Page 40 of Charles Dicken’s, Penguin Classics, “A Christmas Carol”, “God bless you merry gentleman! May nothing you dismay!
Dickens changes “let” to “may” for the first time in a long time since the carol was popularised because “let” implied predetermination which in all reality is a bit of a grim notion to include in a book about poverty, whereas “may” implies some sort of hope. This was, I think, a bit of a change in the Victorian attitude but also Dickens himself pushes back against predetermination in life and rather seeks to suggest that there should be, in England and the UK at large, the possibility of class mobility not only from Middle Class to Upper Middle, but also from the lowest sections of society upwards.

You can feel the spirit of the centuries in this choir and this piece. The connection with times past brings goosebumps. And it is a reminder to all of us that, no matter how bad things may seem at the moment, many of our ancestors lived more difficult lives, endured greater suffering, but humanity survived. Peace and love to all at Christmas.

      God rest ye merry, gentlemen
      Let nothing you dismay
      for Jesus Christ our Saviour
      Was born upon this day
To save us all from Satan's power
      When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
      Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy.
      From God our Heavenly Father
      A blessed Angel came;
      And unto certain Shepherds
      Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
      Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy.
      The shepherds at those tidings
      Rejoiced much in mind,
      And left their flocks a-feeding
      In tempest, storm and wind:
      And went to Bethlehem straightway
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
      Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy.
And when they came to Bethlehem
      Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found Him in a manger,
      Where oxen feed on hay;
      His Mother Mary kneeling
      down,Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
      Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy.
Now to the Lord sing praises,
      All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
      Each other now embrace;
      This holy tide of Christmas
      All other doth deface.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
      Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy.

Is it still religion? To worship its creator is not to play beautiful music, it is to manifest true acts of faith on a daily basis. This music is pleasant to listen to, very pleasant even, but it does not bring me closer to God. It's just a good time for me. God is above that it seems to me. I find it deplorable that this religion claims to reproach the Men of God when this is not the case, it is just our human passions dressed in an alleged faith in God. I say this because our Christian world is intrinsically selfish

Jesus was not a prophet. Regardless of your anger of what I am to say, Jesus as God Almighty loves you. Come to Him as He calls out to His children, in an age where many deny the divinity of Christ. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me- Jesus. If you reject this message, I will be on my way. God bless, I pray humbly that you will come to Jesus because he died for the sins of men and women alike. I say this out of the love Jesus tells Christians to have.

@@eternalbyzantium262 Hihi why would I be angry 😁 I am familiar about the status of Jesus, peace be upon him, within Christian tradion and I really respect that. Within islamic tradition, Jesus was a prophet, just like Abraham, Mozes and Mohamed peace be upon them all. They follow the same line in monothisme and had one message and that was: spreading the word of God. Mary was a honarable woman, there is a whole chapter named after her in the Quran. We don’t believe that the only way to God is through Jesus, he was just the messenger of God (for the people of Israel in Jesus case), just like the messengers before him, but we do believe that he could bring the dead back to life and he could cure the blind and that he will come back to earth to rule.
I actually didn’t came here to discuss which religion is the truth, I really love this song and the way Jesus and Mary are honered. 😌❤️

Obviously there are certain words and phrasings that are no longer in common use, even the language used in this piece sound extremely dated. Nevertheless people would’ve spoken vs similar English as you and I at the time this was written.

Even if not for that song, an organ in general is just so powerful. My school always had the Christmas concerts in an old church in my hometown and one of our music teachers knew how to play the organ.
There is no instrument as powerful as the organ, especially when more registers are being pulled.
The air vibrates and it honestly just felt the church that stood there for some 700 years started to shake.
If you ever get the chance to hear the organ being played properly, take it, there is nothing like it.

Fullproof atheist here but that's neither here nor there. This is for me about as high up there as it gets for comfort, warmth, togetherness. Absolute bliss. Tears to my eyes (and ears) each time I hear it, and certainly this wonderful recording.

This is also one of my favourite carols. The arrangement and conducting by Stephen
Cleobury gives this traditional carol such a beautiful richness. I particularly like the ah soprano harmony. I also think that the singing of the congregation blending with the angelic voices of the choir bleands and creates a more dynamic outcome.

This song embodies what is good about Christmas and the festive season, whether or not you are religious this lifts your spirits and takes you back to a time when all was well in your life growing up then having your own children and seeing them happy.

  • @theferrones

This is near the top of my favorites. The meaning of the lyrics and of course the song itself. Right up there with o holy night. Which resonates with Christmas. Unfortunately it’s a victim of its own success. Overplayed but still it’s overplayed for a reason. Favorite version is by Celtic Women. The beauty of these songs is the fact that God between old and New Testament had nothing to say for 400 years and then Jesus was born and there was a light in the darkness. And it was good. Probably represented by all the lights at Christmas time. Even if people aren’t aware.

The tenors at 2:48-3:09 Took this hands down! l always thought it was soprano hitting the highest notes on this song but seeing it perform live and showcasing that particular part in the song l had no idea is little boys that are youngest in the chour highest keys! ALL sound awesome! l sang tenor but couldn't hit these boys key even when 12 13. Superb!

Just so you know, that part of the song is known as the descant. It's a line that would typically be sung by the 1st sopranos in a choir, however the king's choir uses trebles (which are young boys who haven't hit puberty) to sing the female lines.

    God rest ye merry, gentlemen
    Let nothing you dismay
    Remember, Christ, our Saviour
    Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
    When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
    In Bethlehem, in Israel,
    This blessed Babe was born
    And laid within a manger
    Upon this blessed morn
    The which His Mother Mary
    Did nothing take in scorn
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
    From God our Heavenly Father
    A blessed Angel came;
    And unto certain Shepherds
    Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
"Fear not then," said the Angel,
    "Let nothing you affright,
This day is born a Saviour
    Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
    From Satan's power and might."
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
    The shepherds at those tidings
    Rejoiced much in mind,
    And left their flocks a-feeding
    In tempest, storm and wind:
    And went to Bethlehem straightway
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
And when they came to Bethlehem
    Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found Him in a manger,
    Where oxen feed on hay;
    His Mother Mary kneeling down,
    Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
Now to the Lord sing praises,
    All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
    Each other now embrace;
    This holy tide of Christmas
    All other doth deface.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
    Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
