I decided to film a quick video about a question I received from a subscriber. His PT Cruiser will not crank. PT Cruiser Starter Relay? No Crank? Skim module? Ignition Switch?

These PT Cruisers! My wife's was randomly not cranking. I just replaced the starter last winter, so I was 95% sure that wasn't it. My voltmeter showed it had 12.6 amps, so the battery was fine. I checked the grounds -- all clean. Then I took out the battery and found a LOT of corrosion caked on the positive terminal. I cleaned that up with steel wool, lubed all the connections with dielectric grease, and put it back in. BINGO, it started right up!
I looked under my hood and saw tons of white corrosion on my pos. terminal. My starter just clicks. Good battery. Freshly charged and still just clicking

Had exactly the same problem: No Crank. Relay good, Power Fuse good, replaced the ignition actuator which was DEFINITELY BAD, when re-assembled STILL NO CRANK! Discovered that the FP/ASD (Fuel Pump/Auto Shutdown) 20A fuse was blown! Other online sources suggested checking the #13 Power fuse, but never mentioned that the FP/ASD fuse could cause the same problem! Took us 2 days and lots of frustration, but that one cheap fuse made the difference!
Yea buddy your car different from the car in the video..you have the 1st generation. PT Cruiser. There is no ASD relay on gen 2 with the TIPM
So thankful for your vids, showed me how to replace the gearshift cable. After I got all that done I went to start it and it just clicks once then I get nothing. My battery is pretty much new
This solved my problem! I had a no crank on my 2005 PT turbo. Strong battery so that was not the issue. I pulled the IOD fuse out for about 10 minutes then plugged it back in and the car cranked right over. You saved me a lot of money my friend! Thank you JT!!

Hey there! Love your videos! I have a 2006 PT Cruiser and to get help is very hard, specially for a women. My PT Cruiser will crank but won't start either and my gas light is on and continues to stay on even though I have gas in it, I'm still at a loss. Ugh!! I will check my starter relay though.

Hello, first of all thank you for all your videos bro, I have a 2005 pt cruiser non turbo automatic, I have been having no crank issues intermittent, sometimes it cranks no problem other times it takes 5-10 trys with the key until it cranks, to me it seems like the ignition switch but I wanted to know what you think? PLEASE HELP!!! I have a 06 Pt turbo, just died on my daugther at the light. Changed cam sensor and crank sensor( crank was a pain in the ax)still cran but no start. I believe it might be the pcm but don’t know where to find. Please let me know where to go or if there’s something I can do before purchasing a pcm. Much appreciated and happ holidays
Hello my friend. Exactly why do you believe its the PCM? There are a lot of things that will cause a car to not start. You need to take those steps into finding out why. Now, start with the basics. Any fuel pressure? Do the engine spin over fast as if timing belt broken? Any of these could be your problem, are there any fault codes?
I accidentally removed the gas pump relay, Autozone wanted to see what it looked like. Thought it was an ac relay for turbo 2003 PT cruiser. The guy took off with it and went to lunch. I left without it. Now with relay back in , cranks, starts, shutdown in gear. ??? Ac doesn't have relay in turbo??
Is it also possibly no start no crank relatable to no spark relatable to those relays
my 2002 pt cruiser does that...intermittent start but when i turn the key when it isnt starting everything comes on but it wont crank or turn over. It usually eventually will start but sometimes it takes pushing the brakes...turning the key enough to unlock the park so i can put it in neutral..i have tried lots of things but i am not a mechanic can you please help
Hello my friend, first off can I get you to subscribe to the channel so I can get it to grow, thanks...Now, from your post, you left out needed details such as if you hearing a click when you turn key to start...I need to determine if the starter getting power and just not turning engine over, if so, its simple..You will need a starter but this has to be verified first.

Hi. Thanks for all of your videos! I have an 2006 Pt Cruiser. The car starts but after driving with lights and AC on, the car bucks and coughs while idling and the battery light comes on. The battery and alternator have been checked and are fine. I replaced a multifunction switch because it was draining the battery. Also, the oil light kept blinking so I replaced the oil pressure switch and the oil light went away. There isn't a check engine light. Do you know what could be causing this?
My friend, one thing you need to check that can cause this is a restriction in the ac high side..A orfice tube restriction can give off those symptoms and also a cooling fan can drag your car electrical sys down everytime it come on..The low speed fan could be pulling to many amps out the sys causing that drag at times..You should get that checked..I hope you are subbed to the channel, thanks for watching.

How bout zooming in closer and actually pointing to the exact one. The idea of watching the video is to know exactly where to go and not mess around guessing which one you're pointing to. But I'm guessing you know this already.

I had left the radio and small lights on overnight, battery died. Now I recharged it, but at putting it back, the alarm is on, the horn and the wipers, and touching the minus makes smoke out of the connection place to the battery. I press the alarm off, doesn't show anything, it's light was not working from before even. I put the key in and turn, doesn't recognise me. The alarm is on. And the problem is no electric comes to the dashboard. I checked the fuses, are good, these with 5 or such connectors I don't know how to check. IDEAS ?

