I’m sure I’m in the minority, but the actual sound - the production/sonics - of the debut is among my favorites ever. Too bad modern metal albums don’t sound this clear, warm, and powerful.
Agree 100%. It took one day to record and it sounds much better than later albums, which sounded flat and muddy with Ozzy's vocals often far too high in the mix.
A good comprehensive overview of this album . A few days after this album was released in February 1970 , a friend of mine called and said : " You have to come over and hear this new album that I just bought ". I went over with a few friends and he started playing it for us , and our first thoughts were , What the heck is this ? The cover itself was unsettling enough , but after hearing that rain storm and the tolling bell , well we had to hear more . I went out and bought it the next day . It's still my favourite Black Sabbath album . And it's still their best album cover . Anyway , after Master of Reality , progressive rock had gotten it's hooks into me , and I went full bore down that rabbit hole . After Master of Reality I kind of checked out on Black Sabbath , other than giving each subsequent album a quick listen . I did like various songs on each of the subsequent albums , but never found the albums to be quite as good overall as the first three were . This album , though is a great one . Thanks !
Thanks John! The first 3 albums are undisputed classics and the first 6 albums with Ozzy are my most listened to. It’s very hit or miss with me after that.
The title alone got this a thumbs up. Never a darling of the critics, best reviews they ever received was when Rick Rubin produced (ironically) their worst album. First heard this at a party when It was released. I was 14 at the time, and it changed my musical direction completely. Up to this point I was an AM Top 40 fan, I had lots of 45's, and the only albums I had were the Beatles. This got me into their 3 heaviest contemporaries (Purple, Heep, and LZ), and I never looked back. You always hear people throw out the line, "this album changed my life." This was it for me. Nice job Jeff! Looking forward to seeing how far you go into their catalog. I would imagine you're doing the initial 8, and then deciding from there?
Thanks Steve! I can imagine the impression this album made back when it was released. It blew me away when I heard it for the first time 20 years later. Yeah I will probably just stick with the Ozzy albums for now. 👍👍
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486The Ozzy albums are the classics, but I gotta say I LOVE the Dio albums too. They are classics in there own rite. Everything after that was.....ehh
The album that created Heavy Metal!!!!!!!!!! The Wizard has become one of my favorite songs. It’s crazy how some releases list alternate names of songs. This is gonna be a killer deep dive, brother!
Same here, it was a shame that they never made more use of Ozzy on harmonica., it would have sounded great playing against the amazing drumming of Bill Ward!
College radio played this whole album straight through and it stopped me in my tracks. I was 14 and this has always been my favorite BS album. Thanks for the retrospective.
Yeah I remember my mind being blown when I first heard the opening track and then the haunting harmonica that opens The Wizard, Holy shit. I never looked back after this album.
The book that Geezer had was a gift from Ozzy, a 15th century grimoire of "black" Magick. Geezer put it in his cupboard. He woke to find a shadowy figure at the foot of his bed. After a moment the figure disappeared. He jumped up, checked the cupboard to find the book missing. That put him off Magick a bit. So it wasn't a book that Geezer bought, it was a gift. And a grimoire at that.
Very excited for these. Great job with your descriptions and footage. I never realized the model wasn’t wearing anything under that cloak. They made the right decision not using suggestive cover because this one is just plain creepy. I love the Wizard! Didn’t know it was about Gandalf. Great job again!
Thanks Gary! The artwork so perfectly captures the mood and darkness of the record. It had to have freaked some unsuspecting record buyers out back in the day. This will be another fun series!
As the opening riff of the title track exploded onto my senses it reminded me of being in that small club back in 1969 with my pint of Newcastle brown and then the feet starting moving and the head followed - great stuff jeff - still their best because it was groundbreaking
I worked in retail some decades ago. I would blast music when we closed, and the title track would absolutely get our jewelry dept concerned for their safety😅☠️👻
Yes🤘🏻🤘🏻 Black Sabbath such an iconic Rock band🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 I use to have 6 or 7 albums back in the 80’s and I only own two CD’s ‘ The Mob Rules’ ‘We Sold our Souls for Rock and Roll’ but no vinyl anymore.. I love your deep dive series Jeff.. I hope all is well.. I put a little something in the mail for, it should arrive either Thursday or Friday.. I hope you like it🤘🏻🤘🏻 Take care.
Very solid and influential album, but things get exponentially better with the next handful of records. The footage you use is always on point! Excited for this deep dive, Jeff.
One of the greatest rock albums just like the first Beatles album and led Zeppelin album made quick and fast made before the drink and drugs took over apparently Ozzy had a heavy cold when recording his vocals
NIB had to do with Bill Ward's beard looked like a pen nib. Also the inverted cross on the inside of the album was not the bands idea. The record company made that decision. The band was surprised when they opened it up. Another fact, Tony was going to give up guitar playing but someone played an album with s guitar player that amazed Tony because the guitar player only had two fingers. Tony made the tips for his fingers partially from a leather jacket of his. He continued using pieces of that leather jacket throughout the years.
Yeah I think the record company tried to play up the Satanic image. The loss of Tony’s fingertips ended up being addition by subtraction. One of the greatest guitarists of all time.
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 So true. My ring finger on my left hand broke. I never went to the hospital. Now it healed wrong so it doesn't bend right. Basically I have to play a different way because of that one finger. I look at it this way; If Tony can do it and a man with only two fingers can do it...I can't complain! Great videos my friend!🤘🏻 Edit: I love the line "addition by subtraction." That's great!
@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486That sucks. Still seems complete. With Sabbath being my all time favorite band, I am all in on this ride! Looking forward to the future episodes!🤘

The production on this record is better than their next two albums in my opinion.

Agreed! This is such a powerhouse of an album.

I just bought a first press of this album & it sounds amazing!
Listen to Ghost. The album Opus Eponymous.

What a masterpiece recorded in 12 hours crazy.
Incredible!
Great heavy rock and roll music 🥁
Hell YES!!! This absolutely would’ve been my vote for your next series. So excited for this!!
It’s going to be epic!
Well hell yes, Black Sabbath the scariest song every made! But N.I.B.is dark, haunting and sinister!
Yes it is!
This will always be my go-to album of theirs, and they never topped that amazing coverart, just an eerie feeling.
It still creeps me out!

A very strong debut album.
Ozzy in optima forma.
Take care.
I love the wizard what am I saying I love this whole album.
Hell yeah!

Great Series Jeff! Thank you. Sorry you got blocked later on but these first LPs are definitely the most important and historic. Thank You!

The sound of rain,in the beginning of the song,Black Sabbath, was actually bacon frying in a pan, true fact!

There is definitely an immediacy to this one that is missing from their post-Master of Reality albums. 👍👍
I know very little about Black Sabbath and have never listened…I’m interested in getting educated….thank you!
Ozzy rules
Bill had a very unique style imo.
Yes he did and I don’t think he gets nearly enough credit for the great work he did on these early Sabbath albums.
Remember when this first came out my girlfriend at the time turned me on to this.

Wasp and basically don’t exist they are parts of either behind the wall of sleep or nib. It only gives those two songs on the album.
