- Last week, I looked at the iPaq h2215, a PocketPC from 2003. This week, we're taking a look at some addons for the PocketPC:
-HP Photosmart Mobile Camera
-Pharos iGPS
-Nevo (Remote control software)
Check out my video on the iPaq here:

Believe it or not, SDIO is still used today inside many embedded devices, even some consumer ones. Take low end tablets for instance, it isn't uncommon to see cheap intel android/windows tablets using a Broadcom 802.11abgn Wireless SDIO Adapter of one model or another. Of course such hardware is built into the motherboard and is not user removable. Why? Cost cutting and convenience of implementation.
Mediatek use SDIO to connect the modem to the CPU. I found that out when I was installing Debian on an MT6589 smartphone replacing Android. Still can't get Wi-Fi to work.
Yes, SDIO Wifi+Bluetooth is very common on those cheap Windows Atom tablets.
most Bay Trail-CR Atom tablets/netbooks utilize a Realtek RTL8188CUS-based SDIO board soldered onto the motherboard of these cheap devices... higher-end devices generally have the Broadcom card. and, as one would expect, they come in a few board flavors and generally they're not pin-compatible with each other for exclusivity reasons in manufacturing and design.
This is making me want to add one to a Pi 3 so I have a super spy hacking device that can use old gadgets and outdated technology.

That's a surprisingly good camera. I was expecting a low res, grainy, blurry mess.
And that's what you will get most times. He did get decent shots with optimal lighting and making the thing rest perfectly still.
@@BilisNegra But just the fact it is capable of taking decent photos, this was the best mobile camera still long after it came out.
I mean hp camera were amazing back in the day
It is 1.3 MP. If you tried to enlarge the photo you might eventually see the picture becoming grainy. That is the same with better cameras too but much less likely to happen.
=D
"or you can flip it around and take them like this", I just love you 😂
Jeez at least wait until the 2nd date to confess
Mazen Fire, that was just great.
Hah gayyyyyyyyy
Avoiding face reveal?
I like the use of the fidget spinner to show the frames per second.
Claudio Bizama it finally has a non-autistic use
Disgusting Drew stop using it as a insult
Recording a recent fad with a decade old digital camera feels like listening to modern pop music on vinyl, at least for me.
I would love to record gaming on this piece of garbage oh wait my laptop can run GTA 4 with a higher frame rate then this garbage can record heck even hypercam can record at a higher frame rate then this garbage the only way this would be useful is time lapse
Disgusting Drew HEY!
That video of the cat was super aesthetic
The shots are actually impressive for its time. I was expecting worse but it turned out to be good. Heck, even it can be used for profile photos or Instagram shots.
How about you explain your prof pic huh?
jo si ya jo si ya don’t worry about it
jo si ya jo si ya it's hot
I have a feeling 144/240p 10-15fps is gonna be the hipster aesthetic in the next few years, now that the polaroid/super8 craze is dying out.
I had a higher end iPaq back in the day (I still have it somewhere). I had the hard case, an external battery case w/PCMCIA slot, a car windshield mount, & other stuff. I used it for email & office documents, war driving w/a Pringles cantenna, & as an OBD2 scanner to read/reset check engine codes in cars! It was very modular, & way ahead of it's time!
That joke about flipping the camera around was hilarious. Have a like.
Lol, No face reveal yet.
Isaacfess maybe in the 100K subscribers special.
Not nearly enough.
I fucking died laughing
1:27 I like that joke. If it's supposed to be one.
Lol it is. I cant tell if the shakiness is faked. If not he should try some marijuana.
It's not himself. He invited Michael J. Fox to try out the iPaq
haha! just got that.
Took the comment right out of my hands. I hoped he was joking, but it was hard to tell
I'm glad someone else saw that as a joke cuz I found it funny but unsure
2:26 "a jittery hand"
That's not just jittery, that's Parkinson's
That's not something to joke about, imo.
Georg anything can be joked about
I choked
nah, it's actually sped up
@@SuperAdnan117 calm down mate
I like how it shows 4x Digital zoom like it's something special
back in the very early days of mobile computers in general (be it laptop, Palmtop or handheld) Compact Flash cards with extra I/O was pretty common, in addition to the GPS ones there were modems, ethernet, Wifi, wireless modems (cellular) and stuff like barcode scanners. Very versatile for the time
With the advancement of USB Type-C we will never see these kind of cards anymore.
But it's fun to now that people once use SD card slot for peripherals
Ardimo Harsa you think that's funny? People used to put picture CDs and Floppy disks into cameras.
USB C? Normal USB A and OTG can provide functionality like this
I think they even were able to use mini usb to use addons like the otg stuff.
My pocket pc takes CF cards as add-ons. I have a wifi cf card
zappy bear not to mention zip disks also... (I think?)
"Dad, why is my sister named Rose"
"Beacause your mom loves roses"
"Thanks dad"
"You're welcome, HP Photosmart Mobile Camera"
They had us in the first half
I don’t understand this joke
@@harshvithlani9399 it's because I really really like this object
jeremy aster I don’t understand
@@harshvithlani9399 the dad loves the HP Photosmart Mobile Camera so by that same logic of his wife naming his daughter rose because she loves roses, he named his son HP Photosmart Mobile Camera because he loves HP Photosmart Mobile Cameras.
