    I saw Nureyev dance back when I was in college. It is impossible to describe his innate charisma that radiated out over the audience. Such raw power, such personality. He owned the stage, indeed the whole theater. This was not long before he became too ill to perform - I can’t even imagine what it must have been like to see him dance in his prime. It is one of my treasured memories.

    The summer I was 18 I somehow scraped together the money to see Nureyev and Fonteyn dance Swan Lake in a courtyard of the Louvre. If I remember correctly, they got 28 curtain calls. It was a magical night -- the setting, the amazing talent, the music. I'll never forget it. Thanks for this excerpt.

    Beautiful. When I was a young woman, in the late 70s, one of my life dreams was to see Nureyev and Fonteyn dance together live. She had retired by then. I was living in London and went to a performance of Nureyev, so half my dream was coming true. As a special surprise, that was not publicized, and for that afternoon only, I believe, Fonteyn came out of retirement for a performance of la Spectre de la Rose with Nureyev. It was something I will never forget. When he came on stage, the energy buffeted the audience the a physical thing. Together they were something I will never be able to put words to - only feeling. I was so fortunate!!

      You lucky thing! You are making me cry now when I think of the sheer beauty that that must have been. Thank you for sharing your experience. I myself saw Fonteyn dance in Les Sylphides, I think, at a gala on the South Bank in London approx 1982, or was it 1979? Saw Nureyev 3 times - first time in 1973 when he appeared with the Paul Taylor Dance Company at Sadlers Wells, and two consecutive years approx 1982 when he did the Nureyev Festival at the London Colosseum. Was blessed to see him in his famous Corsaire solo - the sort of thing you had to pinch yourself to believe you were actually seeing it for real. And it was an experience I wished could go on and on forever. Got his autograph on 2 separate occasions - in fact he kept my pen to be able to write for everyone waiting to see him. And one of my most cherished possessions is a photo which a fellow fan, but a complete stranger to me, took of me getting Nureyev's autograph in 1973 outside Sadler's Wells. She kindly offered to post me a print 2 weeks later when her pictures were developed - pre-digitalisation days!

    I saw them both in Firebird. I was in Middle School, and it was shown on a movie screen. It was extraordinary. We all sat with our mouths open, jaw dropping down at what they accomplished. Nureyev leapt and flew across the stage, Fonteyn was exquisite. The costumes were orange and fiery and glittered and dazzled. Suddenly Nureyev flew across the stage in a single leap, then he repeated it. Wow!!! He seemed to hang in the air and impossibly long time. My child's mind was in raptures. I had never seen anything like it. I felt overwhelmed with the beauty and mastery of the dance. To this day, Nureyev is the greatest of them all.

    For years beginning in 1973 Nureyev danced often with the National Ballet of Canada. I was 20 at the time and attended his performances every night. At that age I was something to look at myself and, when I met him at a social engagement and chatted, his eyes had an otherworldly sparkle and pleasing intensity to them. It was the gaze of a genius. He seemed as enamoured with me as I was with his talent. My vogue model grilfriend at the time, less so but he remained polite with her. On stage even his off nights were fascinating, and he did have off nights. It is a bit like Picasso. He painted many masterpieces and he also painted works of less interest. No artist is forever at their zenith. Inspiration comes and goes. Still, Nureyev on stage was unique....like Margot Foneyn and Maya Plisetskya. All unforgettable. Some dancers I knew murmered there was a terrible side to Nureyev, which hasn't really been chronicaled. Perhaps it is best that his dark side is overlooked. There is so much good about him that is treasurable.

    Technique is indispensable in Dance, but without expressivity, Art is incomplete. Rudolf Nureyev had that in Him, took the time to live His characters. Emotion is shared, thanks to what comes out of oneself. He had a unique grace, from head to toe. The slower the gestures, the harder the Dance is. He was mastering all His movements. Everything is supple, untied. He was often saying to his pupils: «... Be graceful, right down to your fingertips.» He didn't care if a Dancer could raise his leg above his head. If there was no emotion, the performance was worthless to him. Dame Margot Fonteyn had the same point of view, which is why Their duets were extraordinary.
    To take the time to do every gesture, with accuracy, feeling the music, was Their way of being. Thank you, Master. These memories are priceless.

    In an era where everything is so extreme and extremely contorted, watching the refined restrained and exquisite musicality of an artist of Margot Fonteyn’s caliber is such a relief. What a gift to the soul! One can actually breathe watching her dance. And Nureyev in his prime, OMG! This video is such an example of the beauty and skill that restraint offers. Yes, it’s great that people can do thirty pirouettes and wrap their legs around their ears and all that, but where’s the story? Where’s the relationship? Where’s the dance? What a treasure and gift to our shared humanity, or what’s left of it, to be able to see a pas de deux like this. ❤

    This is my very first time watching any footage of Rudolph Nureyev. I sit here in amazement. He had such control, power, strength and balance. In this clip, I think he may have outshined the ballerina. Is it wrong of me to say such a thing?

    • @chriscunningham8807
      @chriscunningham8807 Рік тому +3

      Fonteyn actually possessed superior control and balane. Her grace complemented Nureyev's animal power and prowess. A perfect yin/yang match as she was calm, cool and self-possessed while he was dominant, hot and brash. Observe her footwork, balance and perfect transitions on point. The strength to perform and control each turn and make the movement appear effortless is amazing. She was the principal ballerina he needed as his mentor and partner.

    Quite a few people have commented that Rudolph seems to “hang in the air“. In fact, it is a very clever technique that he developed and it’s actually an optical illusion. The reason he appears to hang in the air is because, if you look carefully, you’ll see that he lands fractionally after the beat. It gives the illusion of jumping far higher and defying gravity.

      I was told that as he jumps, he then raises his legs higher that what he began the jump with, thus giving the illusion of "floating", makes sense. Saw him and Margot dance together at the San Francisco Opera house when I was in college in the city!! Mesmerizing!!
