I was really bad at drawing torsos,so I started sketching my classmates body shapes and I found that that really helped me learn proportions. If you really struggle with proportions, just sit on a bench in a park or something and sketch everyone who passes you. Very helpful.
This is genuinely one of the only tutorials I can follow. I’ve been trying to add different shapes to my characters but I couldn’t figure out how and the other videos didn’t teach as much as they just showed. Thank you so much!
7 minutes trust me 7 minutes of this video will change your drawing so much in a good way that u will love it....trust me.....a very very very nice video.....thank u so much!!!
Thank you so much! You speak and explain perfect for me!, I mean, I have a little troubles watching videos in English, because the most of the artists in UA-cam speak so fast and I can't understand. I speak Spanish so I apologize for the mistakes in my comment Anyway, thanks for the video!
"Character 1 with hair like this, and Character 2 with hair like that. And it's the only way you can really distinguish between the two characters" That line reminded me of the shitty comic series I made when I was in 6th grade, where I would just change slightly details of normal stickmans like the arms, legs or head to recognize each character from another one.
I know this video is at least 6 years old at this point, so I don't know if you will even see or read this comment, but thank you. This clears up an issue I've been struggling with. When drawing characters, new or existing, I noticed that I always start with the head as my foundation, and that often would put me in a bind where I end up fretting over what kind of pose and body I want the character to have. And it would also lead me towards that "t-shirt" body shape you mention in this video. I also just watched your video, "The Reason You Can't Improve Your Art" just prior to this one. Which helped me adapt to a more constructive mindset. So I pulled out my tablet, opened up Autodesk Sketchbook, and followed the exercise. And it worked really well. I already noticed a sense of personality from these basic figures. One is slouching, another standing proud and tall, etc. I will keep practicing with this, and check out part 2.
Ooh this is pretty awesome, one thing I've always had a hard time doing are characters with... not so perfect posture. I don't see that many folks that take the proper heroic gym teacher stance that you see models do, but I've never been able to get that balance/imbalanced look of a sloucher.
I've never been more happy then I am right now in my life, i've been trying to draw for years but I never found anyone/anything that could help me until I found this video. You have given me hope to draw again and i've never been more thankful, Thank you...
This video was really well made. I loved the instructor-to-student vibe going on. I was following along and the pace was great and you can tell this guy really knows his stuff. Thanks!
This tutorial has been most helpful. I've always struggled with character bodies, but now that I've gone through this, I think I'm starting to understand thanks to you.
really useful! I'll make sure to practice this. I always struggle to make different body types, so I'm sure Ross will definitely help me with that. thanks for making this! !
This was super helpful! I always have struggled with bodies and ended up with stick figures. This has changed my whole way of thinking when drawing, thank you!
Thank you, that helped me, a lot. I have penned a number of children's stories, but have yet to include graphics because I am presently capable of drawing 'stick people' only. How I wish that you were here, to visualise and bring the characters to life.....
I've been frustrated recently with how similar all of my human characters look.. but whenever I try to exaggerate their features or body types, it just doesn't look right because my style is generally less cartoonish :/ Great tutorial, though, as always!
My style is cartoonish, but my humans also kinda look the same, so now I try to give them more diversity, because they used to have exactly the same body shape and face.
Hey Brookes, have you seen all the Little Nightmares fanart there is out there? Six is surprisingly easy to draw. So is The Lady. An early part of your presentation explains why.
I was listening to this like a Podcast while in the shower And felt called out by Shower line 🤣, I tensed up like I was being watched through the screen
if you're familiar with pixel art, i'm wondering what you think of translating rough sketches to pixel art, versus sketching in pixels to start with? i've tried both, and i'm struggling to make my ideas readable.
This channel is so awesome! I am still in school and working on my project in my personal time (between work and school I don't have much) and your videos are so helpful. When I graduate next year and finally have more time and money I will happily pay for your more advanced content ( ᐛ )و
At 3:17 you said that in character design you want to exaggerate and push things over the edge - that’s really the only thing about this video that throws me off. Definitely yeah, some exaggeration can be useful, but isn’t that not necessarily what you should always do? Like if you’re doing a less cartoony art style, wouldn’t you want your body proportions to look realistic?
I was really bad at drawing torsos,so I started sketching my classmates body shapes and I found that that really helped me learn proportions. If you really struggle with proportions, just sit on a bench in a park or something and sketch everyone who passes you. Very helpful.

What if u in quarantine?

This is interesting, could you perhaps make a video about practicing different face strutures? Love your videos!

*my art doesn’t look the same anymore, thanks!*

I don't think you need to worry about grammar; there aren't too many mistakes in your comment (:

Seems like muchos de nosotros are digging english videos

I really need it thanks for your effort , really appreciate it that how simply you explained you deserve many more followers ❤❤
I found this really helpful. I like your style - you are not super-hyped about everything you do, it's logical, simple and calm. Very nicely done. :D
I think this is my next step, not doing every single character with the same anime body XDDD
Thanks, this is very useful for me! :)

dude, this video was so relaxing. gonna give it a go. i like the simple parts: circular head, body shape, triangle for limbs. nice 👍💯
Very nice. There are not too many drawing videos on UA-cam that start off with basic shapes first, and this is what I was looking for.
How dare you make me want to redesign every single sprite I’m making for this video game again
My friend and I decided to practice each of these steps one at a time for a few weeks at a time.

Not sure if you're still checking comments on this video or not, but it was super helpful. I was making it way harder on myself than it needed to be.
This is neat! I always tend to always use the hourglass shape with variations for the segment and proportions. I should really try these!
I think these series of yours are going to unlock a part inside of me that I didn't know how to get out :'D
Thank you for this it is very easy to follow and you are very well spoken! Great pace.
