Setlists and bookmarks are also really useful. Setlists create a seamless music list for services, concerts or specific occasions. They are akin to a music binder with everything in order. Bookmarks are good for breaking up large works or PDF books into smaller pieces/movements.

Great video! Very helpful! I’ve been considering getting an iPad Pro for just this use, and you’ve pushed me one step closer. I currently use a regular iPad with an Apple Pencil, but it’s a little too small and lacks the page turn feature. As to making stray marks with your hand, there’s an option in the pencil settings where you can choose to only draw with the pencil and not with your hand. With this setting on, your hand will not be able to draw, and this solves the stray marks problem.

So nice to come across your review as I do plan on investing in an iPad and didn’t know of any music apps to organize my scores. The page turning feature was particularly interesting. I hate turning pages! Thanks! Liked and subscribed!
I have just watched your iPad video and it was very interesting. There were a few things you didn't mention which I find very useful and there were some things you mentioned which I haven't tried yet so after seeing what you said, I am going to try them out.
While I have set up some libraries, I rarely use them. I find I use the Setlist feature far more and you didn't mention this. I have a setlist for each service and after a service is over, I duplicate it and then just add anything new for the next week and delete what is not needed for the next week. I have a folder set up for all the service setlists for each year so I can go back to any service and find the repertoire that was played. I email the setlists to my organ scholar and choir conductor so we all have the same setlist of repertoire and anything I have marked up will appear on their scores too plus it doesn't override their own markings (such as my scholar’s piston settings). I also have setlists for any recitals.
I have setlists for each student so I have their music altogether for their online lessons. I also have a setlist for sightreading, aural tests, syllabus etc. I find this much more useful than the library system.
There is also the new syncing feature which is really great. I have all my music available on both my iPads, iMacs and iPhone (you can use a second iPad as a second page and with the Cue app, you can wink and turn two pages at a time like printed music). I also have forScore on my computers so some editing is easier to do there. All the setlists sync too.
Another feature is layers and I have yet to explore this but I understand that if you are playing the same piece on multiple instruments, you can have a layer for each instrument so that you write the registration details on that organ's layer and you don't have to have the situation with paper music with multiple registration markings for different organs which can become confusing.
With the page turning, I found (like others) that turning the direction to the reverse of the default setting was much easier and more natural. I move my lips to the left to turn the page from the right to left and I move them to the right to turn a page back, as you would do if using your hand.
If the angle of the music desk slopes too far back (as happens on some pianos), turning the iPad upside down places the camera at the bottom of the page and works much better - also in lower light conditions.
These are a few tips I have picked up along the way. I have been using mine for everything for just over a year and have played several recitals with no problems at all. Also, I found I had to experiment with the facial gestures sensitivity settings for sometime so that I wouldn't accidentally turn pages at the wrong time. Now I wouldn't mess up a page turn anymore often than I would mess up a paper page turn. I must experiment with the blink though as I have used the lip movement but have found I don't need to move my lips nearly as much as you were doing in the video.
My iPad is the 2020 model and it works perfectly with forScore. I am told the 2019 model does too so you don’t have to invest in a new 2021 model to do all this.

I’m not sure if you cover it later but I LOVE the link feature which can be used for d.s al segno and repeats and coda’s. It’s one of the best things available for music “road maps”.

A really good explanation of the facilities in ForScore. I am going to upgrade to the pro version so that I can use face gestures to turn the pages. As a saxophonist I shall not be using mouth gestures but I am looking forward to seeing if the wink gesture will work with someone who wears spectacles. Free Scores is good. For more professional score publications, Presto Classical is good.

Blink both eyes won't work - because we need to blink regularly and involuntarily! But instead of wink, you can do a head movement, or a mouth movement.

esiduals due which musicians have to pay to use forscore or similar software for public performances, weddings, funerals, church services, lounge salon bar, mall, cruise ship, or other entertainment venues especially background music?

Double tap the screen when you're in a score horizontally, and the option for two page is right there :)

Hello . . . I have so enjoyed your channel and most especially this video which inspired this retired music teacher to purchase (yesterday) the exact iPad, pencil and ForScore Pro, which you brilliantly demonstrated. Thank you very, very much. I did have a question which I'm hoping there is a work around for. I'm wondering if, in your recovery from "tennis elbow" ( I also suffered from the same injury . . . only rest will do), if you could help me figure this out . . . The problem is: In landscape mode, i.e., two pages/side by side, does it alway show, for example "page 1 and 2" and then on the page turn it shows," page 2 and 3," then, "3 and 4," "4 and 5,' etcetera !!! If they're a work around to show: 1&2. 3&4. 5&6, which seems to make better sense . . . at least to me. If you find the time to respond, I will be forever grateful. Cheers! P.S. ForScore Pro now lists "wink" in the page turn!!
Hello there! Thanks for writing, yes I'm still recovering from my injury and will rest. With the landscpe mode, you can change it to 1-2, 3-4 etc by carefully selecting the pages from the bottom white dot. For instance, to get 1-2, drag the white dot to page 1. Then it will stick with 1-2, 3-4 until you change it

does forscore or similar software help with stop-registration changes? how much do sequencers cost, one time purchase or subscriptions?
It doesn’t aid stop registrations, those are done through your organ / Hauptwerk organ.
Does it look satisfactory if you scanned a novello score and use it in landscape mode? Many publications like Novello are wider than they are high. Also french publications always seem to be taller than anyone else’s. Once reduced to the size of the iPad screen are they still sufficiently legible? Pinching the screen to zoom in wouldn’t be practical while playing.
Hi, landscape mode is a possibility and works well. Generally the scores look legible, but if they feel a bit small, ForScore has a feature that instantly lets you crop all the margins out, which allows the music to get larger on the screen
how much music can be stored? organ, piano, orchestral, choral....? will\do software\hardware updates wipe or delete files?
You’ll never run out of space. You can probably store more than 10000 scores with a 128 GB iPad. Software updates will not delete files, and if you buy a new iPad, you can sync the files over.
Hi, does this have a dual mode, meaning, is it possible to use two I-pads connected and set in a way that two full-sized pages at a time are displayed and turned (face gesture option)?

