An excellent video, I've played a lot over the last 2 years and I think you've captured the pro's and con's well. Everything the dev team does is quality, and they provide a large number of improvements each and every month. This is my #1 MMO, I love being a part of this village and see no reason to change.
Love this game. It's like a mix of Guild War 1, Everquest, and has a Dark Souls feels. I thought the game was going to be boring, but when you finally get into the Ember Veins (dungeons), it's amazing. The combat feels a little clunky at first, but it's totally fine. Embers Adrift wiki is very helpful and should be used when playing; especially for questing.
Great Informative Video! I came from Old School Runescape where I accumulated several thousand hours only to go to Project Gorgon to do the same and now I'm done playing Gorgon and experiencing Everquest for first time on the Private Server Project Quarm which preserves Old School Everquest with Quality of Life and i'm having fun in Kunark as a first timer. Regardless, I personally would not try Embers Adrift, unless they fixed the problems you addressed in this video. Embers Adrift looks like it be fun, but the state its in now is not fun enough and thus you have Gorgon, P99 & Quarm as well as Everquest 2 classic server and even Monsters and Memories to seek your teeth into. I think Embers Adrift would greatly benefit from bringing you on as some sort of advisor to make the game better. Also Embers Adrift should be on steam store to reach more players, I know steam takes a cut but steam has a farther reach, that's what Gorgon did.
Hey bud! I hope they make the changes those here have been recommending, and I hope they find a way to expand their reach (Steam most likely). Hope you're well. 💖
More and more I get enchanted by your videos. Very good reviews, not shying away from listing negatives. The game sounded very interesting for me, until the moment you've mentioned the lack of Quest EXP and solo play being ill advised. I like 'old-school' in MMORPG games, but there is a fine line for me. I am not a fan of pure grind, be it in western EQ1-esque or Korean games. Sadly, the class system and the way magic is handled was also something which doesn't make me feel like investing in this project. I do hope however, that if finds its crowd. Folks who grew up on EverQuest 1 would probably appreciate it more, whereas I am more of a Vanilla WoW type of 'old-school'.
Played for some time. It's a really nice game, grounded and simply fun. The only thing draggin it IMHO is the lack of content (like quests for more levels) and life, be it NPCs roaming arround... I think it would appeal more players and with more people the core principle of the game would work like intended. P.S: the gameplay loop the last time I dipped was only grind.
Very nice review and spot on in some things. I will say the music is very nice in Embers (didnt hear you have it turned up much) when comparing sounds. Also, your skills in Embers do advance as you level (taking less stamina and increase to a improved version), but you are correct that 1h or 2h skill doesnt increase per swing. There is also horizontal progression in Embers, and hunting log kills allow you to build stats vs creatures, and the Alchemy system allows you to level up an Alchemy skill the more you use it. The game, as you mentioned, has a great foundation. It really shines in an ember vein in a full party with all members firing off alchemy magic skills. There you will see the magic effects shining off dungeon walls in the dark and here the sounds of skills being executed. (The combat comparison between EQ showing casters vs. melee attackers in Embers was a little lopsided IMO). Overall great review and I encourage more folks to try the game out. It has a certain charm about it that is hard to find in today's games.
Wanted to give Embers a shot but it didn't run very well for me last time I tried. It does look fun though. On the EQ clips, the ground textures are interesting. Is that a private server, mod or something else?
If you have a competitive Nvidia card, you can try their upscaling tech that makes Embers Adrift run reasonably well. The EQ footage was taken on P99, and the graphics are from swapping out some files:www.reddit.com/r/project1999/comments/10rz5r0/eq_basic_v11_an_eq_graphics_overhaul_project/

Yes, its fun and adds to the experience but its not going to be what your envisioning. Its worth a look at though, I believe they made it available at lvl 12 now. The biggest issue I had was there's nobody to play with.
@@Nobody-dc8dp Not enough content to keep me or most people around while we wait im afraid. Nor does the content feel fun or engaging enough to play atm.

Thank you for the review, I never heard of this game, or you, until I saw this video. This looks like a game I could like so I checked the website (just 5 minutes ago) and found that they added 50% off on purchasing the game (20 instead of 40) and that's tempting. I decided to take a look at the perks from purchasing because I know that I'm likely to buy it if I'll try it and something's worrying me: If you buy the monthly sub (not the purchase) you get extra storage, a 'Drifters Crafting Station Portable' which sounds like field crafting for your group and group wide bonus for healing... Which are pay to win - you can run dungeons better compared to other groups and if there's pvp... ohh boy. It makes me wonder how the game handles that balance-wise and if the devs plan to look into changing these benefits. I'm not even too worried about what the game does with the 4 active character slots you'd have left out if you were a monthly sub and stopped (though having 5 characters and then going down to 1 because your wallet is too light that month sounds just bad), and I'm fine with the other differences.
