I've had this yoke on my Model Y since June - have to say I love it. Makes driving with Autopilot and FSD much, much more comfortable when keeping tension on the steering wheel. Simply resting my right or left hand on the bottom flat section allows me to drive long distances without being nagged to grab the wheel. Always found the round wheel an awkward angle to hold for Autopilot. The little nubs at the top right and left make it easy to one-hand most turns. The alcantara feels great also.

Chris, you didn’t need to transfer the heater module. You could have just used the whole OE cover facia with the metal scroll wheels. That’s what I did with mine and ironically the my yoke came with the metal scroll wheels and I wanted the original ones. Btw, no one should ever cross there arms like what Steph did in her first turn exercise. I typically turn with one hand. Typically holding at the bottom outer corner 7:00 for R turn and 4:00 for left turn. If I need a full lock turn, only then will I use my other hand to assist in the wheel turning as needed. Btw, most larger radius turning do is just pushing down on the top corners up to 100° of rotation as needed. When I on AP I just rest a couple fingers on the outer positions of the lower bar. If super comfortable.
@@DirtyTesla South central Wisconsin. Almost straight west of you as the crow flies. But seriously, just use the plastic facia from your wheel. It’s an exact fit.
The BIG difference between the Model S/X and Model 3/Y is steering ratio. The 3/Y have a steering ratio of 10.3:1 so it’s very quick, meaning it requires you to turn the wheel less when turning. Whereas, the Model S/X is 14.0:1 so it’s noticeably slower. I think the yoke is much better suited for 3/Y than S/X because of this reason. Ideally, Tesla needs to add variable steering ratio if it’s going to be switching to yoke in all cars.
Have they maybe changed this for the new S/X? Full lock in a 3/Y is 1 and a half turns each direction from center and the S/X I 'thought' was about the same now. :)
@@VoxelLoop unfortunately no, it’s still has a steering ratio of 14.0:1, with 2.3 turns lock to lock, Motortrend confirmed this when it tested the model s plaid. I can’t imagine model X being any different.

I feel like the best way to turn 90 degrees or more from a stop or at very low speed is to do what I do. Assuming your turning left, you grab the right side of the steering wheel (3 o'clock) with your left hand and turn the wheel (just like you did at 10:22)
Chris, thanks for the intro to your yoke! I'm particularly interested since I'm on the list for a CyberTruck - if they ever decide to build the damn thing! Does Tesla use steer by wire? If so, tuning the steering ratio should be relatively easy to better match the yoke. I wish automakers would just introduce a joystick and eliminate the wheel & pedals! Mount it in the center console and it would be great for swapping drivers on a road trip.
Thanks for the review. I took a performance driving school once and the instructor said to keep your hands on the wheel for turns and not use the overhand turn method if at all possible....just what the yoke forces you to do.

I was thinking of putting on the yoke as well as putting an aftermarket heads up display. Would Tesla mind? Or should I wait until the warranty is over? Thanks for all your videos. You seem to address many of the things I think about.
Warranty is effected by whatever you modify. So Tesla will not cover anything that happens with this wheel and perhaps airbag related things, even though the airbag is the same. But if you need any warranty work, you can just put the original wheel back on before you go in for the appointment.
The extra visibility is nice. However, I believe a yoke without adaptive steering is a mistake. Without stalks, bigger mistake. I am not getting the s/x because of it. I hope Tesla wisens up.

Now that Tesla offers the round steering wheel option for the New Model S & X I'm curious to know how much of the display to the right will be covered up by the top portion of the steering wheel when installed? I definitely like the unobstructed view of the DIC in front of the driver and the whole top half of the center screen while using the yoke but at what cost to safety? I believe the round wheel would be the safer choice and one that we all know how to use, but I'm finding it difficult to decide between the safety in which the round wheel provides and the openness while using the yoke. Just a note about materials from someone who's been there, suede is a great steering wheel material in race cars, where a gloved hand finds lots of traction and grip, but needs a good bit of TLC to stay nice in a street car. Dirty hands and lack of maintenance will eventually turn suede back into smooth leather. Sorry if this is something you already knew, don't mean to insult your intelligence here :)
Na you're good. I thought about it but did 3 minutes of reading and saw it can be cleaned and some wheels do use it so I went for it. My other choice was perforated leather but I figured those holes could get dirty too 🤣
I reached out to Hanshow to ask if they have an option for a regular wheel retrofit for the new Model S. I would give the Yoke a try but this is for my dad. We'll see what they say.
