This is like watching Bob Ross walk you through an NES game.
I was just thinking how much like Bob Ross this was
Yes, a pure delight!
Seriously, this was really enjoyable to watch.
"Eggplant" = "Phthalo Blue"
“Uh oh, the truck have started to move. That’ll be our little secret” lol
Here's a devil enemy... let's beat the devil out of it.
Had no idea there were SKILL levels. I just played the game, but was never able to max out. So cool to learn this 35 years later.
Thanks, Henry! That skill stuff is pretty weird- before i knew about it, it just seemed like the upgrades were random.
From Kid Icarus to Super Mario! Neat
This game is actually super fun when you know what everything does
Yeah that helps
@@cr-nd8qh A little
i wish i knew all of this back in '87. i never saw 2-1 until now.
Glad you got to see it, Luna!
You and me both. I remember using a password from Nintendo Power to get to the final level, and along with the first group of levels, that's all I had ever witnessed until now.
@@Ivegotwormsinme “ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGELS”
@@danielgbgibson That's it!
There's something beautiful about the replayability of old games. I'm glad I found your channel!
Couldnt agree more! Thank you!
play is at its best when its simple, games have gotten way too complex these days
@@Bjorick I get your point but you could argue these older games are more complicated in some ways, yeah the game play itself isn’t but a lot of the mechanics like upgrading and experience points are much more cryptic. I don’t even think it’s a bad thing cause we have the Internet today but I would find it frustrating if I played it when it came out
After 36 years, I have finally beaten Kid Icarus for the first time because of this video. Everyone I knew played this game, but I don't think any of us ever made it past Stage 1-2. I never knew how much was involved in this game, the different level designs, the level up systems, or what the damn items did. I never thought I would see the day! I'm a recent subscriber, but I've watch a few of your videos now and they are a treasure. Thanks, man!
Level 1-2 is by far the hardest part of this game. If you can get by that, it just gets easier. This game is one of the best games ever made. It's a damn shame it never got a real sequel.
@@SuperN1ntendoChalmers Kid Icarus was developped by R&D1 team (Toru Osawa directed by Gunpei Yokoi and Satoru Okada) only a few months before they started a much more ambitious hardware project: the Game Boy. Therefore it wasn't developped by Miyamoto's team (R&D4) which will be dedicated in developping softwares for Nintendo a couple of years later when it became Nintendo EAD. Toru Osawa will then join that team and will later become the script director for Zelda Ocarina of Time.
But yeah I agree with you, it's sad Kid Icarus hadn't any sequel as this game had a huge lore potential for further expansions.
1-2 and especially 1-3...whew. Somehow I did it back in the day without leveling up. After that its easy. I never knew about leveling up😂
You're like the Bob Ross of NES my dude. I found these videos because I wanted to see all of Metroid without playing through the OG version, which is notorious, but I'm watching all of them just because they're relaxing and enjoyable to watch. Thanks!
"Kid Icarus is based on Greek Mythology. So you've got your flying buzzsaws, goofy sunglass spiders, medieval grim reapers, eggplant wizards, Metroids, and the Rolling Stones logo. Also, Medusa is now a cyclops Bart Simpson and also the devil."
🤣🤣🤣 Very LOOSELY based on Green Mythology, lol.
Sounds right to me.
The rolling stones enemy is named Mick
this needs to be the official description on the box, or i guess purchase page
This comment made me laugh so hard I hurt myself. I laugh hard.
Here me out Silver Surfer for the NES. I want to see if you can keep your voice just as soothing while playing that insane game.
Thanks!! Silver Surfer is one Ive been practicing, its no joke!!
I just got the 1cc on SS yesterday (hence here looking for my next nes game challenge) it’s tough but the difficulty is definitely over stated; it’s a memoriser, apart from 1 or 2 random moments everything is the same every time you play, you just need to learn what’s coming up. It’s also a really fun game when you master the mechanics, the nerd gave it a bad rap 🙂
I only just realised those specknoses are literally those silly glasses with the big nose. Well played Nintendo!
That would be an incredible feat!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames If u can beat that one (without going insane), that'll be an accomplishment!
The early game in Kid Icarus is the game at its most frustrating and least fun, at least until you can level up enough to survive. That's why "Look, just use my password" is a valid part of the walkthrough.
