    I was at that game, was 13 at the time. The whole thing was just surreal.
    I was keeping score, and after I jotted down the 3 6 3 double play, I looked up and things were going crazy. After the fight was over, a huge cloud of dust from the infield was just hovering over the playing field for what seemed like forever.
    When Rose took his position in LF, fans out that way were throwing things at him. The Mets sent a contingent of Yogi Berra, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Rusty Staub and maybe Cleon Jones out to LF to plead with the fans to stop. The Mets had a huge lead by that time and the last thing they needed was to forfeit that game.
    What a day that was!
    I was also blessed to attend game 5 of the nlcs as well as game 4 of the world series vs Oakland . Mets won all 3 postseason games i attended.

    I saw an interview done years after the fight and Pete Rose and Joe Morgan both said that they agreed ahead of time that it would be Morgan that would start a fight with Harrelson, but Morgan did not get on base up to that point. They also talked about a regular season game that year where Johnny Bench admitted he intentionally hit Harrelson in the back of the head with a ball as he ran to first. There was lots of ill will between the two teams for each other.

    Rose was short, but compact, powerfully built, and had 40 pounds on Bud, who was a stringbean.
    There was never any doubt of the outcome of that matchup.

(Or 4 percent of their seasons if you prefer percentages) The Reds have won five in 138 years as a franchise. (Or 3.6 percent of their seasons) Neither negates that the disgraced Pete Rose picked a fight with the smallest guy on the team, and it didn't help fire up the Reds. They lost anyway, to a very mediocre team.

Now George Stone had a career year in 1973. He was the game 4 starter against the Reds in the NLCS. Mets' bats also went cold over the last games as well. Who the hell do you think Rose was, Dave Winfield? Rose is a short guy, too, compared to a helluva lot of guys in the league. And Harrelson is a man, so he has to take it like a man. If he was big enough to play the game, he was big enough to take a licking. And both guys are listed at 5' 11". Pete was just a bit stouter. It's not like we're talking Jose Canseco and Rod Carew.

    Matsui is one of the GREATEST hitters of All-Time, and a great all round baseball player. Counting his hits in MLB in Japan+ his stateside hits he clocked out with 3,980 regular season hits. 'GODZILLA' is one of the most under-rated guys to play in the big leaugues EVER because no one in the USA pays attention to the Japanese leagues. The Japanese leagues are just as competitive and the pitchers also throw 95 MPH.

Martin was absolutely the best game time manager as far as I'm concerned. An excellent teacher of fundamental baseball as well. Billy's problem was he just couldn't keep it there. And yep, his move on Jackson in '77 was EXACTLY what he should have done. RIP Billy Martin, beloved by millions.

    For being a" singles hitter with a long career"? WTF!! REALLY??
    I say his 746 doubles 130 triples 160 homeruns proves YOU DONT KNOW SHIT!! Over 1,000 extra base hits must not count... BTW LONGEVITY IS THE RAREST ABILITY IN ANY SPORT, The longer the career the more difficult it becomes to maintain career averages.
    .303 lifetime batting average for a VERY LONG CAREER, and you say everyone on the LIST is BETTER THAN CHARLIE HUSTLE? You should be arrested.lol

    • @wyssmaster
      @wyssmaster 8 років тому

      +Albert Archer Roughly 75% of his hits were singles. If that doesn't make him a "singles hitter" than I have no clue what the fuck does.

    • @albertarcher1839
      @albertarcher1839 8 років тому +1

      +wyssmaster Your right about not having a clue....ROUGHLY 90% of ALL HITS ARE SINGLES. So 75% is 15% BETTER THAN THE AVERAGE....HOWS THAT FOR A CLUE EINSTEIN?

    • @wyssmaster
      @wyssmaster 8 років тому

      Albert Archer
      Hmm, that doesn't sound true. I wonder where you did your research?
      Just last year, there were roughly 14,000 extra base hits in baseball, out of a total ~42,000 hits. That's roughly 1/3 or 33% of all hits in baseball, which would mean that 66% of all hits last year were singles. That's a far cry from 90%!
      baseball-reference has stats going back to the 1870s, going over all of the professional leagues. According to them, there have been a total of 1,049,901 extra base hits over the history of professional baseball, out of a total 3,752,103 base hits. This doesn't account for the way the game has changed since the Dead Ball Era, but since baseball has been played professionally, roughly 28% of all base hits have been extra base hits, meaning that ~72% of all base hits have been singles.
      Now, does this mean that the average hitter hits singles 72% of the time? Of course not! There are plenty of slap-hitters who make their living by inflating their batting averages with loads of singles, and plenty of hitters who couldn't give less of a shit about doing anything but trying to park one in the seats each and every plate appearance. The simple fact, though, is that you literally did no research and just threw some bullshit out to try to disprove me. Job well done!
