Revisiting this game AFTER playing Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4... It's freaky how Spider-Man 2 feels like a prototype... I mean, it's completely ahead of its time.
Just watched an interview with the original creator of the swinging mechanics from spider Man 2. They had him play the PS4 Spiderman. It's very clear that it was a love letter to 2 In regards to the swinging etc.
+ChippyGaming Absolutely! The rest of the game can be as good, bad or mediocre as you want, the swinging was all worth it. I haven't played the game in years, and i still know the layout of the map like the back of my hand, heh.
I remember having no memory card for the game cube so I would beat this game every afternoon, and sometimes I would leave the game cube running while i slept then wake up and swing through the city before beating it...good times, good times. Who remembers taking a thug all the way to the top of the empire state building and just either throwing them off or pile drive them all the way to the ground lol the rag doll physics were crazy. Like if you've done this.
What i used to do was bring a thug to the top and perform some punches on him in the air and kick myself up using his body to get higher in the air, use the web to pull him back and repeat the process until i am higher in the air than the game intended which caused a cool glitch where if the map normally shows you an overhead view of the city it would now show you a view of the sky on the map screen instead, because you propelled yourself up higher than the map camera so the camera turns up to the sky because you are above it.
+That One Video Gamer Inside the universe... Black Cat, She-hulk or Captain Marvel. Outside the marvel universe... I don't know... I wouldn't choose Megan Fox either... but I'm not against her...
This is still one of my favorite games. Allow me to share a story from one time when I was playing: I'd triggered an NPC mission to stop a robbery, so I went after the guys and pounded them. They took off in their getaway car. As I was chasing them, I hear the cry of a child who'd let go of their dear balloon. Turning back, I went after the balloon, snatched it out of the air, then doubled back and chased down the fleeing car. I then pounded the car until the crooks stopped and beat them up after they exited the vehicle, all with a balloon clutched in my hand. And I still managed to get the balloon back to the child. ... one of my prouder moments, I'm not ashamed to admit.
+The Satellite I definitely remember something like that happening to me... All the while delivering pizza. You've never tasted awkwardness until you beat thugs to a pulp with that music playing...

+Nuggetmaster1000 Yeah man. Spider-Man 2's swinging was way better and it had the purchasable upgrades. I love Ultimate Spider-Man, but Spidey's gameplay was friggin boring. Half the time I'd play as Venom and just cause havoc across the city.
Wow, I'm so sorry. I borrowed the PC version as a child from a class mate, I thought it was pretty fun, especially the fight with Mysterio. I lended him my PS2 copy of the game. But I might've just enjoyed the PC version because everything Spider-Man was the best in my eyes. Used to play the shit out of the first Spider-Man -movie-game too. Fun stuff!
This review was in 2016 and the comment about the web-swinging at 9:26 HAS been recreateted now in insomniac Spider-Man game in 2018 so it is a dream come true.
And in Spider-Man 3 for PC, Ps3 and Xbox 360 too. Really... that game has a great web-swinging, it's really great to beat the game and still keep fighting crime through the city while you explore it.
Not exactly "recreated"... you had to alternate between left and right triggers for webswinging and could actually loop round a crane or flagpole which could act as a great catapult, in 2018 version you only need use the right trigger and the swing automatically lets go once you reach a certain height during a swing so no looping things. There's a good few other differences and refinements, and I love it regardless. New Spider-Man webswinging is actually a lot closer to Amazing Spider-Man 2 game than the one featured in this video.... it even borrow many of Spidey's after-swing acrobatics from that very movie too.
I know I'm late to the party but... Thank you. Thank you for this. I always wondered what would happen if you got all the tokens. I mean, I'd forgotten about it for well over a decade, but seeing you actually get all of them?? It truly fulfilled me in a way that I didn't know was possible. I don't care if that sounds weird. I hope you mean the challenges he put you through because I remember back when I was playing through it the first time and I had some real trouble beating his challenges and I faced one in a theater and I barely beat it and only a sliver of health left when I was trying to find something easy to get my health back when I ran into him trying to rob a small store and all these health bars popped up and I was like oh no so as soon as the let me control my character I rushed in trying to attack him hit him 1 time and his health went all the way to zero his helmet came off and the fight was over easiest boss fight in history.
