it was just like the 613 commandments of the Torah were made to create a woman to hold the Christ, all the music from cavemen to Bach to Led Zepp was created to prepare the way for Ariel Pink 😉
First impressions 1) Strange Fires is such a better opener than GKMBGU. A much better introduction to the Doldrums and to Ariel Pink. 2) The songs feel less hidden in the Pink Wall of Sound. On one hand, it lets the guitars and R-E-L's songwriting shine a lot more. On the other hand, this mix doesn't *always* have the same ethereal sound that the final product has. (I would still argue that the haunting is mostly present in this mix) 3) Obviously I like the expanded album's tracklisting better, but these songs make the most sense as the core of the album. Don't Think Twice and Unreleased (Theme from Claris Gardens), while good songs, aren't as tight. 4) Bobby Pyn is such a quintessential Doldrums track that I forget that its not from the original. It feels wrong to hear Envelopes Another Day without it following. 5) I like EAD but I don't think it would be my choice as a closer; I think tacking on either Bobby Pyn or Campfire + Young Pilot Astray would be stronger, but I guess at that point you might as well listen to the whole expanded album
Ur right the guitar is more present in the mix, it’s especially notable on doldrums. Other versions of it is very heavy on the eerie synth sounds and screeching but here you can really hear the guitar strumming and it actually changes the feel of the track a good bit
It's the most egregious example, for sure. Apparently the song being one long fadeout was a total accident, Ariel says he didn't even notice until the album was being remixed for Paw Tracks!
@@ViewbobTruelol that’s funny. I wonder if it had something todo with how the mix is. I will say having the guitar be more prominent, the synth feeling less sharp and the overall mix being a bit different makes this doldrums feel less audibly abrasive than other 2000’s era versions of the album I’ve listened to. And I think that makes the fade out actually feel more natural and less noticeable when the song starts to quiet down. It’s like going into the fade is less of a “drop off” here because you were already starting out with a more even and gentle sound. Idk tho that’s just what I hear, I only have experience playing instruments and tweaking the sound in real time and not with mixing songs and producing and stuff like that
wow this sounds even better than I would even imagine. listening to this after a huge hangover is absolutely incredible, my ears have been blessed with how clear this is, how good the original mix is, so glad you were able to buy this CD!
Holy shit (Haunted Graffiti 7), Viewbob! You've done it again. One of the gem channels of this whole site. Truly a gift to the AP community, even Ariel himself has made use of your knowledge and hunting skills. (This is Xingabus btw, this is one of my channels.)
No. Effing. Way. And I thought it wouldn't sound as good as it does... this is so cool! It's a lot clearer (considering that this disc was made when the recordings were fresh)... never stop doing this, this is awesome!
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE DOLDRUMS REALLY ARE TO ME?
Who's going to be at Ariel Pinks recently announced tour 🙋
Raise your hand if you support an abuser
I hope so!
me in mexico city lol
I flew to Denver to see him this tour, as it was the closest city he was touring in to me. It was my first time seeing him and it was 100% worth it.
What if this is the best thing we will ever hear? What if all the music ever created was made in anticipation for this recording?

This version of The Doldrums song is heavenly
I wanna cry, this reminds me 2020 vibes
Me too, dawg. Me too.

This is the best mix of this album - this is like an unearthed relic
The Doldrums track in this version is the true orgasm that I never achieved
I read the description, Ariel got kicked out of school when he turned this in as his thesis?
IIRC he got kicked out for painting a mural of the faculty having an orgy.
This is historical!
Hope we can find more of these, Maybe vital pink
I'm hoping this brings it more publicity! Long form video on Doldrums coming soon, which will cover this aspect heavily.

Everything Ariel Pink releases is GOLD...
Thanks for uploading !!
IT'S GOLD, JERRY!
@@ViewbobTrue Why do they call it Ovaltine? Everything involved is round, the container's round, the mug's round. They should call it Roundtine.
