Can I just say that this is an actual helpful guide that doesn't just talk condescendingly about how you can't develop a style over night, or duh, everyone can draw, you just gotta try, etc. Like, these are actually applicable steps that someone can take to learn how to develop their style.

I completely agree! Everyone just says practice that's it. Like yes I know to practice but I came here for help and that's not helpful lol. Waffles is honestly sooooo helpful all the time 😊
Stephanie Torres exactly! I’m so glad others that need help see it too. “Just practice,” is not helpful!!! After this video, she’s my favorite, and my go to here on UA-cam.
1. Draw something(A human is recommended) 2. What needs to be improved?(just focus on one thing) 3. Look at real life photos(redraw it in the style you used in the beginning photos)(if you don’t see improvement keep practicing)(What waffle recommends is make different shapes from the body or trace the outside) 4. Steal like an artist(Study someone else’s art and see what you like that you can add to make you character look better and try to add it to your character without looking at the photos) 5.redraw the character to see your progress For more detail watch the video obviously
Also, something to note is there is nothing wrong with not needing a reference. Some people are just good at figuring out anatomy without needing to look at it. What she should have said is "If you can draw accurately without a reference that's great, but if you don't it's perfectly okay to use one it doesn't make you less of in artist". Instead she basically shamed people, by basically saying "If you didn't use a reference, you're nothing special".
Remember that this is a shortened step by step as she stated it took her 10 years to develop a style. Take your time people. Learn more and love the art you're doing. Have a good day :)
10 yrs to develop a style? bruh who in the world takes 10 yrs for a art style, it takes about 1 year to learn ur own art style, ik a guy that he said he had been drawing for 1 year and 5 months and his drawings are good, well he draws on his phone using his fingers and he's pretty good at it and i mean it he is taking 10 yrs is just to much well of course it depends on what age u start drawing so the progress goes slow but if ur like 15 or 16 1 year should be enough for u to find ur own art style as u practice day by day or whenever ur not lazy to practice u can advance as long as u set ur mind to it, well i should be the last one to talk considering how lazy i am lmao i wonder if i should stick to practice on female than male...but then again in the future i plan on making my own manga, "nothing is impossible" trust me i also know another guy that his drawings are....not to good i'd say more like very average yet he published his own manga its not popular but he did his best y'know
Ikrrrr everything on my art is a mess. The shoulders are too high, the neck it to small and the head looks like it will fall off, the legs dont quite look right and the torso is a freaking square;-;
Wow! I've watched tons of 'Finding your style' type videos and I love them all, but none I've seen have done such a thorough breakdown and given a step by step process like this. (Admittedly I'm only halfway through the vid so far) but this is INCREDIBLE! I hope every aspiring artist trying to find their style sees this!!! Also woblircle is gonna be my new name for torso XD
Random but : I was drawing in my sketchbook ([trying] to draw a realistic Freddie Mercury) at the dining table with my older sister. She was drawing too, and then she put down her pencil and said, “You know how there are stylistic types of drawing the human face, and how there can be different levels going from cartoony to realistic?” Of course I said yes. And she continues with, “Well, what if instead of what we look like as the most realistic, there was another level of realism. Like a human more realistic than we are. And we just don’t know because we are the slightly stylized version of drawing for them.” And I’ve never been the same since.
I just finished the video I really liked the tips I never saw a "how to find your style" kind of video that helped me that much. I will use these tips when i will have time. I am glad you made this video and i am sure it will help many people. You really made a good video! Thank you~ Edit: woosh i never got so many likes! Thank You!!
@@mamtagourkar323 all right she did when I started watching videos I saw her Channel then I started watching didn't it it made me feel like drawing and it really helped me out and she's really good even making a Stickman
I also draw dragons! I am able to draw people but I rarely look at real life- unless I am motivated. It took a while to draw people again because I drew dragons most of the time- Don’t stop trying though!