That level grind can be pretty unfun, and then I found out the passwords didn't work on Switch, so I had to do it again. The sacrifices I make, lol
@@UCanBeatVideoGames hzx ZX XSFPL9
@@UCanBeatVideoGames They don't work on the stock NES Classic either. >:( But if you mod it and add the ROM, you're golden.
I get a very relaxing Bob Ross vibe from this channel
I was thinking the exact same thing. It's like if Bob Ross taught how to beat games instead of painting landscapes.
I think its really cool to be compared to Bob Ross. That guy was a legend. Thanks!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames You're a legend.

Kid Icarus was the first NES game I ever bought with my own money as a kid. It's still one of my top 5 NES games, and I played through it countless times. I really appreciate how thorough you were in this video.
Wow. My knowledge of this game was truly abysmal, no wonder I’ve never got past world 2 as a kid. Good video!
I always thought level 1 was impossible as a kid. Thanks for watching!
I bought it from a pawn shop that specialized in video games and I only beat it because the password for the last level was in manual
I don't think I passed 1-1 as a kid. I borrowed it, and didn't give it much time. Looks more fun how he does it.
@@mragin Ha! Nice.
@@mragin it don't need to be so difficult. We just make it so. Nice to see someone master it.
I remember beating this game a long time ago but never knew about many of the mechanics of the game: skill points for strength levels, score points for health upgrades or even the intimidation options. As a kid, I'm sure I just opened the game box quickly and tossed the instructions to the side. Thanks for providing a thorough walkthrough/explanation of the game.
thank goodness for being able to watch videos on a higher speed, youll need it here.
This was the 2nd game I owned and the first game I picked myself from the store. It was the box art that sold me. The silver box and hot pink letters. The game was hard as balls. A teenager down the street helped me beat the first dungeon and it was smooth sailing after that. An all time fave.
Once you get through the beginning, this game really picks up! Thanks, Paul!
Hmm. Almost like real life :)
Okay I have beaten this game alot of times back in the day but I did not know that there was a perfect ending! Now the wife will see the awesomenes of Kid Icarus for some hours! Thx for the video.
Thank you for this, i got into this game again from playing the Kid Icarus challenges in the Nintendo World Championships and i cant stop playing!
One of the very first video games I ever played, over 30 years ago. Just beat it again two days ago. Still holds up for me.
Cool vid. Brings back memories. One trick, when you’re on ice, if you press up Pit will stop on a dime and not slide anymore.
Absolute childhood favorite. Beat at least a dozen or more times in my life and I thought I knew everything thing about this game hands down. Nope, I was wrong, I had NO idea you could intimidate the shop keepers. That would have been SOO helpful as a kid. I would grind a lot for hearts in most levels, so I was always on top with the powerup arrows. I always wanted feathers, but they were to darn expensive and I did not know the patterns to the treasure chambers, so it was like winning the lottery if I actually made it to the final pot and won an expensive item! The memories. Great channel, just discovered it a few days ago and I absolutely love it.
Thanks to this video I could finally beat the game after 30 years in my original NES. Thank You!
when I was a kid this game was so incredibly hard to play...now it makes me want to try it again :)
Thanks for this, it was hard to understand when I was under 10 first playing this. Now I know how to win. Much more understandable than the Legend of Zelda.
So true! This game is much more straight forward, just need to get through the beginning. Thanks, Ryan!
3 Years later you still are helping others clear the game!
This is like the time when I bought a videogame magazine and read the entire walkthrough of a game that I don't own just to "experience" it but 100 times better haha
Thanks!! 😀
Thanks for explaining about not pressing down on those platforms 72 times. I'm kinda rtrded so it takes me hearing the same thing at least 65 times before I understand. You are the best!!!!!!
I’m so glad I found your channel. You thoughtfully cover all aspects of these games down to the minutia! Perfect for a gamer who grew up with all these titles, but still struggles to this day. Kid Icarus has always been the bane of my existence!
Your channel reminds me of retro game youtubers from 2010 to 2013, so you’ve earned a sub from me 👍
Thanks for the sub! I loved those kinds of videos, so I'm glad to bring it back!
I bought this game used when I was a kid, with no instruction booklet and no such thing as internet. We had quite a summer trying to trial and error all the items and gameplay. The barrel took the longest. Had no clue about intimidating or how exactly we were increasing our health. Activating your weapon upgrades i thought required full health since that always ended up being where i was at. The treasure room tricks or the skill levels, just assumed random and I don't remember even having that fifth blue one. Yeah, those empty rooms were head scratchers!