2 year old video I know, just felt like tossing this out there. Definitely agree with the 'play it' rating. I do feel that, quite frankly, the game isn't DESIGNED to be 'completed', and having no reward for it was likely an intentional choice. The game is at it's best (post-story) when you are fucking around, enjoying the swinging and combat, and taking on the random missions. I feel that the sheer amount of tokens exist solely so that, as you do these additional small play sessions, you still have things to discover and find. The races are a bit too brutal, I agree. But as you start to get better and better at the game's mechanics, it also means you are getting better and better at the traversal itself. 99% of moving in this game is just swinging and zips, sure, but sometimes you do pull of those stunts, just traversing. Basically, I can easily see why completing this game 100% would put a bit of a damper on the enjoyment one would get out of it. Thankfully, the lack of a 100% reward means that there is significantly less pressure for your average player to DO that grindy, repetitive and soulcrushing task, and they can freely swing about enjoying their time without worrying about "getting that one reward".
I like to think of Infamous: Second Son as a spiritual successor to this game. It's got those same wonderful moments of zipping around the city at top speed, tons of combat options, and lots and lots of random thugs to beat up so you can prove to people that you're the hero their city needs.
This was my summer game when I was a kid. It was the only game from Blockbuster that we rented more than once. Years later, I found it at a retro game store and I've had it since.
The Mysterio boss fight was most memorable to me. I remember walking into his boss fight and seeing his MASSIVE hp bar. At that moment I got horrible flashbacks of the OVERPOWERED Mysterio boss fight from the 90s game and I'm like fml. But then I hit him and I could breath again :)
Definitely the most important thing for me in a spider-man game is the web swinging. But, the thing that makes me feel like I am really playing a spider-man game is when you are swinging through the city and you hear a cry for help so you groan and have to turn 180 and go save someone way out or your way. That sounds like a true spider-man experience.
I doubt he'll be doing it any time soon, though I do think's it's safe to assume he's doing some work on it on the side. To be honest, though, as someone who's actually tried to 100% that game, I kinda hope he doesn't. The man does enough hard to complete games on here as it is, and I can't imagine what kind of insanity he'd put himself through if he tried to complete The Wonderful 101.
This game was the best superhero game back then, but it doesn't really hold up today now that we got the big boys like Batman Arkham Knight and Spiderman PS4
This game deserves all the praise it deserves but that Ps1 Spider-Man is still my favorite game and story. Spidey Ps4 did great recreating the swinging!
Loved this game! Have so much nostalgia from watching the review and I'm sure not all of it is purely just that as I'd play the game all over again. And great vid, Jirard! That bit with the butler that went throughout was actually pretty funny; with that I ended up having a chuckle or two. Take care! :D
In my opinion this is one of your guy's funniest videos! I played this game almost to completion around 07 to 08. I like how you described the races being so difficult because for me, at 13 or 14 they were impossible! Even with a basically fully upgraded spidey.
Oooooh right I forgot about the venom parts of the games! Soo gritty. Like, there is no sarcasm is being shared here, you murder a child at the tutorial of venom.
Great game but I prefer Ultimate Spiderman as it had Venom who was playable, A better storyline, the Graphics have aged much better with its cell shaded style, and I think they made the gameplay better as i required less lame padding to continue and Spiderman feels more versatile in terms of Gameplay. Also that final level was much better as that switch bullshit took forever.
Hmmm, if I were Spiderman..........Raven from Teen Titans. Why? Cause fuck it I want Raven from Teen Titans! Fuck it! Fuck Mary Jane, fuck Black Cat, fuck Beast Boy, fuck Twilight Sparkle, fuck Power Levels, fuck Super Saiyans AND FUCK YOU CELL! Wait....
rsheed123 Well so is Twilight Sparkle but that ain't stopping the Derpibooru Crowds from making humanized versions of her just to ship her with Peter Parker.....
The swinging mechanic from this game is the best. And it really is a complete embarrassment that other attempts have failed to even do it the same way.
You know... you missed something... Hint tokens! They're just things you can activate that give you "Hints" from Bruce Campbell, and about 50 points. I don't think there's a reason to touch all of THEM, but the humor from Bruce Campbell is worth hunting every single one down!
I remember the hype for this game. On the consoles, this was one of the first Open-World titles. It was actually the first time I'd ever heard of. It was also the first game I saw advertised for the Nintendo DS. Needless to say, this game holds a lot of firsts
I remember playing this constantly as a kid, staying up all night on the weekends and playing it until my PS2 was hot as the sun. I wanted to be Spidey so much in that game, and tell MJ to fuck off and just go on fun adventures with Black Cat every night. Also finding gang members fighting on top of skyscrapers (for some reason) and just gingerly webbing and tossing them off the roof to their deaths and getting called "heroic" for it. Soooooo good.