I used to have this issue as well! Try drawing the eyes step by step, doing each step on each before moving on. Ex. draw the tops of both eyes, then the pupils of both, and rinse and repeat for each step. I believe in you, go make some good art!!
So many artists say "don't worry about art style" but like... it's a really important topic. You were able to tackle such a difficult subject really well. Thanks!
Well, nobody cares their own ..how many u see everyone copying manga , anime style ? Is annoy and kinda lame. They look the same ...be different and creative! I'm a artist as well
@@Moodboard39 Don't be so harsh on those artists! We need people with similar art styles to achieve amazing things like animation. Sure, I prefer to make something unique too. Developing a unique art style is not only incredibly difficult, but demanding and incredibly time consuming as well.
Ok but like, the 30% opacity thing is genuinely a really good exercise for anatomy and proportions. I printed out like 4 different sheets for it and then applied it to my own art and I can genuinely see some improvement and extremely quickly too.
@@juliasherwood697 I made my own by taking some images from Pinterest. Just find some images that have qualities that you're going for from wherever and print them out. :)
@@juliasherwood697 i normally type in "muscle dude" in google and just take those references for beginning with anatomy and muscle memory. The harder i want it to get, the more casual the dudes will look like. And either you print them on paper or in case you got a tablet, you can just put it in some free art programms (i use medibang paint pro) :)
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen such a comprehensive tutorial before. My art improves very slowly, because whenever I try to learn from tutorials they always seem to assume a certain level of skill (natural enough for a talented artist I think), but that tends to leave me frustrated because I feel like I'm missing a step. I'm in no way a beginner, but the fact that you start at the beginning and go through the various levels of honing a skill, both visually and verbally, makes it super easy to figure out what to do to improve from the point where each individual person is in their process. All that to say: this is fantastic and super useful, thank you!
@@SnSMuNitioNs I do art for fun, if I look up a tutorial I expect to be able to parce it from the get go and I'm looking it up because I need an efficient way to learn a skill. I don't mean to imply that you can't learn from other types of things, this video even highlights how much you can learn from just looking at things around you, all I meant here was to express how approachable this video is as an actual tutorial, which is meant to teach things.
Finally a “finding your art style” video thats helpful! Most of the other videos literally just say “keep drawing” which basically just makes us continue with an art style we dont like. But you actually gave steps to make our art look how we want it 💜 Thank you so much 💜💜
I’m grateful for everything you said at step 3. As a kid I loved drawing and doodling and just the feeling of putting pen to paper, but I always struggled with drawing and never had ‘the gift’ of drawing from memory or from my imagination and told myself I just don’t have what it takes and gave up. I learned about 3 years ago that I have a condition called Afantasia. I literally don’t have a ‘mind’s eye’. And I always believed that if you use a reference you’re not an artist you’re just a copycat so don’t even bother. I’ve been very hard on myself over it. But discovering why my brain needs a reference to work from and now teaching myself that there’s no shame in that has helped a lot. I’m still drawing at a child’s skill level but now at least I’m willing to try. 🥰🥰🥰
Art in any form is simply finding a way to express your creativity, Wether music, painting, drawing. I think the biggest obstacle we face is old expression like your either born with it or not, you can't copy, and archaic teaching methods. I'm 44 and only started drawing a year ago and noticed almost all major artists use reference material, and all have used reference material to grow. Even people who draw nature use the nature as a reference, fantasy characters are still based off human or animal muscle structures and so on. So reference away!
