Hey guys! I luv you HR! Btw I also have a trick shot channel inspired by you!!! I am a pretty small channel so it would mean a lot if anyone that reads this could please check it out and maybe if you think it cool maybe subscribe? I analysed the best drop of the lot. 11:20
Timed the shot at 12:11, running it at 0.25x speed. Measured the time from the ball entering the frame to the impact. and then the time from impact to the smaller ball exiting the frame. The former took 5.05s, and the latter was 4.51s.
11.11% more time before impact than after. Which means it's speed after impact is increased by 11.11% or by a factor of 1.11. A 45m drop translates to a speed of 30m/s, (Air resistance would be negligible, and in the last couple of metres the speed can be assumed to be constant.)
So, you lads achieved a speed of around 33.33m/s after the impact. (119.99km/h or 74.56mph for non metric users)
That's 33.33m/s but with a significant component of the velocity in the horizontal.
If anyone's interested... hell, if anyone even comes across this...
Edit: Aerodynamic drag in this case will be quite substantial, and not negligible, like I previously assumed.

I'm not sure air resistance is negligible. The terminal velocity of a falling sphere is given by the weight, density of air, cross section area and drag coefficient: sqrt(2.m.g/d.A.Cd)
For a 12kg ball about 45cm across, that's sqrt(2 * 12 * 9.8 / 1.27 * 0.16 * 0.47
)
sqrt(235.2 / 0.095) = sqrt(2476
) = 50m/s

Attach them with a needle, so they stay together, give them some spin with a vertical axis so they stay vertical.
They need to be both on top of the other and touching upon impact to work better, I really think you can do even better after seeing the higher ones!

Heck, even some weak adhesive. It just has to be enough to keep them from separating during the fall but weak enough to break away when it bounces.
Yep, I thought a short sewing pin, but a weak adhesive would do too - maybe double-sided tape.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Literally just needs to hold for the drop and the momentum should break them apart easily. Let’s get a round 2 boys!!
A pin or needle would work best. Since it won't hinder the bounce at all. It'll fly off perfectly. Adhesive is a bit tricky on rubber

As other have pointed out, using something to keep the balls in contact until impact would improve the results, probably quite significantly. Something like double-sided tape, sticky tack, or possibly a pin (maybe a pin in one ball and a sleeve for it in the other), all might be decent options. Just something strong enough that the turbulence of the air going around the big ball does not pull the smaller ball off, but weak enough that it won't seriously restrain it's launch velocity.
And then you might be able to use more than just two balls stacked on top of each other. :)
You might want to also weight the larger ball slightly so it falls face-down.
I was going to say just wrap a rubber and from the big ball around the small ball and weaken the band. That way it stays in contact but snaps from the impact
Use a sewing needle. Half in one ball half in the other. Keeps them together.
And a couple of fins on the big one to prevent it from rotating

Technically the ball can bounce at most, a bit less than twice the initial height, but it depends on the initial height
No Name so if you dropped it from 3/4 up in the atmosphere (and somehow managed to line up a perfect bounce) could you send a ball to orbit?
For future attempts, what if you tried connecting them with a small pin/sewing needle? I'd guess as the bigger ball doesn't seem to rotate much, it should keep the small one perfectly lined up in the middle without flying about in the slipstream. Then when it hits, with just a small needle connecting them, it should release and send the smaller one off without much resistance, and not damage the rubber bands much.
Or if they were small enough, to drop them through the tubes at the top as well for more consistent results (though it could maybe be too close if it flies straight back up). No idea if any of that would work, but seems like it could work?
cwaddell or just a small piece of modeling clay would work I think.
I was thinking a little bit of glue or double-sided tape, as the forces tending to move the balls apart will be pretty gentle, right up until the cannon-collision when it hits the ground. A pin or needle (drawing pin / push-pin) might be a good option as it could be either pushed-through a band from the back, or just taped down on to the big ball.
I don't think it works if the two balls are joined up, there needs to be a small gap between as what creates the momentum is the larger ball returning up as the small ball is coming down
@@darstellar I think it actually works better if the balls are touching when they hit, especially with these rubber band balls since they compress some. To further reduce randomness, they could setup a pipe at the top with a pin at the bottom to drop them out. It will hit the same spot on the ground every time then.

No you can't. The curve you are seeing actually comes from the camera lens. If that was the planet's curve, the entire circumference of the planet would be barely bigger than Australia.
I wasn't going to comment since you posted this 2 years ago but then I saw the other reply so I figured I'd add some more information:
At 44 meters - the height of the tower - you can't see the curvature of the planet. The effect that makes it look like you can see the curvature comes from the lens on the camera. To see the curvature of the planet, you'd need to be a lot higher - you'd need to be at an altitude of about 9 to 10 kilometers to actually see the curvature of the planet. What the height of the tower does provide is an extended horizon, which actually does let you see past the curvature of the Earth, just in a different direction than you'd think.