Hanshow responded and this is what they told me. "2021 Model S plaid steering wheel , we do not set link because there is two option for you 1st if you can send your original yoke wheel, then we will produce and send you round steering wheel, the price is 1000 USD 2nd if you dont want send yoke wheel, we can made and send round wheel, the price is 2000 USD"
@@DirtyTesla I would consider the 1st option because it looks like it would be a custom order. The question is how long am I going to be without a wheel? I didn't pursue it further because we are still waiting for the car the be delivered. We got an estimate for June 2022 delivery date.
If you drive at 9&3 and refrain from removing your hands from the wheel, sort of like a racing driver, it would be a lot easier to maneuver for most use cases. Only time it would be weird is at very low speeds like a parking lot.
yes I don't get why people don't like it. and people say 'what about when/if it slips out of your hand' and i'm like *why* why would it slip, you arent holding it if it can slip.
What you can do is when you receive the new Model X switch the yoke on the model X for The regular steering wheel on model 3 and you keep new one for model 3😀
I’m surprised that nobody has anything to say about Alcantara without gloves. Usually it gets funky and matted pretty quickly. You may want to grab a suede care kit to be able to brush it back out after it gets a lot of skin oil on it.
Try finding an empty car lot and see if you can emergency hard swerve. I definitely think you will find having your hands palm down will set you back and stop you from being able to turn enough for an emergency. Being safe is better than comfort in driving straight. Emergency test needed! :)
So after watching this I started placing my hands on my round wheel (model Y) at 9 and 3 and below. It's a bit awkward at first but I want to get used to this practice before I get my Cyber Truck. Then if we keep the Y after the CT arrives, I probably will go with the Yoke conversion to keep both vehicles similar Thanks!
I ordered the elipses with Matte Carbon. It’ll be awesome as I wait for cyber. I’ll have a video of the install and look at the carbon finish. I’m so stoked for the yoke. Used your code. OMG the discount. You rock man.
I loved everything about the new model S, but after driving with the Yoke I will never get it. I will keep my 2018 model S until they offer normal steering wheel.
I ordered almost exactly the same yoke steering but got it from a vendor in China but I was able to pick the option of metal scroll buttons (in addition to the steering yoke material, heated option, etc). I noticed resting one hand on the lower part of the yoke exerts the right amount of steering pressure to not trigger the autopilot/FSD nag!
The typical tesla response is first you hate it, then you love it. Or at the very least, you just get used to it. Remember all the crying everyone did about the screen, re-gen, speedo location and god knows what else??
You have an adorable family! And I will probably want to convert to a round wheel if I get a CT. Aftermarket will probably have that covered by then! Lol
I think the yoke on the 3/y is the best of both worlds.. given how awful the capacitive buttons on the X/S are! I love this and I'm planning to add to my model 3!
Had mine installed and so far, it's freakin' fantastic!!!!! Had it installed at a shop....which....they claimed it took "3 hours to do!" LMAO. (they were charging for labor by the hour so, guess it made sense for them to take their sweet time!
Yep, looks ridiculous ;) I just think it doesn't do the job as well as a wheel does. Sure if FSD was fully working and you rarely needed to drive by hand I can see how it would be better but daily driving is simply going to be a worse experience (albeit one you no doubt get used to).
Thanks, yo! I'm doin' my best! I got caught up once not really too long ago and got behind again. Has Steph tried it again since your video of her trying it?
