Christopher Reeve is not the Classic superman or the 70's Superman ,he is THE Superman ,this amazing movie stil is one of the movie that define the hero movies ,still the world can see the simbol of hope ,the Man that can Fly. Both Donner and Reeve did pave the way for Tim Burton's Batman to get made. And now both Donner and Reeve are together reminiscing and hanging out. I remember when I 1st heard the news on Reeve's horse accident. As someone who did go through a similar accident I was hoping he'd pull through. He will always be Superman.

I was a kid in 1978, and the statement "there wasn't that much Superman merch" baffles me. Star Wars merch was bigger, but Superman stuff was EVERYWHERE back then!
I'm Brazilian and SUPERMAN the movie (1978) for me is the best superhero movie of all time! I watched it at the cinema when I was a child and I still feel like a child today and I am enchanted by the action scenes and special effects! For me it will always be a wonderful and untouchable classic.
Other things you may not know: - You mentioned Tom Mankiewicz and how he made changes, but he is the actual and true writer of this movie. Start to finish, he gutted the original scripts and essentially rewrote the whole thing. But, the WGA refused to give him writer's credit. So Donner made up a brand new title for him: Creative Consultant. And, they put his name AFTER all the other writers in the opening credits. That pissed off the WGA and led to legal disputes, but Tom ultimately won. - Gene Hackman originally refused to shave his moustache for the role. It was something he felt he was known for and sort of his trademark. He was discussing it over the phone with Richard Donner (whom he hadn't met yet) and Donner said "I'll make you a deal. If you shave off your moustache, I'll shave off mine." Gene, not knowing Donner didn't wear a moustache, agreed. So when Gene and Donner finally met, Gene showed him his newly shorn face and told him "Ok now it's your turn." So Donner then peeled off the fake moustache he had recently put on for their meet. Gene found it hilarious. - The fact that Donner truly won over the cast and got them to side with him is really an understatement. When the Salkind's fired Donner, Hackman hands-down quit. Many of Hackman's scenes in Superman 2 are used with body doubles and even voice-over impressionists. The ones that are used were ones that had already been filmed by Donner.
He left out a couple of big things: 1) Marlon Brando wasn't popular thanks to The Godfather; he was one of the most popular and acclaimed actors of the past several decades. Same goes for Gene Hackman; yes, The French Connection had been a huge boost to his career as a leading man, but he had already been getting prominent roles for a number of years. 2) Brando didn't bother to learn any of his lines when he showed up to film; instead, he demanded that cue cards be laid on the floor, so he could glance down at them and quickly memorize the next line 3) In a move that later became canon (most people probably assume it was always this way) it was Brando's idea for the iconic "S" serve as a type of family crest, not just something he made up on Earth. 4) Lex Luthor's most recognizable feature is his baldness, but Gene Hackman flat out refused to shave his head and didn't want to go through make-up every morning being fitted for a bald cap. So instead, he came up with the idea of Luthor wearing a different wig in every scene. 5) Hackman was also hesitant to shave his mustache, so Richard Donner made a deal with him that if he did, he would also shave his mustache. The thing is, Richard Donner didn't have a mustache, but he anticipated Hackman's reluctance and wore a fake one to their first meeting. So when filming began and Hackman showed up clean shaven, he asked Donner when he was gonna shave. Donner simply reached up and pulled his fake mustache off.

I'm probably one of the few people in the world who didn't mind Brandon Routh's Superman, and part of that was I felt he captured some of Reeve's essence in his portrayal. My only problem with his and Henry Cavill's films has more to do with the writing and directing than the actors' performances. Even Christopher Reeve had to deal with the crap that was Superman III.