Heya. (Elloa, CM here) Our game is absolutely not pay to win. We are very ethical with our monetisation as this is something very important to us, to the point we are literally shooting ourselves in the feets for not having any microtransactions (But the whole team is very much against microtransactions)> So the bonus you are talking about: Regen at the ember ring and portable crafting station are triggered by subscriibers but benefit every players, may they be subscribers or not subscribers. The extra storage is needed for having several characters. We tried to find compelling sub perks that are NOT pay to win. Most of the perks are cosmetics (such as purple name, title Hero of Stormhaven etc) The system has been designed intently for players to alternate month with a sub and month without a sub. So a player who used to subscribe, will just have to choose what character they want to play, whilst the other are "dormant". A players can also pick up what is in their "sub slots" of their inventory but can not add more items to those place. So everything is always avalaible at any time. Thank you for your question.
Thanks for the quick reply Elloa! I'd like to ask for some clarifications if that's okay - 1 - You mentioned "Regen at the ember ring" but that's not the way it's phrased and by the look I got at the site I don't know what the ember ring is. Can you tell me what it is? 2 - Would you say the portable crafting station allows for more efficient farming as it might save travel time to unload/restock things at the inventory and dungeon runs (again with restocking)? I understand it's planned as being a general benefit but reality dictates that there will always be people with more of those and people with none in their group. 3 - What's your approach to moving from 5 characters to 1 in regards of storage space? Your FAQ says the player would have to choose 1 character and will they get access to their total storage, does each character has its' own storage, will parts of the total storage be blocked or do you have a different solution I didn't think of? As an outsider to the game the FAQ left me wondering about that. If you referred to this when you said "A players can also pick up what is in their "sub slots" of their inventory" I didn't understand because there's a separate reference to 'inventory' and 'storage' on the perks page. 4 - On his review Marle mentioned it's hard to tell what's possible to interact with (example in 13:40 ). Will you be looking to change that in the future, making the game more modern-like or do you want to keep the more classic style which exists now? Overall I think this is a pretty interesting project and as content keeps coming out I'll keep an eye on it, I have a feeling I'll like it
I followed back when it was Saga as well. I know there was quite the legal foray going with them and Renfail. Used to watch him a lot, but his attitude and spam of videos he tosses out, stopped me from watching him. Am glad to see this game at least came out as is. Played a bit of it, might need to jump back in.
Third day playing, got into an active guild, leveled to 12, had some pretty crazy dungeon crawls. A lot of the old school mechanics to remember again. Very unforgiving game if you are one of those “participation trophy” families..
The solo loops are nice! Solo content is much improved now compared to what I saw a year ago when I was on the fence. I soloed 16 levels of my 20 on one toon and 12 levels on my alt. Once you build your vault with gear, currency, you can just “handmedown” gear to your alts. This makes leveling a breeze.
It's super weird i went from embers adrift to trying out EQ2 the origin server (a game i never thought of ever trying) and found how similar it is to Embers but somehow still better in many ways and has that social aspect in it as well, i do think embers could become something special one day but sadly it's not there yet and the extreme slow leveling/very same feel of abilities is still one of the few things that keeps me away.
@@oran1plays I have played EQ2 origins as well when it launched. Game is definitely great and has some comparison to Embers. One thing is i don’t mind soloing in EQ 2 origins but despise it in Embers. I agree that I has the capabilities of becoming something special- the devs need to figure out the changes that will benefit the players the best. Also bring in and keep new players.
So sick of the 'games as a service' model, forever fishing for my wallet. This is why I don't play them, and instead am enjoying a near-endless supply of already released games that existed before this was an idea 😉
im super stoked for hellgate london 2 new name :) Hellgate redemption :) the OG looter shooter is back i F ing loved this game back in the day & IMO still the best looter shooter if u play the modded version...if they just updated it to today's stander's it would crush warframe destiny BL TD i playd em all but hellgate london is still the king. im acutely a new looter shooter called the first descendant & i just want to sit the devs down & make them play hellgate & take notes
The idea and design is great, but the visuals and art is like we are back in 2005 again and that is reason why this game scares NEW people away. You can have the old design and still have great visuals and animation, those are not what made old school mmos special in the first place.
