  • Hello everyone, and welcome to the Sarasota Square Mall in Sarasota Florida. The mall began life in 1977 with JCPenney, Maas Brothers, and J. Byron's as anchors as well as a 6 screen movie theater. More changes would come in 1979 when Sears would join in at Sarasota Square Mall. The mid 1980s would see J. Byron's close for a new food court, and an expansion for a Parisian. However in 1996, Dillard's would take over the Parisian, and Mass Brothers would be converted to Burdines. In 2002, Westfield would take over, and would rename the mall to Westfield Sarasota Square. A major renovation would take place in 2006, and that would also see a new food court and larger movie theater, and Macy's take over the Burdines name. However, 2009 would see Dillard's close. This space would be demolished for a new Costco. However, 2014 would the Mall at UTC open, and many stores would move out of Sarasota Square for the newer UTC Mall. 2017 would see Sears and Macy's close at Sarasota Square. Today, Sarasota Square Mall is owned by Torburn Properties and is back to its original name. The mall currently sits at less than 10% occupancy, with an uncertain future. Let's take a walk through Sarasota Square Mall in case if we never see it again!

My wife and I live in Sarasota close to this mall we go about every other week. Currently the Costco, theater, and JCPenney are the only locations left. Even the man cave/ pinball/pool game store has closed across the walkway from Costco. Plans are in the works to convert to apartments.

This mall was bought a few months ago by a development company. Plans include razing the mall but retaining JCP, Costco and the movie theatre as freestanding structures. A new open air lifestyle center will be built with restaurants and some shops. Additionally there will be apartments and office buildings added.
Sarasota is booming right now and the mall’s location sets in a very desirable and upper income area, specifically Palmer Ranch.

This mall is a piece of Sarasota's history. So many fond memories there, from Babbages to Dream Machine. It's really a shame, but UTC, Covid, and Amazon killed this once booming social hub. RIP Sarasota Square Mall.

@@jm37024 I’m there now, finishing off a Costco pizza. JCPenny, AMC Theater, and Costco are all that remain, along with a small Taqueria and German food vendor in the foodcourt across from AMC. More and more of the mall’s getting taped off, although the Costco seems to be consistently filling one of their side parking lots.

All the plans to renovate are on track and I bet within 9 months the old structure will start coming down. Agree this area is booming and only 4 miles each way N and S to two world class beaches. It will be a premier place to live and shop.

As a Sarasota native, this was the place to be on a Friday night growing up in the 2000’s. Everyone met up with their friends or crush here and would go on shopping sprees, and hit the AMC movie theater after. I’ve been since it’s become more empty, and it’s sad to see how deserted it is. Whatever this mall ends up becoming, it was a super nostalgic and memorable place to hangout at growing up as a teen.🤘🏼

This is one of the first dead mall videos that actually made me feel a bit melancholic. The first hot topic I had ever gone to was in this mall around 2006-07 ish, and being a tween-ager from Small Town FL, this was a big freaking deal. My best friend's family took us all to see Star Trek on opening night in that AMC in 09, and after a doctor's appointment one day, instead of taking me back to school, my mom let me drag her to see Ninja Assassin. (She didn't like it for some reason.) The last good memories I have of that place were in December of 2015, a few months after my dad passed, I ended up getting as many Christmas presents for my mom that I could afford at the time, and I took that same best friend from 09 with me to see the premiere of The Force Awakens. There was a Sbarro there that gave me a free slice of pizza once too. Thanks guys. Seeing Sarasota Square in this condition is just a monument to fading memories. Hopefully whichever firm bought this mall can turn it into a place where people can continue to make good memories, instead of watching something old fade away.
I did actually return to Florida briefly last year, and took a trip to this mall, and had about the same experience as this video. I walked down each wing, visited the food court and saw the one open restaurant, wondered how the owner of the restaurant's money laundering scheme was going, and decided to bail.
Thanks for all the good times, Sarasota Square. Thanks for the video, Andrew.

It should be made into a housing community for a mix of medium and low income people. Large stores can be turned into multiple units. It could be a wonderful place for families, young singles, and retirees to live together. I imagine some stores would become doctors offices, a daycare center, grocery, etc. The common spaces could have various activities and spaces for social life. I'm not a developer, so I don't know if it's feasible, but if possible it could be the answer to our affordable housing problem. The excess parking lots could have more apartment buildings so the very long waiting list of HUD applicants could have their needs met, too. I have a vision of what it could be, but not the means to make it happen.

I used to work at this mall. I would walk through the exact same entrance you did every 5 days a week. Walking in going to your right then the second store to your left was a best buy mobile. It still has that best buy blue there. I would open and close. Alot of kiosks through the middle of the hallways were there. The traffic was way different the last time I was there in 2018 working. Still not insane. I remember saying to myself, "This mall is slowly dying" my last few months there

I live in Sarasota too, I hate how they keep building more condos for people from out of state to move in without building more businesses for us pre-existing locals to work for. They somehow don't understand that there already seemingly isn't enough jobs and the roads are always congested because of overpopulation. Lived here since I was born in 2001 but now I almost dream of moving away just to escape the stress of having to leave the house 40 minutes early just to go 10 minutes up the street because I get worried I'll be late from how nuts it's gotten.

The Crossings at Siesta Key, DeSoto Mall and obviously Sarasota Square Mall are the largest that are quickly closing. Here in the Tampa Bay Area… my wife and I stopped going to the malls because of all the out of control teens that ran rampant in the mall yelling and acting up. We loved going to the indoor malls but one by one they started closing. I really loved the malls during the holiday seasons because of the electricity of the season. It seemed like everything was at the mall including movie theaters. You mingled around people and could actually speak with people in person and not by texting. I hope one day indoor malls come back and younger people can experience the joy of an indoor mall.

This was one of the more upscale malls in the sunshine state. Seeing it like this is really unbelievable and sad. UTC is just a fraction of what this mall was. Oh and another thing about this mall the traffic access was very well planned out unlike UTC which a 4 year old could have done a better job designing.

I really liked this mall. I preferred it over UTC because unless you like Apple products, there's nothing at UTC mall but purses, makeup, women's clothes, and women's shoes. Plus UTC mall has ruined that whole area: it's gridlock 24/7 365 now. Oh well, good for the mall I guess.

The reality is that in most, but not all cases; the mall is dead. Malls in successful places will do well. We have several malls here in Las Vegas that are somewhat non traditional in that they cater to a tourist customer rather than the local market. Who wants to drive to the Strip to shop at the Fashion Show, the best local all-around-mall. The Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace which I understand is one of the top grossing malls in the whole country by sales per square foot. There is Crystal's at City Center, another high end place but not huge. The "local" off Strip malls all pretty much suck. The Galeria at Sunset in Henderson, a dump, Meadows Mall, "Ghettos Mall" old decrepit and just sucks. The Boulevard Mall, the first enclosed mall in Las Vegas - just don't. Lastly, near my home, Downtown Summerlin - a topless mall started before the great recession and languished for nearly a decade before construction resumed going from an enclosed concept to topless. Nice, but nothing to write home about. Dillard's Macy's and an Apple Store. The rest is the same stuff we've all seen before. The two department stores are smaller format with a limited selection.

this mall was so weird to watch die, for the longest time they had one vendor in the food court and then none making costco the only food option. I dont understand why the university mall replaced it as its mostly upscale stores with little charm.