Awesome video!
Your "definitely not Metroids" comments near the end were hilarious. Great walkthrough!
This game is so epic and mature. It felt so overwhelmingly hard so im glad i get to see you play it so masterfully. It is a special game. Almost biblical or something. Magic, Angelic for sure! How great thou art.
Any NES game with music by Hip Tanaka was always fun! Awesome video that took me back decades to when I last beat this one! I didn't know any of the tricks you showed so it is a mazing that I actually beat this lol!
I’m on vacation and now it’s even better, relaxing in a big bed and watching this gem. Only thing is the beginning made me miss my little pupper :(
Thanks, Bryan! It is always a little bit bittersweet to be having a nice time on vacation but to have to leave the pupper at home. I'm taking him with me to the beach this summer, it's going to be fun!
i really loved this game.... played it sooo much back in the day.... hearing that theme tune brought back heaps of memories
i used to watch my friend play. he and his dad had a strategy figured out for money and power up. iirc, enemies appear, you kill them, stay right where you are, another set spawns, repeat. eventually they stop cycling, so you continue on once they stop. old school grinding. :)
Was introduced to Zelda, Metroid and Kid Icarus from my cousin. He would bring the games over early Sat morning and we would just play the games while eating cup O Noodles and get some ice cream from the Ice Cream trucks. We would just chill and take our time to enjoy the games.
For Kid Icarus I know it takes 50,000 pts to get the 3rd bar but it was just a chore for stage 1-1, so we just get 20,000 so we can get the 2nd bar. And on stage 1-2 get another 30,000 to get the 3rd bar.
There were a lot of secrets with the game especially jumping from the top left side and ending up on the right side. Didn't know about the sliding move you did on the stage 1 boss to pass the brick wall. That would save so much time.
If I'm not mistaken, I THINK you can wait around inside a store after you buy something, and the shopkeeper will allow you to buy from a new set of three items. It's been a couple of decades though.
That totally does work! It loads up new items and everything -Thanks, JC!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames you can also bargain with certain shopkeepers with a certain button combination on controller 2 to lower the prices if I remember correctly. The cocky shopkeeper will raise his prices though.
@@PawsumGaming Yeah, you hit A + B simultaneously on the second controller, and depending on your power rating the merchant will either raise or lower his prices.
Thanks to you, I’ve finally finished this game! Hardest part by far: Level 1 when you’re weak and have no power ups.
Hmm i recall back in the day, in the very start of the first level is a shop, with really useful items that you have no hope of ever having collected enough to buy - but if you held down a certain set of controls it allowed you to buy the item on credit, and then pay it off with later collected funds. (it was something like up or down or something and you could buy it anyway even if hearts go negative) It was in a strategy guide i had back in the day, but so far all i can see online about that trick is the a+b lower price trick. It tended to make things difficult in later shopws however if you had not paid it off yet, it became a handicap.
I just love this game
I’ve seen your videos recommended for years but never clicked until now because the name of the channel sounded stupid. Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find that your videos are not stupid but rather informative and nostalgic.
Palutena: "There's the box with the Three Sacred Treasures!"
Pit: "Huh. It's a lot less pixelated than I remember it"
Great info! A good tip I always use is in level 1 fortress after you get to the hot spring room you can go to the right 3 screens and keep killing the skull enemies and fill up all of your hearts over and over and then go to the shop and buy bottles until you have the max of 8. Then you can get 999 hearts and you can leave the fortress with full hearts and full bottles. If your health goes down just go back to the hot spring and fill it back up as you collect the hearts over and over.
That's smart! Having 8 bottles makes you just soooo hard to kill in this game!
It's amazing the angel references made it past Nintendo's own obsessive censorship. I'm amazedicus (Sorry, sorry. I LOVED Captain N as a kid :D)
Kid Icarus will always be my first love. I am so sad they’d never made part 2 or 3 like Mario or contra
played once or twice but didnt care for first level mechanics, after going through your guide never knew side scrolling on game. A hidden gem, great game, thank you for the guide
This is the first game I ever bought with my own money as a kid. Saved up my lawnmowing money and was so happy I picked this game
I only every got to the first Fortress as a kid and always got stuck as an eggplant. All your info up to there about skill points, score, sacred treasures... even down to intimidating the shopkeep etc... I literally never knew. The joys of growing up with games in the 80's huh?