And the aphantasia will make your approach your art really differently than other people, you’d have the advantage of not being influenced by your minds eye! (although you might not believe this at the moment)
@Brianna E. Your comments helped me to realize that I share that trait and have no "mind's eye". I do have an imagination and creativity however, I just start from a different inspiration. I can look at something and imagine it in 20 different small ways and hellaa embellish it in my mind - my creative process. But sit me down with a blank page and pencil and I'm like 'duuuh, what do you want me to draw?' So yes, I greedily use references to begin and then MY creativity kicks in. Thank you for helping me to understand that better now... 🙏
@@creative2716 that’s a beautiful process. 🥰🤗 I think like most things in life, creativity is a spectrum, and once you embrace where you are on that spectrum you can thrive. Creatively divergent. There’s no ‘right’ way to create. Took me a long time to realize it. 😅👌
I love how you don’t just say something like “oh you just have to keep trying” or “don’t worry you will find it one day”. You actually make it so that someone can help improve their art style and know what to do and what to not do, unlike all the other videos that I have watched so far.
“Just draw something” Me: *Sweats profusely in perfectionism as the head (which is just a circle) is uneven and slightly tilted to the right, making me unhappy and feeling unable to continue.* “This is your art style” *Great* “Now find what you don’t like about it” Me: Ever- “And don’t say everything” Me: *Well the paper itself is ok.*
This was a great explanation! I feel like so many beginner artists think way too much into it when its just something you already have and then develop with practice :)
@drawingwiffwaffles OMGGGGG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THE BASIC SHAPES THINGGGG LIKE IM NOT EVEN KIDDING MY ART LOOKS KINDA GOOD (even though compared to yours its like...shit HAHAHAH) but rlly tho thank you
Hi, first I would like to say how much I appreciate your videos and how much joy they bring to me. Second to all the new or old artists out there it’s okay not to have a certain style. Me personally I have jumped in the past years from realistic, to animated, to cultural, to abstract, to graffiti. I have enjoyed all of the, and they have made me a better artist. Don’t feel pressure and just focus on small aspects of art you want to improve on!
I’d gladly pay for the stuff you are teaching. You may not realize but you are helping a lot of people who can’t pay for such splendid lessons. Thank you so much for putting in the effort for us. 💜
My father was a great artist and when he started to teach me how to draw when I was child was through muscle memory of my hand. He made me trace everything in his art portfolio and let me tell you, after doing that for months, your hand really remembers. By the time I was in 6th grade, I was able to draw the old Cola bear you saw on school folders. It was so good that my teacher send it in for a art competition and I won first place. During those times, the Cola bear was not line work but a lot of shading..let’s say I was proud and till this day, I can create anything by simply shading without lines.
I like how you are actually teaching us how to find our art style, unlike every other video I’ve seen on this topic, they just say “it will come over time” and “it will happen naturally” so thank you so much for actually helping😃☺️😄
wow. I was on stage three and I've improved so much its crazy. I've never liked my art and I've spent so many years hating what I create and for the first time, I was so impressed I had brought myself to tears. which is saying a lot for me, I dont cry easily. thank you so much honestly
This is like one of my favorite videos. Since I can't see anything when I close my eyes, this really helped me a lot. I used to describe my art style is not naked stick figures. Doing this exercise I think my first picture is actually the cutest, by step three they're looking a bit more realistic, and step four looks wow! But when I get to the redraw and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself, the drawing of me looks like old Cathy cartoons. Then I tried to draw my corgi and made the ugliest loaf of bread I ever seen. I should practice corgis another day after my brain recharges. Thank you❣️
You are like me! I only learned within the last 5 years I have, aphantasia. Which is the inability to conjure mental images. I thought everyone lived life like this. I felt so much guilt when artist or people would make comments about people referencing or copying art..because that's all I can do, because I can't "make things" up in my mind or imagine them ahead of time. Finding out this is just how my brain works, and hearing waffles and this video, really made me at ease with my drawing. I enjoy it ..so I am back to it ! I'm going to do it for me now .and just try to improve small steps of drawing
most creators just say: "wait it out and one day maybe you'll have an art style you like." you said: "im gonna teach you what they dont so you can be happy while drawing. thank you so much this was wonderful
As a beginner, this is the most helpful video I’ve seen. It’s so easy to understand with the way that you explained it and it’s something that never occurred to me to even try because I have very little experience (read as: I know less than nothing). Most everything I find is geared towards people who already know what they’re doing so this definitely helped me so much by not making me feel like I am an absolute idiot just because I am new to drawing. Thank you so very much for this!