I’ll be honest, this game doesn’t hold up at all and the first Spider-Man game holds up so much better. Just play through everything involving Mysterio in the second game and tell me it’s designed well. I’d take traversing the sewers in the first movie game any day.
I very much agree. Chauvinism means thinking men are better than women. Peter's not like that and I don't see how him choosing not to be with her with chauvinistic.
As a kid, the swinging physics and open world was the first time i felt like a spiderman in a videogame. Spider-Man ps4 brought the physics back, thankfully. Spiderman ps4 is what I felt like playing ps2 spiderman 2 all those years ago as a 9 year old
this is still the best spider-man GAME. its so complete. lively newyork,day/night cycle, fun combat, smooth ass web-swinging,memorable quest, dynamic random crimes/task. man.. 2 years ago i thought we gonna get something like this in marvel's spider-man instead we got a shallow city with cool web-swinging mechanic. sad and disappointed.
It has a good story and 4 diffrent endings. It might repeat itself a bit, but it's still a must play if you're a Spider-Man fan, especially if you're a Symbiote/Venom fan.
Fun Fact: The Lizard was going to have a storyline in this game with Calypso as part of it but the storyline was scrapped for reasons unknown (time I suppose) BUT while the storyline was scrapped ASSETS of that storyline were used for the Boss Arena you unlock after beating the story such as Calypso being in Boss Mode and Lizardmen being in the normal and endurance rounds. This storyline would eventually be used for Spider-Man 3: The Game.
ONLY 97 FAILED RACE ATTEMPTS! I've gotten way way way more than that and I haven't even finished every race (those ones in the park are impossible). Mad respect bro. This is one of my top ten favorite games but I doubt I'll ever fully complete it cause some of those races combined with those secret tokens is just too much.

But then I hit him and I could breath again :)
lmfao, that ending
I think this game really did break you, Jirard
If I were Spider-Man I would date Black Cat. I mean why wouldn't you.
"The original Spider-man 2"
PS1 spider-man 2 says hi
He was talking about the movie
@@mar_speedman don't ruin the joke.
@@SaraBlade Uhhhhh....
Too late now, I guess :P
@@mar_speedman well then you leave me with no choice..... *does absolutely nothing*
@@mar_speedman delete that shit
My parents found a PS2 copy in a pawn shop and bought it. It was my favourite game in my collection for a while.
I'm hearing wonderful 101 music. by the end of this month, you better play that game if you're going to bring up the music man. the hype demands it.
Also one more thing... FUCKIN AZUNA DROPS!
+Josh d (Drush) what the music he plays when he show the azuna drop??
It's Molina...
This game! This game was my childhood!
This game was the best superhero game back then, but it doesn't really hold up today now that we got the big boys like Batman Arkham Knight and Spiderman PS4
💯. So many that have nostalgia glasses on and won't take them off
This game deserves all the praise it deserves but that Ps1 Spider-Man is still my favorite game and story.
Take care! :D
Have you tried Ultimate Spider-Man yet
I really hope he completes that game at some point.Johnny storm, that's all I'm gonna say
dat ff9 music on the background at 3:00
In my opinion this is one of your guy's funniest videos! I played this game almost to completion around 07 to 08. I like how you described the races being so difficult because for me, at 13 or 14 they were impossible! Even with a basically fully upgraded spidey.
Spider Man 2 was a game I spent hours upon hours playing in high school. Just a fun game.
Spiderman 1- 2002
Spiderman 2- 2004
Spiderman 3- 2007
Amazing spiderman 1-2012
Amazing spiderman 2- 2014
Spiderman homecoming- 2017
Spider-Man 2 released 2 years after spiderman 1, sm 3 released 3 years after am 2
PLEASE DO AN ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASEEEEEE!!!!!
I prefered Ultimate Spiderman...you got to fight Wolverine for fuck's sake
Oooooh right I forgot about the venom parts of the games! Soo gritty. Like, there is no sarcasm is being shared here, you murder a child at the tutorial of venom.
+Chulump Gehring Even better, the kid you kill is the one that loses their balloon in Spider-Man 2.
Chulump Gehring When i was a kid, playing that game,i thought just like Spiderman was bitten by a Spider,Venom was bitten by a cockroach
+Cursedwind You can do the same thing in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. While playing as Spider-Man vs Wolverine as opposed to Venom vs Wolverine.
***** I was unlucky enough to play the PS2 Web of Shadows....
This was my FAVORITE game as a little kid. I still remember those fond memories.