Heya! (Elloa, CM here) I think you are exagerating and a little unfair. :) We are not NewWorld pretty obviously, but artistic preferences asside, the game is looking pretty good and very far from 2005 grafics style. As a reminder we are a super small team with very little means. We are doing our best with what we have, but we can not possibly attain AAA quality. Yet we provide a game with gorgeous vistas and the modern High Def features provided by UNITY.
@@ElloaWendyI just pulled a video of the thundering steps theme song from eq2 2004 because Its just a fantastic song! When I did pull it up they showed the graphics of a valley there. Not even close to Embers. EQ2 had chamfers mountains, spray painted on cardboard grass. Embers has amazing foliage, tree cover is dense enough that you are cautioned to see what is on the other side of that tree. ua-cam.com/video/s4ZZqjKACL4/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
@@ElloaWendyyour response is the reason why I subbed this game in the first place. You took what resources you had and maximized it. The game looks amazing to me. This is coming from a pc gamer who runs Black Desert Online on max settings. Embers is not running circa 2004 graphics. Every game can use improvements but graphics would not be my number one priority at this time. And for the record, new world is focusing on the jump to consoles now. Steamcharts Last 30 days population average = 3,987.6. Jan 2022 = 65,106.8. Not going to use the first year but the second instead. They had a 200 million invested cost. I am glad you are not new world!
@@ElloaWendy Sometimes having a large development team and budget can be detrimental to a team’s vision. You guys got the product out the door which is more than I can say for a lot of game devs these days. The most notable being Marc Jacobs (camelot unchained). I would rather play through and witness the improvements/fixes than have to listen to them and never be able to see it for myself.
At 18:57 you said, "For example, my supporter can only learn a maximum of 10 skills." Well, you should be happy to know, then, that this is incorrect. There are 10 skills that will be given to you automatically when you level. However, there are other skills in the game for you to learn. You just have to go out in the world and find them.
Good video. Glad you made it about Embers. It is a good game when there are people to group with. It does have a good foundation but still needs some work. You mentioned it took you about 10 hours and got to level 8. When you get in the 20s 10 hours won’t even get you one level. That is very slow xp and slower than almost any MMO out now. Again appreciate the content and wish this game gets more players.
I should have asked the developers if they have internal reporting tools to show where retention falls off. I personally don't have the time to invest 10 hours for 1 level unless there were a lot of others systems simultaneously being developed too. 💖
@@MarleMMO would love to see where the retention falls off. Also, a lot of us don’t have 10 plus hours to invest per level, especially in the 20s. Maybe in the high 40s-50. This may be a big reason why the casual player stops playing.
@@MarleMMO same situation here. I think a lot of us are in a similar situation and unfortunately this game is not casual friendly in the current state. I do wish it make some changes to help accommodate the casual player.
I remember when they had a buy to play model. I asked about getting a refund if I buy it and did not like it and they more or less said they CAN'T give refunds to players (other players also harasses me about asking this like wtf?)... Just not being able to get money back after buying and trying a game made me not really want to play it at all. This maybe why they don't want to put their game on steam. It is good now they let you try for free now but still, I won't event try the game. That experience just left a bad taste in my mouth. Also Project Quarm just got The Ruins of Kunark expansion so I need to level my wizard to 60 and get his epic.
I think you were a bit too forgiving on the combat. I am a founder as I support what they are doing but I won't play it again until there is a more significant combat update and likely also oceanic servers.
love this game but i dont have time to spend 2 hours just looking for a group for to grind mobs for 45 minutes before someone has to go and you have to fill his spot....if the population ever gets back to where it was when it first launched ill come back....but finding groups is a chore and you dont really have a choice but grind with a group unless you want to solo mobs and it will take you your whole lifetime to gain levels
it's a great game until you run into the issue that all oldschool MMOs suffer from. that being, you're effectively gatekept from progressing if you can't find enough people online to form a group
@@MarleMMO it has sadly led me into dropping the game after around level 12 just due to population logisitcs. Sitting around with LFG open and spamming chat LFG/LFM just isn't a very fun gameplay

Another thing I'd like to point out is I hate the take Renfail has on classic games these days, he used to be such a backer on Everquest but now if you tune into any of his streams or check out his channel, he or more less praises modern games and downvotes older or retro games or indie projects. He is very much a negative person these days, so I wasn't surprised that he didn't return your email. Although, I do sometimes go back and watch his more positive videos he did on EQ.
