    In my opinion, i think the metaphor for Joy is depression and suicidal tendencies in an ever expanding and evolving modern world. Everything is too accessible and too overwhelming and it can be just too much for some people. And she struggles with that, and just wanted her mother to understand before she offed herself. This movie hits on so many topics and themes but that one hits hardest for me. Its also about generational trauma and how each generation struggles to understand eachothers perspectives. Evelyn works too hard and doesn’t have time for her family, but in the end its her numerous experiences that made her strong. She was able to see the beauty of life (mostly via Waymond and his unique strengths and her love for him, as well as the intense maternal love for her daughter that joy could not understand) and use it to fuel her, whereas Joy just hasnt lived long enough yet to see the beauty in life and only sees the trauma because thats all she knows. Heavy stuff.

      I'd also like to add - everyone talks about the laundry and taxes line, but as a chinese woman (i still feel like a child though) with serious mommy issues because she was a single mother who sacrificed EVERYTHING to give me what she didn't have, the depression/suicidal tendencies, the resentment/lack of understanding, but most of all the GUILT displayed towards her mom. "why would you choose to be here with me/why would you choose this". I've never seen it expressed so clearly.

      I think you are right about what you wrote but mostly i think the movie is about the breakdown of the main character, the delusions start after her daughter moves away, her husband files divorce, and mainly, the project she focuseded her entire life, the laundrymat, is going to be shut down. she works 24/7 for this shit to works, giving up all her relationships and when she's about to lose that even after all that effort she lost her mind and starts to have breakdowns and revelations about her live. the everything bagel her daughter stuffs the whole multiverse in is a metafore for her feelings, remeber her mother calling her fat in the beggining?

    A lot of people are weirded out by the hotdog universe, but without Evelyn going into that one she never would’ve connected with Deidre, or come to terms with her daughter’s sexuality

      @dejametenerunnombre Місяць тому

      I think that a lot of that sillyness, like the buttplug/trophy scene, was added to counterbalane all the serious topics the movie tries to picture, so it's easier for the consumer to get into it and get locked in

    • @mattlibra3139
      @mattlibra3139 Місяць тому +40

      It’s also to note that The jumping pad for the Kung Foo universe is for Evelyn to say “I love you” to Deirdre, which is supposedly statistically improbable, yet, there is a universe where she DOES in fact love her, and is in fact queer herself. This can mean that Evelyn across all universes is queer and simply never expressed it except in the most off tangent reality

    • @lafatte24
      @lafatte24 Місяць тому +24

      I love the hot dog universe conceptually. It's applicable to a lot of art as well. Once you get over the distraction (gross hot dog fingers) and actually consider the substance (genuine loving relationship and GORGEOUS apartment despite it being the same apartment as current universe Evelyn's)... it's actually really thought provoking and touching.

      Yeah people glossed over the fact that yeah evelyn found it wierd but learned to adjust, the hotdog universe was kinda metophorical as evelyns character growth, symbolizing that she has accepted the 'wierdness' or anything that comes off as new and odd

    It's strange to think that Everything Everywhere All At Once was originally going to be made about a decade earlier & star Jackie Chan as the lead but it didn't get made then. Jackie Chan is a great actor & martial artist, but after watching the film it's hard to imagine anyone other then Yeoh as the lead.

    • @twist58
      @twist58 Місяць тому +9

      I can definitely see if Jackie were in this movie alongside Michelle Yeoh. But Ke Huy Kwan was also brilliant too.

    idk if anyone’s mentioned this but the bagel and the google eyes are opposite- yin and yang, black and white with the opposite color dot in the middle.
    the bagel (yin) is dark, painting life as being hopeless, devastating, nothing matters, with just a sliver of good moments (the white dot) sprinkled between. even when those good moments are there, they’re overshadowed by how overwhelming and desolate the world is. yknow, existentialism, nihilism, despair. this ties into how I interpret Joy/the bagel, which is primarily a reflection on depression and suicide among other things.
    and then you have the googly eyes. the inverse, and a symbol of Waymond. throughout the movie he is constantly teaching Evelyn that you fight the darkness by finding the mundanely beautiful. the yang is white with black in the middle, a representation of the fact that although there are dark moments, life is overwhelmingly good and enlightening and worth living.
    I honestly cry whenever I watch this movie, even when I’m just thinking about it sometimes- as a young queer person with a rocky relationship with my mother it really hit home. it’s also just a visually stunning and masterfully crafted film.
    feel free to correct me or comment on any of this with any of your opinions lol, I’m totally aware this might not be the most educated take bc I’m not super knowledgeable about the concepts of yin and yang, that’s just sort of what my mind associated it with in combination with the movie

    • @synitive2915
      @synitive2915 Місяць тому +9

      Yeah I like that joy is "nothing matters so we should just give up" and evelynn is "nothing matters so why not try"

  • @itsjustme4479
    @itsjustme4479 Місяць тому +26

    I love the contradicting nihilism, jobus philosophy is there's no meaning to life, what's the point. While waymond on the other side represents the positive side, there is no point, but we can do whatever we want. Both being represented by opposing symbols, jobu with the dark bagel with a white middle, and waymond with the googly eyes, the same shape of the bagel but with the colors swapped. I think this movie is the perfect mix of philosophy and generational trauma 💪🏽

  • @twist58
    @twist58 Місяць тому +25

    Now THIS is how a multiverse themed movie should be written! While comic book films by Marvel and DC have had their share of that concept for years, EEAAO is a non-comic book film that wasn’t convoluted as people expected it to be. All of these events are merely a metaphor from Joy’s personal experience.
    Rightfully earned its Oscar wins, especially for Michelle Yeoh! Phenomenal work.

    From the eternal dance of optimism and nihilism, to the youth dealing with having everything everywhere all at once at the tips of their fingers to the complex struggle and duality of 1st and 2nd and even 3rd generation immigrants, this move is love and sadness, this move is what it mean to be a human, Single handle the best most important film ever made but at the same time its lighthearted and doesn't take itself too serious, Tis the struggle to be a human. We put value in whats important and what matters. You are important and you matter

    Great Reaction!
    I saw this in the Theater and cried my eyes out. Normally this type of reaction to a movie would keep me from going back to watch again where everyone can see me get so emotional, but with this one I didn't give a shit, I went back and watched it 2 more times (3 total) and then bought it as soon as I could.
    The husband was played by Key He Quan who played 'Data' from the movie The Goonies. He gave up on acting for the past 40 years due to a lack of opportunities for Asian actors. His Oscar acceptance speech is worth watching.
    The Mom was played by Michelle Yeoh, known for stuff like Crouching Tiger and Crazy Rich Asians.
    A couple fun facts you might appreciate:
    1) The budget for this movie was a tiny $25 Million... and then according to 1 of the Producers, they were actually able to pull all of this off for only $14 Million. Freaking Insane!! There were days where Jamie Lee would rent food trucks out of her own pocket to feed the cast and crew. On Hot Dog Fingers day, she rented a Hot Dog Truck. LMFAO
    2) They filmed this movie in only 38 days due to the COVID lockdown that occurred. Also unbelievable but true.
    3) OFC it won every Oscar, but some ppl are pretty pissed Best Supporting Actress went to Jamie Lee instead of Stephanie Hsu (the daughter). The explanation is that the Academy was doing a 'make-up award' type situation since they've never given Jamie Lee an Oscar. I also agree it should have gone to Stephanie.
    4) The S&M guy who gets spanked is played by one of the Directors (Daniels). The 2 'butt plug' actors are actually the stunt coordinators in the movie. Anyways, great reaction and thanks for reading if you've made it this far!!