IMO I am still torn over the yoke, especially on the 3 & Y because there’s. No instrument cluster. I guess I need to try it before I get the model S.My only other issue is you can’t maneuver it quickly in case you need to avoid an accident or animals on the road ( like a 🦌 deer),
10-2 hand position is superior for steering control. Modify to 9-3 with yoke. Using bottom of wheel or yoke diminishes driver ability to react in emergency situation.

The Lil hooks at the top on left and right aren't just for show. Those can be used from the inside to hook the wheel and spin it 360 with one hand easy peasy. That way ur not doing the hand over hand maneuver
Are you still lovin the yoke or thinking of going back to the round steering wheel?
Still using it and like it way more than I thought I would!
I love the Yoke in my 2021 MSP........But then again it's the same almost as the jets I flew for 30 years at the Airlines (-: On a side note, I have many friends that Will Not go with me if I use Beta 10.5 (-:
It's good that you are happy with the new steering wheel (I suspect most regular viewers would have been surprised if you hadn't been). But next time, maybe you could thank Stephanie for her help and honest inputs - during the video. Just a thought.
I think I would LOVE this . However, I'd have to try it for a few weeks before I could commit to it at this price. Resale would also likely be less so factoring in reversing it when I sell... Prob not a purchase.
It's hard because you can't return it. But correction, the discount code is 30% for a limited time
@@DirtyTesla 30% "almost" makes me want to get one just to try.

My other choice was perforated leather but I figured those holes could get dirty too 🤣
Great video! Can we use the stock front cover to just make the heating work?
Yeah you move the wires over.
Fun video to get you and your wife used to the yoke
Yes!
I totally would!
Do you think the 3rd party "autopilot magnet" would fit on this steering wheel?
Just ordered mine for my model 3 😁
I reached out to Hanshow to ask if they have an option for a regular wheel retrofit for the new Model S. I would give the Yoke a try but this is for my dad. We'll see what they say.
Yeah I'm in the same boat. I'd need a full model 3 wheel replacement with stocks like that one guy did. I'm sure it voids everything though.
Email me dirtyteslayt @ gmail I might have a link for you ;)
Hanshow responded and this is what they told me.
"2021 Model S plaid steering wheel , we do not set link because
there is two option for you
1st if you can send your original yoke wheel, then we will produce and send you round steering wheel, the price is 1000 USD
2nd if you dont want send yoke wheel, we can made and send round wheel, the price is 2000 USD"
@@dont2care8channel that is pretty expensive but I can't imagine the yoke wheel is cheap from Tesla either.
@@anthonyarcher7268 That is correct. lol
Your wife's reaction to FSD beta is very similar to my wife's reaction lol.
Also would you still order it after using it for a while like you have?
Eggscellent yolk video. Actually learned something.
Waiting for mine to get delivered!
Do we know if S/X with OEM yoke has more aggressive steering progression? Like I suppose it should with yoke. How many turns from left dead to right
I don't know, but I know people ask for it so if it's there, it's not enough in most people's opinion.
Try finding an empty car lot and see if you can emergency hard swerve. I definitely think you will find having your hands palm down will set you back and stop you from being able to turn enough for an emergency. Being safe is better than comfort in driving straight. Emergency test needed! :)
That's so cool, love the yoke, love innovation!
Enjoyed your "not an install video" install video!
But time stamps at least!! lol
So after watching this I started placing my hands on my round wheel (model Y) at 9 and 3 and below. It's a bit awkward at first but I want to get used to this practice before I get my Cyber Truck. Then if we keep the Y after the CT arrives, I probably will go with the Yoke conversion to keep both vehicles similar
Thanks!
CT! Wow!👍
Wife reviews are the best.
I ordered the elipses with Matte Carbon. It’ll be awesome as I wait for cyber. I’ll have a video of the install and look at the carbon finish. I’m so stoked for the yoke. Used your code. OMG the discount. You rock man.