I’ve already over developed my style over nearly 90% of my time on this planet but I will definitely recommend this video to my friends that are getting into it back into art!
You should be a art teacher and do art classes or at least volunteer sometimes, your really inspiring! P.S I'm a young artist and I'm still trying to find my art style
@@katbells6997 I don't really think they were trying to be offensive in any way, they were just trying to say they don't really like they're art (which I bet is amazing by the way :))
My art teacher in highschool used to say the best way to help develop form is if you pay attention to the shape of things!! It made me really happy to hear that one of my most favorite artists uses the same trick!
3 years ago i used to draw stickmen and I was very ‘bad’ at drawing. I have improved amazingly along the years, drawing full anatomy etc. please do following these type of tips ❤️ trust me it works!
I mean. I have been drawing for 3 years or so and I started like ”tracing” drawings. I remember drawing David Gilson’s and I was so proud of what I did. With time I left that behind and started with making pictures of characters (Disney, Nintendo, anime, marvel or whatever) and went on to fanart. Then I started with creating my own and now , that I’ve tried a lot of styles (chubby , cartoon, anime, realism) and mediums I found my own way of making characters. I believe the best way at least what worked on me is learning a bit of everything and once you are confident you do your own mashup of what you think looks best and what you feel more comfortable with. Still I have my copied drawings placed in my wall because they remind me of how I started.
Llama Llover21 thank you I must admit it was a struggle and specially because that’s what i wanna study when I leave to collage. Convincing my family I wanted to study art was really hard😂

scarly._. arts exactly. I found that in the middle quarantine, I have like 12 hours of free time and I need something to do. Drawing has become my hobby and with this video I have developed a great style that I am happy with
This is one of the first developing style videos I totally agree with!! I also wanted to comment a little advice for artists on here that I've found that relates with what you've said. I've noticed that I have periods of time where I'm really frustrated with my art - so I study from real life to see how my perception of that feature can change. If you're unhappy with your art, as frustrating as it may be, it's actually a good thing! It means your ready to improve! Art style isn't this conscious thing - art style is a representation of the way you see things. The more you understand how something actually works, the better your perception will become, which means your art will look better, because it shows your experience. Try to make an effort to draw what you see, not what you think you see! Also - don't get too wrapped up in "style". It's natural and grows with time and studying from life. Hope this helps someone!!
Idk why, but one of my most aggravating moments is picking colors/where to put the colors. Yet I want all the colors. Sometimes it just feels overwhelming. I've learned to grab maybe 10 pencils and just go with whatever I have chosen and it is SO much more relaxing and enjoyable

RANDOM STORY: I had an art teacher in kindergarten who got mad at e for drawing a fish picture "wrong" on accident, and said we had to draw it like he does. In 3rd or 2nd grade we got a new art teacher. One day we where painting birds and one boy in our class painted his bird yellow instead of red like it was supposed to be. The tattle tail of our class told on him and the art teacher said: " . . . art can be whatever you want it to be . . . "And was like WHAT??? I had been told for so long that in art class you had mimic the teacher as best as you could. Then I was cyber schooled and had an art teacher that taught us to draw minions! Now I am homeschooled and am learning something even better from Waffles (not for school).
I’ve been drawing people for many years and every time I looked back I didn’t know how to change or improve upon what I already had, so this was truly much more informative than any art class I’ve taken, thank you so much for this!
May I just say, I am a VERY beginner artist and I have been doing a lot of research over the few years I have been on and off attempting art...but this. This video is the most help I have received from anywhere. I love that you started from something anyone can draw and showed the full process without making it seem intimidating. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. This is so inspiring to me.
