Added 15kg to my jerk today, thanks in part to hard work and good programming from my coach, but also thanks to the tips I had from you in MK earlier this year Zack. Thanks again - lots of good stuff here too for me to consider in my warm up.
Glad someone is making layman's videos for all this old russian stuff. I've been told by a Russian(klokov) that oscillation doesn't come into play until 170 is on mens bar and 100 women's bar...I've had another russian coach say 160kg
Aka it's great to know this stuff but in reality the bar won't really oscillate in the jerk ever for most of us lol...for a guy who has jerked 170 max and currently about 130, I'd say this is true
Zach can you do a video on maximizing the power jerk. I made the switch due to a recovering back injury, but now I enjoy the power jerk more and would be curious to see your insights on the power jerk.
One tip I found to help my friend was to places something in front of your feet like a plate then do lighter reps with your toes almost touching them. Then try and do the lifts without hitting the plates.
Another cue is to be conscious of your front foot. Be sure to take a big step forward. A short step during the split portion could lead to not getting under the bar fast enough.
I've never met anyone whose developed an imbalanced from splitting. I've been jerking with the same leg forward for 8 years with no noticeable imbalance.
If it lead to an imbalance, and their performance was hindered, it would be a problem. As of right now however, it is undoubtedly the best way to jerk the most weight.
Even if it lead to an imbalance, that would be overlooked because this is a sport. Competitive weightlifting, or any sport, is not a fitness/health pursuit.
Because when they train they do a lot of single leg movements with the opposite leg so as not to develop imbalances. They do various exercises like presses in the split jerk position where they alternate feet in the split. Same with walking lunges etc.
If your looking to maximize your lift you pick one foot and stick with it. If your looking to improve number of reps, general fitness or other then you could train both feet forward. Ultimately since the lift is so technical constantly switching the lead foot would be detrimental to improving and adding weight to the lift. It's no different than a sprinter starting in blocks or a high jumper/long jumper taking off from the ground.
Lydia Valentin is one of the best I have seen in terms of maximizing the stretch reflex and timing of the jerk

Man ! Oh man!
Loved this one.
Specially the old footages.
I am not a Oly Lifter and I love your videos!
Jeez I love this channel so much
What I just needed. A video explaining the Jerk extensively.
You mentioned a russian documentary about weightlifting, is it possible to find it anywhere?
Interested too. What's the documentary?
It is only available in Russian, called “Мастера Железной игры”, “The masters of Iron game”. I saw it on UA-cam, but in Russian only

A 4-plus minute clip - I suppose it's an excerpt...

Excellent video fella !!!
Coach ZT, can you eventually make a video adressing the "Jumping forward" issue during snatch and clean? Thanks!

If your weakness in the SJ is that you tend to press out rather than all out fail, how would you remedy that?
I wanna know too
Lower body is moving too fast compare to your arms. Slow down on the dip, land on the split and fully extend elbows at the same time.
push more, dive more

Enjoy the historical context!
Great video
and... any of these tips apply to the power jerk?
Sincerely yours: a poor Power jerker.

i'm trying to understand olympic weightlifting, why do they do the split stance if it can lead to imbalance from always using the same split?
