows and not dogs. Other cultures have different views. The same logic applies to the topic of seppuku.
Women of the lower class would generally not be the wives of samurai. Even then, a dowry was a normal thing for any wife to give to her husband for thousands of years. It’s been the same in Mesopotamia, Rome, France, and any other nation.
Ronin were not necessarily bad. They just had no lord of master. You could compare them to mercenaries during the Middle Ages.
Samurai that killed peasants for such small reasons were usually punished severely, and most would not risk their honour to kill a random civilian.
I don’t have the time to cover all the other points, but hopefully that clears things up a bit.

Simon bringing up that Samurai would kill people by testing their weapon creates a false narrative of “Samurai where allowed to kill random people for sport” when in fact it was a crime that was severely punished. Or thst they switched to different arrows to save money when in fact it was due to preassure from monks and them simply realising its “bad to their karma”

That part about Samurai having sexual relations with teenage boys, I learned about that just today, before watching this video, and man was it surprising. What was even more shocking was when I found out one of my favorite Sengoku Era warlords, Nobunaga Oda, also participated in this act with one of his aides. Perhaps even more weird is the fact that it was so normal back then for them to do this that they would have no problem getting married to a woman when they felt like doing so. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "ugly truth"

The Spartans also did this as well as with each other. It was common to seek the bottoms of boys as well as girls. In combat Spartans were often assigned a "battle buddy". He was part of the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) and had to break and interpret coded messages by the Japanese military; HOWEVER, my family is from the Samurai class, with our family name given many centuries ago by the Tokugawa Shogunate. I am here to say that you know NOTHING about the history of the Samurai and the meaning of Bushido and how it affected the daily life of the Samurai.

You are correct. Both sides of my mother's family were samurai and shogun of the Matsudaira and Seiwa bloodline. We have 400 year old artwork passed through the generations. The Etchu Sword and Etchu Samurai Armor carries her father's family history. She is still alive and has a sharp memory. She calls out the top 10 facts to be as fictional as the book Shogun. The top 10 horrifying facts in the video are marginalized liberal fantasies that have no understanding of Japanese culteral history or honor. The ancient samurai practiced Shinto, from which Bushido arose. If you look up the Shinto beliers, the mentioned facts are as polar opposide as hot and cold. This info video is a discredit to the ancient customs and honor of Japanese people and my mother's families.

this video is exceptionally biased and needlessly judgemental over a totally different culture and a different time. There are countless examples of what would pass for brutality nowadays in all Western culture and it is extremely easy to compile a list of "horrifying" facts about Christian soldiers in the Middle Ages, the Spanish Inquisition and its torture methods, the witch hunts in Salem, MA, and the list can go on forever.
what videos like these seek is but casting a moralist judgement over non-western cultural traits of other peoples disregarding the relative perspective one must always keep when analysing historical facts. it is biased by modern Western morals and ultimately disrespectful of the diversity of human culture.
the only "horrifying" thing about this video is that someone made it.

This is the first I've heard of cleaving a torso in two to test the sharpness of a blade.
However, I have previously read of criminals being lined up and BEHEADED to test a katana. The higher the number of heads taken off cleanly the better the quality of the weapon.
Other than types like the Odachi/Nodachi ( a 2handed sword with a blade 4 - 5' long ) most Japanese weapons are quite light and could not possibly slice through a torso without hacking at it for a while. Even pole arm type weapons wouldn't likely be able to do it since most of their size is made up of the pole rather than any blade. So anything short of a massive blade would make a huge gory mess.
A neck on the other hand is very possible to sever with a single neat stroke.