Would love a HD remake of this game but with the ability to go back and forth (like a Metroidvania).
Yep. Kid Icarus is indeed a game I can beat. Glitch-free and with the kiss from Palutena, too. -We're going to ignore the fact that, because I never played it before, I was watching this video while playing through the game on my Nintendo Switch over the past few days.-
Not gonna lie, that was the most sweaty 1-1 I've ever seen.
No doubt!
i loved this game. I beat it once when i was a kid and i was so excited. loved it.
I could honestly watch this video again, and I think I just might
My god, what an incomprehensible mess of a leveling system, LOL. No wonder 9-year-old me couldn't make it past the first palace. Thanks so much for the in-depth commentary and editing you put into these, man. Hoping you get to Solomon's Key - another classic NES game that tortured me as a kid. Cheers!
Oh wow, thank you! I played this game as a child so many times. I managed to beat it, but never got the best ending. I’ll also never forget the code which was written in pen in the game manual from the store I rented it from: ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGELS!
I almost mentioned that code, but I was worried it would cause confusion because it doesn't work on the Nintendo Switch version. No idea why they messed with the password system - very weird!
This game is a classic…but my god it gave me nightmares as a kid for how damn hard it was. Thank you so much for making my childhood’s bane possible to beat after 34 years of playing this beast!
This game is one of the best examples of the "Nintendo Hard" trope from that era. Particularly because the game *immediately* hits you with a series of super-precise jumps, where if you miss and dont have a feather (and you probably wont) you'll have to start a very long level all over again. And then you get even more really hard jumps like that over and over and over... most platformers take at least some time to build up to the really tough jumps, but this one just does it from the start. I'm betting a ton of players back then found themselves stuck, unable to ever reach that first fortress. And then there's the very hard to get healing items, constant enemies, spikes and lava everywhere, and entire game mechanics that are just never explained. As much as I just adore retro games, it's easy to see why game design in general tended to push away from that stuff, even in indie games modeled after the old retro style. Well, usually games these days try to avoid that stuff, not always. You still get games like Dark Souls that just go "LOL do the last 2 hours over again because that hidden zombie just pushed you off a cliff".
Yeah it is so strange. This game is mystical. They know something about life. Made by some kind of angels, maybe.. half gods.
This is probably one of my 3 favorite channels on youtube, keep em commin sir, good work!
Your calm voice and incredible skill remind me of the speed runner, Arcus.
"Remember, if you get turned into an eggplant, you have to go all the way back to the hospital." That's solid life advice.
Eggplant wizard ur grindr tag? Impressive brudder.
Thanks mate you are a legend for this help and other classic Nintendo games. A am a older gamer and love playing classics on switch and a have been watching a few of your videos and they helped me big time so nice one you legend. Respect from old Scottish gamer.
If you just made a video game historical documentary, I would watch that.
really enjoying your channel, i grew up with a win98 pc, psone/n64 and a colour gameboy. i did play some games on my brothers nes & snes but those were extremely difficult for me as a kid, the only game i could play without too much pain was smb3 & smw. your channel has shown me the beauty in 8 bit gaming. seeing these games on the nes explained, i can now appreciate the depth and gameplay loop in these 8 bit classics.
This was the best walk thru ever! Thanks for all of your hard work!
Thanks! Im glad you enjoyed it!!
I loved this game as a kid. I did beat it without all the fancy items and glitches.
This has always been one of my favorite NES games. I didn't own It growing up but I borrowed it from my cousin all the time.
This is late as hell but I just played it on the switch using the nes game player. Literally cannot thank you enough dude you made my life easier by explaining everything!! I had so much fun playing it! I enjoyed the music so much too but lmao since it was my first time it took me like a couple of extra hours😂.
This guy has the most soothing voice.
1:17:57 Really good tip here. So frustrating getting eggplanted in this room just as you're nearing the end of the fortress.
Another great one. Informative and fun. Keeps me looking forward to your content. Also, ICARUS FIGHTS MEDUSA ANGELS to go straight to the end.
Thanks Doctor Teeth! That password also gives you unlimited health bottles - pretty sweet! It doesn't work on the Switch, though, for whatever reason.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Or the NES classic. :( Well, the stock game won't work, but the ROM does.
Loved this game as a kid.