Its very very laggy for me with all settings on potato. I do not have any issues with any other MMO thats out with the lag. Feels very unoptimized. So for me wont be playing till that fixed
Its still so weird to me that they refuse to add a magic class, Ok if they dont want magic but then dont add things like treants and 2 suns/moons to the game rhat make it seem like a fantasy game because if sruff around you can be fantasy why cant your charakter be fantasy? That is what bothers me. Atleast idk make a alchemy class that thrhrows potions at the enemies or smth... Even the icons in game looks fantasy... It even says "unique fantasy setting" on their homepage....wtf

Heya! (Elloa, CM here) - This is not a refusal. going on steam requiere so much more work than one would think. It has technical, legal etc implication that requiere much more work than plug and go. This certainly something we are considering to work on in the future, and as Undone (our tech director) said, if he could snap in his finger, it would be done. :)

Overall I think this is a pretty interesting project and as content keeps coming out I'll keep an eye on it, I have a feeling I'll like it
I can add that EA is as "pay to win" as Path of Exile. Their monetization strategy is bravely ethical. 🥰
I hope you enjoy Embers Adrift! It's 50% off right now. 🥰
Enjoyed Everquest and some of early EQ2 so was thinking about giving this a shot..but this was 29 minutes of stay away..so thank you! lol
It's free to try, so if you're interested, give it a shot. 🥰
Third day playing, got into an active guild, leveled to 12, had some pretty crazy dungeon crawls. A lot of the old school mechanics to remember again. Very unforgiving game if you are one of those “participation trophy” families..
🥰
Game looks very sad right now in its current state, let’s hope to see modern version of that
I think there's a lot of hope for EA - time and polish should bode well for them. 🥰
I put a good 500 or so hours into this game. Its fkin great.
What keeps you playing? 🥰
@@MarleMMO I dont play anymore. I had my fill, it was fun.
@user-xd7rc6eo8n 🥰
Long time viewer and love your vids... Have you thought about covering EVE Online ?
Thank you! Yes. One of these days I'll cover EVE! 🥰
I just found out about this game, been waiting for ages for Pantheon to come out, but this looks way more accessible.
🥰
I don’t mind group play, but I do like solo content, because not everyone can play at peak times.
Totally! 💖
EQ2 Origins is great. Enjoy! 🥰
@@MarleMMO thanks lol, so far it's great!😃- btw great video.
💖
@@oran1plays I have played EQ2 origins as well when it launched. Game is definitely great and has some comparison to Embers. One thing is i don’t mind soloing in EQ 2 origins but despise it in Embers. I agree that I has the capabilities of becoming something special- the devs need to figure out the changes that will benefit the players the best. Also bring in and keep new players.
I hear you. 💖
My favorite mmo is still ddo but I'll check this one out!
🥰
So sick of the 'games as a service' model, forever fishing for my wallet. This is why I don't play them, and instead am enjoying a near-endless supply of already released games that existed before this was an idea 😉
🥳
im super stoked for hellgate london 2 new name :) Hellgate redemption :) the OG looter shooter is back i F ing loved this game back in the day & IMO still the best looter shooter if u play the modded version...if they just updated it to today's stander's it would crush warframe destiny BL TD i playd em all but hellgate london is still the king. im acutely a new looter shooter called the first descendant & i just want to sit the devs down & make them play hellgate & take notes
🥰
I thought the trees/foliage was not rendering correctly on on PC but it seems like it is normal
Trees are hard to render in any engine, though yes, there were some blurs when I used DLSS (or whatever it's called). 🥰
I hear you; I personally like their style yet to each their own. 🥰

I would rather play through and witness the improvements/fixes than have to listen to them and never be able to see it for myself.
did u try outpost infinity siege its super uniq its like 10 different games in1 but just works
I haven't heard about it yet! 🥰
At 18:57 you said, "For example, my supporter can only learn a maximum of 10 skills."
Well, you should be happy to know, then, that this is incorrect. There are 10 skills that will be given to you automatically when you level. However, there are other skills in the game for you to learn. You just have to go out in the world and find them.
I'm glad to learn! 🥰
I had the time 20 years ago. Now? I'm lucky if I can play a game for a few hours each week. 💖
@@MarleMMO same situation here. I think a lot of us are in a similar situation and unfortunately this game is not casual friendly in the current state. I do wish it make some changes to help accommodate the casual player.