A square of double sided tape, but, if it's too tacky, then reduce tackiness using fingers (finger grease) or a little sprinkle of sand or adjust size of tape square, so its JUST tacky enough to hold them together till it strikes the ground..... Just an idea... If Scott holds the big ball with both hands from the bottom, someone else maybe could place the small ball on top and balance it with just a finger? That way, Scott doesn't have to worry about holding both balls, he can just focus on releasing his hands from the big ball simultaneously. I think this would increase the accuracy of the drops and allow the smaller ball to simply "fall" as opposed to trying to be "dropped".

Try to spin the rubberband balls on its equator when you're dropping it! Think of it like a spinning bullet/projectile. My guessing is that you'll be able to hit your target a lot easier that way!

All these things introduce a resistance that is impossible to account for. The only design that would predictably work - at least to a workable degree - would be a toothpick like structure the prevents lateral movement between balls but allows longitudinal movement freely and basically without restriction. There would still be restriction, but the introduction of such would be able to be calculated with an idealised model of such an interaction, framed and calculated by it's practical implementation (which is what is on display here). I think these guys must be doing a physics degree or some such for the content they release. If not, they should. A lot of applied physics fits their areas of discovery.

So guys, for dropping these heavy balls without spin you could hook 2 Sticks to the crane on one end of the sticks while holding the other end of the sticks on the tower. Put the ball between both sticks and to release push both sticks apart.

I'd recommend putting a bit of double sided tape on to hold the balls together, and also using either a tennis ball or a "high bounce ball" for even higher bounces

Couple other things you could try to go bigger
1) Lightly glue them together so it breaks free on impact
2) Put magents under the surface
Or some tape would work too

I think they have to separate for it to work because the big ball needs to be on the way back up as it impacts the little ball
@@oblivionpro69 It doesnt really need room. Separating might help but it definitely works without it. Because of how things compress the ball will be on its way up when it launches
Stick a cardboard tube to the big one and let the smaller one sit inside that. Russian doll style for may balls. Just gotta gat a drop without spin.

You should try a scorch tape ring to hold the top ball in place for the drop.
You guys should revisit this, but try spinning the top ball as you drop it it will give it more stability in what you call the slip stream

You should try gluing them together. The glue will crack on impact, but might keep the balls together until then.
Wouldn't even need that, just a small piece of chewed gum, it only needs to hold the ball from top of the tower to the bottom.
So they’d have to do that before every drop?

I’d recommend wrapping the outside of the smaller balls in brightly colored rubber bands, might make finding them in the bush a lot easier.
Just went back and watched the old Bowling Ball vs Duct tape vid. You guys should do dropping stuff onto like, a net made of rubber bands and see what kinda bounces that creates!

To help with the alignment of the two balls you could try a thin thread tied between them. It would break on the bounce and only disperse a small amount of energy.
Them catching the ball ducking in and out of the slipstream at 7:46 is an amazing demonstration!
Attach the second ball to the first with a short thread. It will easily break when the second ball bounces. 🤔🤓

Try creating a sort of egg holder thing to nestle the smaller ball into, but have it be large enough not to interfere with the rebound. I think that would help get the rebound to go straight up.
If a kite tail were to be added to the trailing ball would It help the ball stay centered in the slippery stream?
They should have just attached the small one to the big one with a really thin band - it would easily snap when it hit the ground and make it go vertical.

Probably a silly question/suggestion, what about just a little bit of sticky tack/blue tack/mounting putty? It may provide enough stability to keep the smaller ball centered without being too sticky to where it would not launch?
U guys should have put a bit of duck tape between the ball so it can stay on while it’s falling and it will just release with the impact.

By looking frame by frame you can work out initial velocity and get a pretty good idea of the ballistic trajectory. With a little more work you can estimate the wind resustance
I wonder if it would work well to tie the smaller ball in place with a light thread or rubber band, something that’s just strong enough to hold it in place on the way down but breaks easily when it bounces.

I'm Scott Johnson and this is Science with Johnson. What you need to do is put some fletchings on the big ball to keep it from rotating. It'll fall straight down, which is what you want so that all of its kinetic energy is converted to linear and not angular momentum after it bounces.
Then, put the small ball right in the middle. The air resistance on the big ball will slow its fall and the small ball, shielded by the big ball, will experience no air resistance and sit directly on top of the big ball.
A bounce with no spin and the small ball directly on top is what you want.

Just a suggestion,
Use a toothpick to attach the balls together.
If that doesn’t work, try some tape.
just a tad of double sticky tape might keep them aligned for the drop

Best way to do this would be to hammer a rod into the big one so it looks like a popsicle, then stick pvc or something similar in the smaller balls so they can slide freely up and down the rod. This ensures the balls will stay centered, and you could even stack them multiple balls high!

the physics behind the ball staying in the position in which it was dropped is pretty simple. It is because there are only two forces acting on the balls once Gawson lets go, which are gravity and drag. The force of gravity is working to pull the ball directly down and drag acts in the opposite direction or motion, and because we know the force of gravity accelerates everything at the same 9.8ms-2 the two balls will not be bumping into each other, as they will always travel at the same velocity.Therefore there should be no forces acting on the two balls two change it's horizontal velocity, meaning their velocity relative to each other is 0, so there would be no need to worry about them tipping over and changing position.