This was a good one to pick for an ode to Richard Donner. This movie has stood up well over the years as most special effects usually show the movies up but this has survived the scrutiny of that.
Christopher Reeve will always remain the Definitive Superman. Every other Superman will always be compared to him but none will compare. Richard Donner is the one who pushed for Reeve and he put out a genuine classic that give birth to the modern comic book movie as it is today. Verisimilitude as Donner's motto go is what Excelsior is to Stan Lee.
Christopher Reeve became one of my first movie crushes. I was 10 when this movie came out. They had these lovely glossy programs that they gave at the theater; I can’t remember if they were free or if you had to pay for it. And when you opened the middle of the book it was a full two pages of him flying through the air in the Fortress of solitude in Superman.🥰
Yes, you had to pay for that program. I remember the box office woman wearing a pin that said, "Ask me about the souvenir Superman program." So I asked. It cost a couple of dollars, so I bought it, but then I didn't have any money for popcorn or soda. It was totally worth it.
I was in my early teens when the movie came out, and the only negative part for me was "Can You Read My Mind" being played over and over again wherever I went (including a baseball game).
Still the best superhero movie. It has so much heart. It is also sticks in my memory of seeing this in the theater as a kid and that first time they show Superman in his suit flying in the Fortress of Solitude, the crowd stood up and screamed and applauded. To this day, I have never seen that again in a theater. That theater was electric that day. It still gives me goosebumps when I see that scene because I remember that day.
Hand to God when John Williams theme came on I actually got goosebumps! Definitely One of the Top Five themes of all time to me. Although, is it just me or do a lot of superhero movies have amazing music themes you could make a case for? I'm a huge fan of the 89 Batman theme.
There used to be great themes, but not anymore. I think that Jerry Goldsmith's theme for The Shadow was the last decent (not great) theme for a hero, if not a superhero.
John Williams is just an iconic composer. The opening of Krypton the music is just so powerful and simple. He is one of very few music composers in which have loved his scores in the different movies he has done.
Minty has become my favorite UA-camr. Always entertaining learning about movies we grew up with and love. Plus, I didn’t even know Richard Donner died until watching this very sad.
Little known fact: While on Tour in the US: Rob Halford, singer of Judas Priest met Christopher Reeve who was in costume on set and they had a brief conversation. What a world! Supermen crossing paths, simply amazing....!

Thank you for the tribute at the end... Superman WAS my childhood ! My mom spent an entire weekend making my suit, as close to Reeves version as possible... So happy I'm a kid of the 80's ;-)

What hasn’t been said about Superman the movie. It’s one of the greatest films of all time, a true epic. Christopher Reeve gave a legendary performance, the movie was brilliantly shot by Richard Donner, the musical score by John Williams is absolutely epic and the practical special effects and optical effects are second to none. Simply put, Superman the movie is a masterpiece. I don’t think I’ve watched any other movie as many times as Superman. I grew up on it and I still love it to this day. The one thing I remember reading about was that it was Marlon Brando’s idea to have Jor-El wear the Superman S Shield on his chest during the Krypton scenes. Because of Brando, the Superman S became the family Sigil of the house of El. I always thought that was a cool little factoid. Anyways, Thank you so much for sharing all this behind the scenes info. It’s always nice to hear other fans speak on this classic film. Cheers!

That's crazy. I mean, I adore Reeve. He was my Superman growing up, but other interpretations are great. Cavill is Superman for this generation. And I love Superman in the show Superman and Lois.

The TV cut (while lengthy) fills in a lot critical dialogue and events leading up to key scenes in the theatrical cut and shows a lot more of Supes in action. It looks fantastic on the blu-ray release as well.
Minty has reviewed the Superman series in reverse or random order, it seems. To the best of my knowledge, no review of Superman Returns, an 'homage sequel' to I and II, and the last one to use the iconic John William main score.
Omg Margot Kidder was so beautiful in 1978. It is a tragedy how drastically her health declined over the following years at what seemed to be a rapid pace. The change in her appearance can be seen as early as her scenes in Superman II.

I went to The Flick Twin Cinema, pour one out for movie theaters not here anymore, to see Superman BITD. At one point, my jaw dropped open and my gum fell into my long hair. But I didn't realize it until I was home. I was able to really get it smooshed in good before I told Momma. So, Superman made me get a haircut. 😂✌🏻☮️
I loved in the extended cut the scene with Kal-El and Jor-El in the Fortress of Solitude, after Superman is revealed to the world. It's a nice touch, and hits on a lot of great themes (about Superman not being available 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and the reason he has to keep his identity a secret).

I was 4 years old, growing up in Astoria, Oregon, and I remember watching Richard Donner direct The Goonies one block down the street from my boyhood home. He was my childhood.
Whats even stranger is him saying Donner didnt return, when in fact Donner was fired halfway into the production because 1 and 2 were filmed back to back

Many lawsuits followed, and I've not had any respect for the Salkinds ever since. I dearly love those Musketeers movies, though.