Even some really old cameras take good photos. Provided you take 5 mintues to take the shot. New cameras are just so much faster that even if the picture quality isn't that different, ease of use wins every time.

I _REALLY_ want to see this set of adapters closed in.
I require footage of a finger pushing that microSD card into that mini SD card into that SD-CF Adapter into that CompactFlash adapter into that slot.
Me too.
Yup, nowdays you need a dongle to plug your headphones into your iPhone :P
The pictures that come from it are good by today's standards.
Sharp Games Official I think “acceptable” is a better adjective here?
They are not bad that some can be actually used as profile images or something simple. The problem was it is so easy to get blurry shots which can result to unusable photos.
He had to work to get those. I used to have both the ipaq and the camera. Nevo was awesome. I used to program it for tvs and dvd players at friend's houses
Sharp Games Official heck it even looks better than my phone's camera
Definitely better than the early iPhones up until the 3GS in 2009. By today's standards though, most entry-level smartphones will take better photos.
Some of those pictures actually look quite good XD
We need more modular devices in 2018 they're so cool and have so much wasted potential
Pharos means lighthouse in Greek. I guess that’s a cool name for a GPS.
I guess that explains why it's called the "Lighthouse of the 21st Century" on the box.
In Italian lighthouse means "Faro" 💡
No, Z, I think you meant that it _IS_ Greek, and means "lighthouse" in *English.*
In spanish means "faro"
Meanwhile folks still think I'm a freaking wizard when I use my modern smartphone to turn the TV on or adjust the volume.
It's sad that they stopped putting remotes into phones. The only place you'll see an IR blaster on a modern smartphone is in the Chinese market
Edit: I didn't realize just how old this comment was until I replied to it.. I'm surprised nobody else replied
@@aidancommenting Exactly why I love living in Canada. Can still get all the Huawei and ZTE phones I want, haha.
@@ulogy My only problem with Huawei is they can't use Google services anymore, so you'd have to look for an older phone unless you're buying it just for the IR blaster. I wish they'd kept them though, it'd make a really cool feature in phones that are actually updated nowadays
@@aidancommenting All you need to do is sideload the Google Play apps.

arigatou!
Thanks. I can't read kanji that well so I didn't get the last one
This video was refreshing. I was transported to simpler times for a few minutes. Coming bacc to reality doesn't feel so good but I feel better overall.
There are many channels that I watch and never sub to, but this video (first one I've ever seen on your channel) was so calm, informative, and entertaining (the camera flip gag got a chuckle out of me) that I just had to hit that button. I hope your channel keeps growing! Keep up the awesome content :3
They're surprisingly good shots. I'm amazed.
10/10 for avoiding selfie joke
Damn, i need to travell back in time and give a ipaq to me.. I really missed a whole universe of things by not having such device in that time....
At school we got to take home a Palm One Zire 31. It was the pinacle of "Technology in Schools". It could play solitaire and it was a challenge to see how many songs you could fit on the 64MB SD card
Rennie Ash But did it had a expandable memory to maybe 512megs? It would be a good deal.
Did they gave those for you or it was schools property?
The closest to that was a dumb phone i've got around 2007/2008 that could acess mobile internet, i used it to make write annotations using the sms app, using the old numeric keyboard.
I am seriouslly thinking in getting a gpd to br like a pda-ish device, but with usb and x86 processor.
Eduardo Avila it probably did have capacity for bigger SD cards, but they only gave us a small memory one. And no, we had to return them at the end of the year. I then didn't get a mobile device until 2 years later, but that was my own. Having not grown up with as free access to tech and internet as people do now or even as others have had, I've basically been slowly learning about stuff at a later age. But, it's been enough I guess. Just I'm not some child prodigy ;=)
You got my like and sub with that Lion King joke xD
I amazed at the quality of those photos.
I remember those SDIO Bluetooth back in early 2000's. Back in the day, Bluetooth was very uncommon and I remember to use the infrared on my Palm m100, m125, computer (USB adapter for the win) and some cellphones with 0.3MP cameras. :)
Cool video, I had the camera with the ipaq I got from my dad! Seems useless today but back then... man it was so much better than film and developing. Thanks for the nostalgia!
Reminds me of the memory stick to floppy adapter for the mavica
Literally no one:
Camera makers: Lets just completely screw sd cards and just make them into damn cameras.
I had a 2xPCMCIA jacket for my iPAQ that allowed me to connect to WiFi and have a CF card in the second slot, was very useful but extremely bulky by today's standards. Had the IR port as well, which I used for printing.
Very great and interesting video! Also, the music at the end is so relaxing. Take care.
Your videos are one of the only things I enjoy seeing on youtube
This would be a good gift to a nostalgic friend
this is super cool! i can see people wanting to buy these for the nostalgia. people seem to do that a lot now, between original polaroids (when they could just buy a fujifilm for much cheaper and better quality) or even VCRs.
Had several pocket pc and this hp cam to that time. Thank you for the videos. It's a wouderfull memories to the time where the world was for me ok.