They could also consider a GW2 style progression in which the 'max' level is really the floor for horizontal progression. 💖
Missed you man, great video!
Thank you! Producing long videos isn't helping the amount I can publish lol 🥰
You get other skills after lvl 30 but they are mod drops.
Enjoy Quarm! 🥰
I think you were a bit too forgiving on the combat. I am a founder as I support what they are doing but I won't play it again until there is a more significant combat update and likely also oceanic servers.
Too each their own 🥰
love this game but i dont have time to spend 2 hours just looking for a group for to grind mobs for 45 minutes before someone has to go and you have to fill his spot....if the population ever gets back to where it was when it first launched ill come back....but finding groups is a chore and you dont really have a choice but grind with a group unless you want to solo mobs and it will take you your whole lifetime to gain levels
🥰
I tried it but didn't enjoy the low fantasy setting. I wanted to be other races than human.
Totally fair preference 🥰
silica is a game u might like to 1 man dev team its a RTS/FPS hybrid
💖
Why is all EQ gameplay shown present a naked character on screen lmao
Early level non-twinked wood elves are mostly naked, true. 🤣
I won't ever play it until they fix a proper ranger/archer class. I don't like any of these classes that they have in game.
Totally fair - what's broken about their ranged role?
it's a great game until you run into the issue that all oldschool MMOs suffer from. that being, you're effectively gatekept from progressing if you can't find enough people online to form a group
Yeah, the prohibition due to a lack of population or social connections can be challenging. 🥰
@@MarleMMO it has sadly led me into dropping the game after around level 12 just due to population logisitcs. Sitting around with LFG open and spamming chat LFG/LFM just isn't a very fun gameplay
@fencingfireferret1188 yeah, I hope they respond to this common point of feedback. 🥰
im more stoked for jeffrey butters new game avalon its a game for modders/devs like SC/WC or roadblocks BUT its got super next gen tech like the AI NPC r GPT ish like u can talk to them on a mice and give them commands or tell badys to stop shooting u lol its in unreal5 & has a better art style IMO & just a long list of inovativ stuff i still talk to dave & jeff & IMO jeffs team is way more inovativ+ the CEO is a ex WC/SC modr like me :)so we talk shop
🙂
Another thing I'd like to point out is I hate the take Renfail has on classic games these days, he used to be such a backer on Everquest but now if you tune into any of his streams or check out his channel, he or more less praises modern games and downvotes older or retro games or indie projects. He is very much a negative person these days, so I wasn't surprised that he didn't return your email. Although, I do sometimes go back and watch his more positive videos he did on EQ.
I'd love to at least chat with him. Maybe one day. 💖
Its very very laggy for me with all settings on potato. I do not have any issues with any other MMO thats out with the lag. Feels very unoptimized. So for me wont be playing till that fixed
That's fair! 🥰
I believe they wanted "ember" to be used by any class which is why the feature is available to anyone. 🥰
i think i tried to talk 1 of the devs out of joining this team because he's not a fan of tab targeting games & i cant stand tab targeting plea's dont hate me it was like 4ish years ago
To each their own 🥰
@@MarleMMO raph K & dave G just released a new game called ( stars reach ) i still chat with dave g because of landmark/EQN so i know things about the new game like its got even batter voxel tech then LM :) & i chat with jeffrey butter from EQN/LM & hes got a new game im vary stoked for called ( avalon ) search AVALON Teaser Trailer
I'm very much looking forward to Stars Reach! 💖
Comparing the game mechanic to BDO ... is so wrong.
I did say the point is to show how BDO has multi layered combat and trade skills whereas Embers Adrift only has good group content. 🥰
tell me u played mount & blade bannerlord & cyberpunk2077 top 10 in my books must plays.. might be even to good for u🤭
Yes to both. 🥰
This is not a good mmo. If you play and advertise a game which is worse than 2004 games we wont have good things
You're free to have that opinion. 🥰
Their refusal to use Steam is baffling.
I hope they change their mind. 🥰
@@ElloaWendy Thank you for the clarification! 💖
@@ElloaWendy True but staying off steam just hurts the game, Steam is juggernaut platform of finding and playing games and now that pretty much everyone has a steam deck, it's great to play games on the deck. Pretty sure Gorgon can be played on the deck.
I think she's communicating the team's intent to eventually publish on Steam yet doing so is not trivial. Of course, I speculate. 💖
Too bad 30 players is peek time
:/
"when grouping with the developers" so basically your whole vid is a paid ad
They didn't pay me.
🤮🤮