Christopher Reeve became one of my first movie crushes. I was 10 when this movie came out. They had these lovely glossy programs that they gave at the theater; I can’t remember if they were free or if you had to pay for it. And when you opened the middle of the book it was a full two pages of him flying through the air in the Fortress of solitude in Superman.🥰
Yes, you had to pay for that program. I remember the box office woman wearing a pin that said, "Ask me about the souvenir Superman program." So I asked. It cost a couple of dollars, so I bought it, but then I didn't have any money for popcorn or soda. It was totally worth it.
Knowing Lois was supposed so sing during the flying scene, suddenly I hear “A Whole New World”
11-year-old me thought that was the most romantic movie moment I'd ever seen.
I was in my early teens when the movie came out, and the only negative part for me was "Can You Read My Mind" being played over and over again wherever I went (including a baseball game).

Still the best superhero movie. It has so much heart. It is also sticks in my memory of seeing this in the theater as a kid and that first time they show Superman in his suit flying in the Fortress of Solitude, the crowd stood up and screamed and applauded. To this day, I have never seen that again in a theater. That theater was electric that day. It still gives me goosebumps when I see that scene because I remember that day.
Hand to God when John Williams theme came on I actually got goosebumps! Definitely One of the Top Five themes of all time to me. Although, is it just me or do a lot of superhero movies have amazing music themes you could make a case for? I'm a huge fan of the 89 Batman theme.
There used to be great themes, but not anymore. I think that Jerry Goldsmith's theme for The Shadow was the last decent (not great) theme for a hero, if not a superhero.

John Williams is just an iconic composer. The opening of Krypton the music is just so powerful and simple. He is one of very few music composers in which have loved his scores in the different movies he has done.
Minty has become my favorite UA-camr. Always entertaining learning about movies we grew up with and love. Plus, I didn’t even know Richard Donner died until watching this very sad.

Thank you for the tribute at the end... Superman WAS my childhood ! My mom spent an entire weekend making my suit, as close to Reeves version as possible... So happy I'm a kid of the 80's ;-)

What hasn’t been said about Superman the movie. It’s one of the greatest films of all time, a true epic. Christopher Reeve gave a legendary performance, the movie was brilliantly shot by Richard Donner, the musical score by John Williams is absolutely epic and the practical special effects and optical effects are second to none. Simply put, Superman the movie is a masterpiece. I don’t think I’ve watched any other movie as many times as Superman. I grew up on it and I still love it to this day. The one thing I remember reading about was that it was Marlon Brando’s idea to have Jor-El wear the Superman S Shield on his chest during the Krypton scenes. Because of Brando, the Superman S became the family Sigil of the house of El. I always thought that was a cool little factoid. Anyways, Thank you so much for sharing all this behind the scenes info. It’s always nice to hear other fans speak on this classic film. Cheers!

That's crazy. I mean, I adore Reeve. He was my Superman growing up, but other interpretations are great. Cavill is Superman for this generation. And I love Superman in the show Superman and Lois.

The TV cut (while lengthy) fills in a lot critical dialogue and events leading up to key scenes in the theatrical cut and shows a lot more of Supes in action. It looks fantastic on the blu-ray release as well.

Omg Margot Kidder was so beautiful in 1978. It is a tragedy how drastically her health declined over the following years at what seemed to be a rapid pace. The change in her appearance can be seen as early as her scenes in Superman II.

I went to The Flick Twin Cinema, pour one out for movie theaters not here anymore, to see Superman BITD.
At one point, my jaw dropped open and my gum fell into my long hair. But I didn't realize it until I was home. I was able to really get it smooshed in good before I told Momma. So, Superman made me get a haircut. 😂✌🏻☮️
I loved in the extended cut the scene with Kal-El and Jor-El in the Fortress of Solitude, after Superman is revealed to the world. It's a nice touch, and hits on a lot of great themes (about Superman not being available 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and the reason he has to keep his identity a secret).

@@EmperorGuyver Just like The Three and Four Musketeers, another Salkind production. Except that the actors had only been paid for ONE movie, and the Salkinds tried to pull a fast one. Many lawsuits followed, and I've not had any respect for the Salkinds ever since. I dearly love those Musketeers movies, though.

To the "Boy scout Superman won't work in 20XX" cynics out there, please know that Reeves' Superman was hopelessly corny in 1978 as well. Superman's goodness is even more important to the character than his power, regardless of the current year.