THAT IS INSTANT DEATH. Im thoroughly amazed at how limited information came with some of the most early popular games. I didnt know what I was doing in this game... I just went around shooting things. Just seems like the theme to early nintendo days was to gimmick the first level so you can overpower the rest of the game. These vids are really interesting.
I love your videos! Played many when I was younger but not everything. So watching your videos shows me what games I missed. :)
Glad you're enjoying it! Thanks, man!
The video I have been waiting for my whole life! Thank you!
Man. This game was such a big part of my childhood.
I played this game back in the day. I had more satisfaction beating this game than any other because of it's difficulty.
This is one of the first games that I remember having to grind immediately just to be able to play.
There were a few NES games like that. If you didn't realize that you had to grind before you actually started, you had no chance. Fester's quest comes to mind.
In highschool, I would come home ffrom baseball and play kid . I ate a ton of sunflower seeds while playing back then and the whole time I watched this video I could almost taste The David Sunflower seeds.
YaY ! I remember This game being super hard, thank you for conquering it with us :)
Thanks for watching, Eddie!
I just got destroyed as a kid and never came back.
This may be my chance.
1:24:56 Biggest surprise for grade school me was that these sirens were depicted topless in the manual. lol
I once saw an article describing Kid Icarus as one of the toughest videogames ever made. That made me smile as I recall beating this multiple times on a single playthrough without dying.
It seems hard at first, but once you get going its not too bad at all! I'd bet whoever wrote that article got stuck early on and never pushed through to the later parts.
I always called Pandora "Stay Puff's Head".
🤣🤣🤣 i can totally see it!!
When there's somethin' wrong... in Palutena's sky... who you gonna call? Kid Icarus!
I couldn't make the character name "Pit" work here, so I used the game title instead. XD
One of my all time favorite games.
Love your channel! It brings back a lot of great memories. Real good stuff!
Thanks, Nat!
The programmer of this game must've been a genious!
Love the channel, like everyone else…total nostalgia! Tip for beginners (if any left), pressing UP will stop you from sliding on ice. That is all :)
I remember that old open the bags a certain way trick in an issue of Nintendo Power! Lol. Helped a ton.
Just to clear up any confusion regarding your treasure room strat:
When you say ‘count up your hearts’ and refer to the chart, what you mean is actually ‘count up the hearts you’ve revealed in the treasure room after you’ve opened the first 3 chests’ (bottom right, top two on upper left) - not how many hearts are in your possession. Quite possible I was the only person confused lol, but thought I’d share anyway!
Great job as always, always looking forward to your next video!
Best retro channel on UA-cam
Thanks, Wally!!
I always use the second Ganewmede (the tan ones) room in the first fortress to get my total score over 200,000 points, going back and forth between the hot spring room and the room, and occasionally, if I have a barrel, going up and through the loop again to cash out at the store, filling up my barrel with Water of Life.
This is my favorite game. Loved this as a kid and replay it at least once a year as an adult.
Just finished the game with some of your advice. Thank you very much! 🎉 Never knew about the Skill-system when I played the game as a kid.
this is the kind of video ive been looking for, i remember all these games from when i was a kid but i never beat them or finished them 100%, keep up the great videos!
I wish I had more friends to tell about your channel, people need to see this
Thanks, Chris! Even if it's just you, I'm glad you're enjoying it!
You mean you have A friend...what's it like? Lol.
There was aLOT to this game I didnt know. I just remembered how difficult it was beating it the old fashioned way
Played this game as a kid a ton. Even had the nintendo players guide. Had no idea about what the hammers were for. Or the experience points. I got pretty far. Got turned into an eggplant in that big dungeon got lost couldn't find a hospital and that was basically the end of my playing this game.
I was lucky enough to get a NES maybe a year or so after it initially released, and my first 3 games I got after the pack-in Mario/duckhunt cartridge were Zelda, Metroid, and Kid Icarus which in retrospect is pretty incredible. And I played the hell out of these games, but for whatever reason Kid Icarus was always my favorite of these games. Maybe it was the greek mythology, the character designs, the music, the cryptic RPG aspects or likely a combination of all of these. But still to this day I mourn that we never received a kid icarus title on the SNES, I bet it would have been incredible.
10:31 The best strategy is use the Mcgoo loop to get 220,000 points, then go through the door. You should have a full size health bar. You can fill it up in the hot spring of the first Fortress.
I beat this game a few times, and still enjoyed replaying it
One of the many games I loved from when I was a kid
Your voice is very comforting.
