  • I decided to put this video together to show how easy it is to get started on a small shelf layout that offers plenty of operation for its size.
Just about everything I have used here is second hand ; base board, track, wiring etc. The only items purchased new are the toggle switches.
I start with showing you the shoddy looking track and go throughout the motions of getting the layout running in this short 20 minute video, from track plan to soldering wires to uncoupling methods and running a train.
If you would like to see how I create scenery, please make a mention below and I'll get onto this next as Part 2.
You can follow the build at Platform 1 MRC : platform1mrc.c... Platform 1 MRC is a model railway forum.
Or you can follow on one of these facebook groups :

G'day Scrapbook RR, I purchased those magnets from ebay (China). Here is a link to the seller : www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lot-20-Pcs-Strong-Magnets-3-mm-x-10-mm-Disc-Neodymium-Fridge-Cylinder-Rare-Earth/170885974581?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Thanks Gary, as most of my track and locos are secondhand, this was very helpful. Might change my name to cheapskate. 😉

Hi Philip, I have built a few layouts now from track I have pulled up from previous layouts. As you can see in this video, I didn't fully clean off all the ballast from the sleepers, as the track will be re-ballasted. Where sleepers are missing, I simply slice the chairs off some old sleepers and then slide back under the rails, applying a small dab of super glue to hold in place.

Great video, who is your supplier of the magnets? That is a perfect solution for my switching (Shunting) layout!

G'day Otter Creek & Rio Grand, take a below as I have supplied a link to the magnets in the reply I gave Scrapbook RR. I normally buy 100 or 200 at anyone time so I have them for the next project. Do you have a link to your RR or are you in any FB groups ?