For the final question, Black Cat. Not even a debate. She's a badass and hot as fuck.
That's going to be a new meme, i know it!
The meme that pierced his body, came from this episode.
when are you completing Xenoblade?
+John J Theres A LOT of stuff to do in that game
+John J He's doing it on Twitch.
+John J Slowly but surely on twitch. Check the fb page or twitter to know when we post about streaming
+That One Video Gamer awesome. Thanks for replying btw :D
+John J At this rate, probably never :S
Do Ultimate Spider-Man next!
Waits until 2018 when Spider-Man PS4 comes out and then the swinging is perfect
💯
I cannot tell you all the memories I have of this game. Probably remains my favorite video game Spidey experience. That includes Spider-Man ps4.
Great game but I prefer Ultimate Spiderman as it had Venom who was playable, A better storyline, the Graphics have aged much better with its cell shaded style, and I think they made the gameplay better as i required less lame padding to continue and Spiderman feels more versatile in terms of Gameplay. Also that final level was much better as that switch bullshit took forever.
antman1001000 well what helped the graphics was the fact they completely nailed the look of the Brian Michael Bendis Comics
Ahhh, Grand Theft Spider-Man.
Wait....
Dude....calm down
Flame of Udun 'Kay
+Terry Jones Someone is a fan of Team Four Star then eh? Haha :P
But but but
Raven and Spider-Man are in different universes
rsheed123 Well so is Twilight Sparkle but that ain't stopping the Derpibooru Crowds from making humanized versions of her just to ship her with Peter Parker.....
That meltdown at the end though. Hilarious
That jab at the amazing spider series is the best line in this video
Jirard you should do Spider-Man 3 both versions (PS3,360 and ps2) and web of shadows for 360,PS3 and wii
TheIcenero the ps2 version is superior so he should only do that one
@@bingbong6928 hell fucking no
So, who else remembers playing this on their PS2?
Crazy to think it came out 16 years ago. It really took this long for someone to make a Spider-Man game better than this one
GameCube buddy.
Original Xbox for me
0:28 I've seen enough hentai to know where *this* is going
The swinging mechanic from this game is the best. And it really is a complete embarrassment that other attempts have failed to even do it the same way.
You know... you missed something... Hint tokens! They're just things you can activate that give you "Hints" from Bruce Campbell, and about 50 points.
I don't think there's a reason to touch all of THEM, but the humor from Bruce Campbell is worth hunting every single one down!
complete Superman 64! I dare you.
Jakiro 666 he did..
Review Ultimate Spider-Man
well its time for a new spiderman experience and i hope spiderman ps4 can do that
I remember the hype for this game.
Review had me cracking up. Subscribed.
Please play Ori and The Blind Forest
*laughs in 2018*
I’ll be honest, this game doesn’t hold up at all and the first Spider-Man game holds up so much better. Just play through everything involving Mysterio in the second game and tell me it’s designed well. I’d take traversing the sewers in the first movie game any day.
THANK YOU! So many people with nostalgia glasses that refuse to take them off. Keep seeing people say the PS4 game doesn't compare which is silly
The best thing about this first batch of Spiderman games was hands down Bruce Campbell's narration.
So...When's that never gonna happen Spider-man one review?
Don't try to be funny. You're not good at it.
Okay. I take it back. Some of this made me laugh. Carry on.
¿Por que?
+Roberta Tallienne cala a boca
What? Boca is mouth, right? Yeah, I'm not exactly fluent.
Roberta Tallienne so dont try
The words "feminism" and "feminist" look and sound similar to "effeminate", "female", and "feminine". That said... Chauvinism? Doesn't seem like it.
I very much agree. Chauvinism means thinking men are better than women. Peter's not like that and I don't see how him choosing not to be with her with chauvinistic.
I think the word he meant was "chivalry".
guys... it was a joke.
The swinging in Web of Shadows was better tho.
DankSilver3 at least in this game the webs stick to buildings correctly.
DankSilver3 I really like spiderman 2 and ultimate spiderman. Should i get Web of shadows?
WH250398 web of shadows was probably my favorite as a kid. Definitely worth the pick up imo
It has a good story and 4 diffrent endings. It might repeat itself a bit, but it's still a must play if you're a Spider-Man fan, especially if you're a Symbiote/Venom fan.
I would think that the swinging in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and Spider-Man 2 were equally as good.
"Once all of his arms are tied up, you've got your chance to put the spider sting on him!"
That escalated quickly
Thank God for Spider Man on the PS4
💯!!