I'd say it's plagiarism if you barge in and steal everything. Artist looks at the house and thinks: "dude, it has a nice door. Let's take it, saw it down to the correct size, repaint to orange and use in my own house". Or something. Don't steal any doors, please.
Hi Rin, I am so grateful I found your channel! I have been drawing for a while now and lately have been focusing on drawing a chibi character impersonating my daily life or philosophy and I love doing it! The thing is I get real disappointed when I post my drawings on Insta and get a handful of likes from my contacts, which I know is very shallow but it does bum me out.. so now I am using step 3 from this video, ie using reference to work on human anatomy and poses. Bought some magazines to test it out and can see some improvement already! Thanks a lot for sharing and making it look accessible and doable from any level, it means a lot! ❤
the trace out exercise im pretty sure ive done something similar. this was about a year ago, we had some sort of project at school and i choose norma alvereis and i later found out we had to draw out the person... yeah... i sucked at drawing back then. i took out my laptop found a picture of her made it full brighness and traces her out. she looked beautiful when i did im so proud of it. and damn this feels like an art class but 1000000 times more fun. keep up the good work!
@@betsypost5019 really, if you wanna try and give drawing a chance you should probably pay attention to the fundamentals rather than 'styles' but yeah it could work too!! Wish you luck and hope you have a good time!
Tysm you help me find what I've been missing so long, Thank you so much for all your help and I hope you get better at your art even though your already amazing.
I used to really be into drawing but after some rough times I stopped having the energy to keep it up. I really want to get back into it, but my art feels really embarrassing now because I'm so out of practice and I've missed years of opportunity for improving. It's especially noticeable when I see art from friends. We used to be on such similar levels and those who continued drawing are obviously so much better now and sometimes it feels like I'll never catch up. Your tips are really practical and helpful and make me feel less... bad about it I guess. Especially the reference thing... I was definitely around that "references are cheating!" thought group a lot and while I know it's ridiculous now I still find myself avoiding doing it out of habit. Basically, thank you so much for your videos! I'm a new viewer but I really like what I've seen so far and your art style and personality made me a quick subscriber.
I understand that feeling completely. I spend a LOT of time in the hospital Like 5 months in the past year. Each hospital stay was a minimum of 2-3 months straight. So When I got out I obsessed about the time learning I missed & coming to terms with not being able to get a real art education. The thought of not being able to catch up to my art class peers was paralyzing. Then I read about some of my art heroes & just late bloomers in general. I picked up a few of Andrew Loomis´ books, & found out he was the worst student in his class. In fact, he was so bad his art teacher told him to quit. In ¨Drawing the Head & Hands¨ my favorite quote is ¨Let us get used to throwing away unsuccessful effort & doing the job over. ¨Let us consider obstacles as something to be expected in any endeavor.¨ I don know if collecting quotes will help you, but keeping artist quotes that inspired me helped a great deal.
This silencing your inner critic video was also helpful for me. I wrote down the negative voices keeping me from drawing & answered them with positive ways to overcome them. My inner voices tell me I'll never catch up as well & that I will always be too sick to make any progress. I have to remember that I can´t compete right now, but I´ll never know if I could have if I didn´t try. Lamenting that my work will never reach mastery is a waste of my time that could be used for learning. For most people, 5,10, 20 years will pass whether theyŕe productive or not.
I know this feeling too well, I wish I kept drawing when I was younger, now I'm older and I'm in a decent environment that gives me comfort and enables me to draw, well, by the time I'll ever get good I'll be 30
I hope things are going well. I really empathized with your story. Rough times are hard to survive, but we're always kinda clinging to survival anyways, right? Whenever you feel like giving it a chance, pencil and paper are gonna be there for you. Also, it's not like you haven't learnt anything all this time you weren't drawing. We can often extrapolate experiences and knowledge between skill. It's been around 5 days since I've took drawing again after a long hiatus, and I was surprised to discover that when I was able to physically and mentally relax and enjoy drawing, I was able to recall shapes by memory because of my personal experiences (movies, shows, real life....). In my case, I felt so relieved that all the time I watched anime instead of drawing wasn't completely wasted. That's the first thing that came to mind, and it allowed me to relax even more.