Now imagine these things came back, running Windows 10 or Linux... *THAT* would be awesome IMO
Sithhy so damn true :D
Windows phone....
Ninja1inblack has a point, Windows Phone runs Windows 10 and Android is built on Linux, you can even access the built in shell with an app and root.
That has already happend. See www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-world-s-most-powerful-pocket-sized-pc#/
@Adrians Augustovskis
That looks kool!
I know it's asking for too much, but If they can just squeeze a portable projector into that thing, i would be amazed!
that cat was so cute
I wish PDA's would make a come back. I used to love those back in the days.
The alternative path to an all screen bezel free phone.
This is the kind of contect that I like. Keep it up!🙋🏿
Holy crap, that was the first ever "smartphone" I touched, I was 8/9 years old. Just got a flashback, thanks to you !
Pretty cool that the satellites are still up and working for this archaic GPS.
you have excellent taste in music
potato potato potato potato potato potato potato beautiful 😁
Optyx calm the fuck down
Wow, those pictures look amazing done right.
Holy cow I completely forgot about these cameras. I had one for a Dell Axim (x51 I think)! The card wasn't HP branded, I'm not sure what it was, but it looked almost exactly the same!
Wow so this is what the iPhone 6 selfie camera was competing with
Thanks for this recommendation from youtube, otherwise i will never knew that this types of products existed in my early age.
its crazy how fast things change.
This video just has so many jokes you completely deadpan through. I love it.
Throwback in 2005 my first mobile phone was used Motorola MPX200 and it has SDIO camera..not so practical but it was nice to be unique back then..
I remember using a Dell Axim x51v when waiting tables as a small tablet to write orders on without going through a ton of paper, and later at a different job as an ebook reader and NES emulator.
This channel is so underrated
I have 3 of those ipaqs, those are really cool.
In the early 2Ks I had a Palm device that slipped inti a Magellan gps back plate.
1:27 LMAO
I thought we would finally see his face lol
Good, I wasn't the only person to find that hilarious
Alejandro Ferrari maybe he will show his face in the 100k subscribers video.
why did the algorithm push this to meeee? seems like this video got picked up and probably will go viral compared to your last videos. Good job on getting noticed by the all mighty youtube algorithm.
Its like modular design
no
yes
Really impressed by the image quality of this "SD camera".
This camera is really impressive for the time
Holy shit, I actually had one of those pharos GPS modules my father won in a meeting when I was a kid. I'll never forget how amazed I was when I saw the streets on the screen that we were driving by out the window
Oh man I remember having a similar setup for my Palm, kinda miss it.
the images it took are pretty solid
Oh I remember those, I really wanted a SDIO WiFi adapter for my htc but they were really expensive back then :(
Those are great pictures!
To be fair, with expandability today, many expansions can be made with USB OTG. If one considers all the internal expansion in phones like the Librem 5, one could have a phone that could be even more expandable than this one.
I remember seeing this on a catalog.
That pic quality is DOPE
I used my 2215 as a remote control for everything as it has built in NEVO software
The galaxy note 4 also had the universal remote thing and it's pretty cool
I went crazy, when a friend of my showed up with his Motorola phone and a SD card camera...a phone with a camera, incredible :D
Always wanted one of these for my Dell Axim X50 :D
Was very shocked at how good those photos came out.
Given they're hard as hell to take, but still.
7:31 I had a Handspring Visor in the late 90's. I had a universal remote expansion module for it.
That is absolutely amazing quality for the time and size. Probably a lot of that is the non fixed-focus lens?
That camera is crazy good considering when it was made.
I just have to say, your cat is adorable.
God. I remember my Dad's Dopod which is similar to that ipaq. As far as I know it is still working
Shows that a 2003 ipac add on camera is as good as some smart phones of much later! I got one from a boot sale boxed for £5 to mess with ages ago. It was cool.
those are actually some nice pictures.
Nice review on tech history
It would of been great to have on of these in early 2000s!
i always hoped someone would build a external camera for cellphones..and now i'm seeing something like this already exists??
I miss the PDA days. I jumped in the deep end. Palm Pilots, handspring Visors, Sony Clies and even an Ipaq or 2.
Great video, thank you for this research!
Oh my Jesus, I need this.
The pics of these camera is really god
I'm just watching this to get it off of my UA-cam recommendations
It costs 130$? ... 1.3MP ...
omg the ipaq is so pretty
If memory serves me correctly you can still find CF and full length PCMCIA Types 1-4 at places like Fry's Electronics.
I was a sophomore that year, had an iPaq 3830, loved messing with teachers by turning tvs and vcrs on and whatnot.
Well dang. That's a nice camera
This thing takes better pictures than my LG phone from 2015
This kind of stuff is very interesting...
Also the CDs containing the map must be very advanced to span 4 CDs
Surprisingly good photo quality for the time. Must've cost a fortune way back when
when I saw this at first I thought this was a camera that was about the size of an SD card, now I want to make that a thing
My child hood was awesome with the pocket PC 🙂
You should give that thing to Clint, he needs one of those camera things
Awsome video , i never knew of sd io.