That's true. A friend of mine recently managed to buy a second-hand iPad for a lot less - so if it's too pricey, it's worth looking second-hand! Also, the slightly older 2020 models can be found cheaper too.
There will Always be a preference for Hard Copies bc you don’t own it if it’s not in your hands. “No man could buy or sell except he had the mark” “you will own nothing and be happy” us older organists enjoy enlarged print photocopies and our treasured books which aren’t in print anymore and never will be available online. Yes, you could digitize every page of your 5 drawer file cabinet full of 800 music books but no one has that kind of time
Hi, I have nearly scanned all of my music library. It's been a gradual process over the past 2 years. I didn't have to scan everything because all music before 1900 is scanned online.
Also, I do own the files, in fact they are more durable than paper because digital files don't degrade. So long as you have a few backups stored on USB sticks, then my entire music library is completely safe.
The best part is, I can take all my music with me wherever I go.
What are the benefits of having a new iPad Pro over having an older one if both of them have a 12.9 screen?
Nothing major. Older ones will indeed be cheaper, especially 2nd hand.
@@peporgan After watching your video I have just bought an older one second hand, upgraded the os to the latest, went for the pro straight away for the face gestures and after navigating eventually to the devices it says device not supported. Maybe this is something to do with OS 15 or maybe it actually doesn't work on the older ones. Will try to contact them to see what they say
Found this video after seeing someone turn pages without touching her iPad. After watching YOUR video, hubby bought this set up for Christmas! The winking was working well for a bit, but now is turning pages quickly for no reason. Turned down sensitivity (every level tested) and it stops working at all. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the comment. I had to adjust the settings for a while until I found a sweet spot. You may want to make sure the lighting of your organ isn't too bright or dark, as this can affect the winking functionality.

You shouldn’t need to scroll if you just use scanned pages

It's an awesome piece of software, but worth pointing out it is NOT available for PC (annoyingly).
That is frustrating. But I presume there are at least alternatives with a similar function?
@@peporgan There are other similar programs but I believe forScore is the only one with the face recognition for page turning. All others will work with a tap and some will allow a foot pedal / trigger of some sort. I'm sure you'll agree that the page turning is probably it's most useful function in terms of performance, which after all is why we buy these things - at least for me anyway.
If anyone out there can correct me I would be most interested.
@@eddieharkin2550 All other things equal, yes the page turning capabilities is what makes ForScore stand apart. PDF File managers have existed for a long time, as have large tablets for sheet music. It's the LIDAR face scanning technology of the iPad Pro that allows ForScore to accomplish this new page turning feat.
Thank you for this game-changer. I have had ForScore on my iPad for years and dabbled on it, but have always thought physical music easier, I just paid the upgrade Pro price and am diligently practicing. Also I plant to upgrade to a 12.9 when the new iPads come out in the Fall. I’ve always resisted the larger size because I like to be able to stick it in my purse. But now I see the importance for music reading.
I have a question about how you write in organ registrations? Is there enough room? Do you use colors for different manuals? Do you wipe out the suggested registrations so you have more room? It wold be nice if there were a little drawer that could pop out for registrations for set up and then these can be accessed later by pushing buttons? Any way you can do a whole program on registrations? I know you have a different organ, but it would be great to get insight into how you notate all the color and feeling changes on your scores.
I struggle with a too-high music rack where my winks and head turns go unnoticed. I just ordered a Peak e device mic holder that I am hoping I can rig lower. Any suggestions along that line?
The last paragraph wasn’t clear. I am getting a Peak E-Device hold that can clamp to a mic stand; I hope it will be able to clamp to the bottom of my music rack and thus bring it down lower. It is on order.
All I can think of is how many people will lose their positions, not to mention businesses, because of this technology. No real metronomes?? I'll keep mine, thanks ! 😘 At what point does "monopoly" come up? Living Composers and Music Publishers should be compensated comparatively through licensing, just as Churches and other venues have to do annually. There is a higher cost than mentioned here.
I'm confused by your comment, Sarah. This technology shouldn't cost any jobs as far as I know, it only serves to replace a few technologies for convenience: paper sheet music is the main target. Advanced metronomes still do much more than this built-in version.
As for composers, publishers and licensing, they are all still compensated. We are legally entitled when purchasing a score to make a digital copy for personal use, and use it with Forscore. We are obligated, if we respect publishers and composers, to not illegally share sheet music digitally. However, for the sake of convenience, publishers should continue to consider selling digital versions of their publications.

But what I want to see is how to turn from one page to another while you are playing. At no time did you talk about this, which is the most important thing.

@@peporgan I think what @danoslehoy means is that you didn't show the page turn during an actual performance playing the organ/keyboard, which would help to better realize about the functionality. Great video though, very useful. Thanks.
just the thought of using a screen annoys me. I’d rather use paper! Some geeks think they’re better than Gutenberg! Call me when the screen is easy on the eyes and bigger than one screen. The pencil is terrible feel too! I just hate technology. Sorry 😢
No problem, it’s not for everyone. But personally, I would never go back to paper- you can’t download, share or backup paper instantly and around the world.