I imagined that. Then I was like: Damn I have drawn all my characters with a completely wrong size. Meh. They are mostly fantasy creatures so maybe I wanted that!
I watched videos about this all night, and, no matter the length was, they all advised stuff like 'don't stress out about having an art style' or 'copy from other artists', but yours is the most unique and the most helpful.
Her: We're gonna look at it and analyze it and figure out what needs to be improved Me: Everyth.... Her: and don't say everything Me: oh ok😔 Edit: omg wow thx for the likes Most I've ever gotten!!
"Good artists borrow, great artists steal" I think that quote is more about permanent improvement. A good artist will draw a character in a pose they found and revert afterwards but a great artist would remember that experience they gained from drawing it to always make their character more dynamic.
This was the first video I've ever watched of yours and ever since I watched this video I've been in love with your channel you inspire me every time you upload a video so thank you
“Art style - a collection of artist inspiration, skill “ I like this definition :) It means that not only what the artist’s drawings looks like at the end, but rather the whole thing overall!
You know after years of having the mindset of tryna have my art look a certain way the way you explained everything made me realize that I have been tryna be something I'm not, for 6 years I've had a character I've wanted to draw but wanted it to be in art style that others do, and now I see that, i never woulda reached that point if I kept doubting myself you've got yourself a new sub and a like, you've opened my eyes and re-inspired me thank you so much
this came back in my recommend and i’d like to thank you. this is the video that got me into art. i was so close to giving up. but thank you, because now i’m happier than ever, and i love daqing so much :)

But you actually gave steps to make our art look how we want it 💜 Thank you so much 💜💜
Mate I agree! This is such a good video

The fact that she is able to draw the same thing over in different styles is blowing me away

I like that this isn't just showing us each step to draw something, it shows us how to draw in our own unique style.
Same.
I believe that's what it sums up in the description
Who else is trying to learn to draw during quarantine
Woah everyone in this comment has been drawing about a year and has a bunch of knowledge I never see newbies
SpaceCat I am trying to, not going so well hope these tips help meh most likely won’t I’m a horrible at drawing ;^;
@@betsypost5019 really, if you wanna try and give drawing a chance you should probably pay attention to the fundamentals rather than 'styles' but yeah it could work too!!
Wish you luck and hope you have a good time!
Me
ive always wanted to knwo how to to draw just never had the time to or didnt think i could
Tysm you help me find what I've been missing so long, Thank you so much for all your help and I hope you get better at your art even though your already amazing.
I know this feeling too well, I wish I kept drawing when I was younger, now I'm older and I'm in a decent environment that gives me comfort and enables me to draw, well, by the time I'll ever get good I'll be 30
Ok, I just saw this person's profile pic and OMG-
U draw better than I do!
It ain't bad man!
And if it isn't yours, then you'll get there eventually.
_I'm not telling you that you have to use references to improve but_

Meh. They are mostly fantasy creatures so maybe I wanted that!

I watched videos about this all night, and, no matter the length was, they all advised stuff like 'don't stress out about having an art style' or 'copy from other artists', but yours is the most unique and the most helpful.
Her: We're gonna look at it and analyze it and figure out what needs to be improved
Me: Everyth....
Her: and don't say everything

"Good artists borrow, great artists steal"
I think that quote is more about permanent improvement. A good artist will draw a character in a pose they found and revert afterwards but a great artist would remember that experience they gained from drawing it to always make their character more dynamic.
No?I disagree miss waffle

“Art style - a collection of artist inspiration, skill “
I like this definition :)
It means that not only what the artist’s drawings looks like at the end, but rather the whole thing overall!