First yoke in a 3/y I've seen that actually looks good
Absolutely hilarious seeing you turn on beta as soon as you get in the driver seat hahahaha
That's always the way on or off camera lol. And yes I wanted it to look pretty stock but alcantara seemed very nice. Perforated was an option too.
I loved everything about the new model S, but after driving with the Yoke I will never get it. I will keep my 2018 model S until they offer normal steering wheel.
Have to agree. Love the new S, but I hate the yoke.
"what does that even mean?" Omg the lolz.
Hello, I have a 2022 Y heated wheel performance which Yoke did you get. Seems like a bunch of added things. What did you order? Thx Tim
My spec: Alcantera grey, No, No, Yes, No, Model Y, Ellipse, wheel bottom without leather
And yes I'm still really enjoying it!
@12:40 the purpose was too look badass lol… i like it! 👌👌👌
Yuuup
You have an adorable family!
And I will probably want to convert to a round wheel if I get a CT. Aftermarket will probably have that covered by then! Lol
Lol sounds exactly like my wife hating when I turn on fsd.
Does the entire yoke heat up including the side vertical parts or just the bottom horizontal portions?
It's mostly just the bottom. I was annoyed at first, but I grew to like it as when my hands get too warm, I move them to the sides, and vice versa.
I think the yoke on the 3/y is the best of both worlds.. given how awful the capacitive buttons on the X/S are! I love this and I'm planning to add to my model 3!
Have the Yoke for one month , the only advantage is the wider “ open filed “driver’s view I’ll change it back soon
Had mine installed and so far, it's freakin' fantastic!!!!! Had it installed at a shop....which....they claimed it took "3 hours to do!" LMAO. (they were charging for labor by the hour so, guess it made sense for them to take their sweet time!
🤣
How is that alcantara after this long? They're is a nappa leather option they sell. I've been looking for some insight or wear , maintenance and etc.
great vid interested to see fsd on it
I have been officially want a yoke in my truck
omg please do it. Viral video for sure.
Stephanie needs her own channel. Keeping it real. I love it!
Well done Steph!
LOL! My wife has the same level of impatience with the current state of FSD beta style of driving.
Yep, looks ridiculous ;) I just think it doesn't do the job as well as a wheel does. Sure if FSD was fully working and you rarely needed to drive by hand I can see how it would be better but daily driving is simply going to be a worse experience (albeit one you no doubt get used to).
I didn't believe I'd like the yoke. I'd probably adapt by experiencing it myself anyways. Seeing this kinda helps.
I was surprised how fast I got used to it and now I prefer it. Nice job catching up on the vids!
Thanks, yo! I'm doin' my best! I got caught up once not really too long ago and got behind again.
Has Steph tried it again since your video of her trying it?
Does the airbag rely in any way on the shape of the steering wheel? I guess I'm asking if there is any reason to make special airbags for the yoke.
Your wife is exactly like mine when I turn on FSD. She looks out the window and cringes! :)
Since it appears to be bottom heavy for not being a fully round steering wheel, does the car assume hands are on the wheel the whole time?
No lol but I've thought about that...
IMO I am still torn over the yoke, especially on the 3 & Y because there’s. No instrument cluster. I guess I need to try it before I get the model S.My only other issue is you can’t maneuver it quickly in case you need to avoid an accident or animals on the road ( like a 🦌 deer),
wonder how the air bag works now with no support behind it
I have a model 3, and would this void the warranty or void supercharging if tesla saw it, like at service or something.
No
@@DirtyTesla thank you !
Does it void the warranty?
It looks pretty cool, DT! 😀
Played to see the yoke. Wound up really just witnessing the exact thing my wife would do/say.
10-2 hand position is superior for steering control. Modify to 9-3 with yoke. Using bottom of wheel or yoke diminishes driver ability to react in emergency situation.
Funny how wives have lots of hesitation with FSD. Mine hates when I turn autopilot on. No FSD beta available in Canada 🇨🇦 yet. Just a few fortunate folks got it so far.