Hi JT, have an 06 convertible touring, turbo, been having a u0101 and p0700 code, only symptoms present is blinkinv boxes around the P,R,N,D indicator on cluster, also intermittent no crank only when boxes are lit, when boxes blink back to just P, car cranks but cuts off as PRND boxes light. Not sure what it is, thanks
hey bud, thanks for subbing..Listen, u0101which i think means theres no communication with the TCM..You must have bus communication with the TCM..This could be causing all your problems..Now, US market TCM's are built inside the PCM so theres really on 1 module that control both trans and engine functions..without seeing data thats supplied by the proper scan tool, it will be hard to see what module on line and which one not..You may end up replacing the PCM, if you get it used, it will have to be programmed to your car

Hello my friend, first please consider subscribing to the channel for me, thanks...Listen buddy, if your can not starting after you gave some body a boost, theres a likely chance that you you cross sparked it your electrical system..It could have been for a split second..You gonna have to get that TIPM inspected for fault codes if this is a 2006 or higher PT

You could be security locked out. Any codes in the SKIM module? Are you subscribed to the channel?

@@OnlineMechanicTips Somebody had the vehicle before me and had a copy of the key made not realizing that the PT Cruiser uses a chip/transponder key and now the vehicle will not start. It gets power but there is no click when I turn the key. I disconnected the immobilizer to see if that was the issue and it wasn't. The only other things that I can think of are the starter relay, skim module, ignition switch, or the ignition actuator.
@@BIGBLOCK5022006 The key will have to be programmed. Wiil the original key work? Now there is a test at the starter relay you can do to see if you even getting the signal from the ignition switch. Hey bud, you still not subscribed yet

Thanks for broadcast! What's a skim module on a 2005 PT cruiser touring non turbo 2 4L? I'm getting no communication to OBD2 port car Stalling... on a 2005 PT Cruiser non turbo and 02 senors low P0031 & P0037 voltage I replaced them but clear and they come back. Could it be an intermittent ignition switch not working at full voltage and in turn not sending 12 volts to PCM...in turn shutting down Fuel pump relay and ASD relay then everything has low voltage. Relay are working and fuses not blown. Can an ignition switch work to start the car but not put out the right voltage and lose communication with computer?

I have an 07 it cranks barely but the battery tats out if I jump it it'll start and sometimes it starts without jumping any ideas my mechanic husband doesn't know enough about them and is at a loss

I have a 2009 pt cruiser. I replaced the battery and seemed like everything was going fine . A couple days ago I started my car and it seemed like it was losing power and my lights went dim and it stalled. I was parked . But I thought it was because I haven’t drove it in days . I drive it around for a while and all of sudden no communication from my odometer . No mileage no RPMS . It doesn’t tell me what gear I’m in . And it reads a code NO BUS. And mow my car will not start at all and has no crank. Please help me , I just paid for this car not to long ago

I replaced the battery thinking this was the problem, but it now has lights that come on the dash board and the radio,etc. However, it won't crank when I attempt to start it. Could it just possibly be that I need a new starter? Or could it be a bad connection? Thanks
Hello my friend, can you please subscribe to the channel for me? thanks..Now, your no crank PT could be many of things. Ide like to thing any battery connection problems was repaired during the battery installation, if not, start there. As far as guessing if the starter is at fault, ide rather you not guess, a starter can easily be diagnosed using the starter relay, just have someone run straight 12 volts to the starter from the relay and see if it cranks..You have to have a starting point, are there any fault codes? can you even hear the click at the starter relay? and if connection on point..Start somewhere.
JT, I have a 2001 PT cruiser, I replaced crank, map, cam sensors, fuel pump, checked the continuity on fuses, crank the engine no start, checked the spark plugs, and they are new but black with a little oil on the electrodes, what could it be,
any codes? when you say no start, you mean its spinning over, just not starting up? spinning over fast? It may be compression test time, you need well over 100 psi on each cylinder, also need to verify if spark from coil making it to the plugs (leave 1 plug wire off with a plug in it, spin over and see if plug sparking) Because this car heavily computer dependent, you need to see what the computer NOT seeing to allow start. That comes from a good scan tool under inputs....Hey sub the channel for me and let me know answers to these..thanks

This year PT Cruiser has a module called the TIPM that control front lighting..You very well may have a open circuit in the TIPM..If you have a way to scan the TIPM module, its probably a fault code inside relating to the headlight..If you have no open wires from TIPM to the headlights, go get a used TIPM, make sure it has the same features that your car has...BTW, please subscribe to the channel for me, thanks
My 2002 PT cruiser has a crank no start but only has spark to number 1&4 spark plugs. There is a real weak signal on the 2&3 spark plug wire before the connector which is not enough to cause a spark on the spark plugs. Could this be a PCM issue?
Hello my friend, thanks for watching. Yes, that could very well be a driver inside the PCM. But it could also be a coil pack, or for that matter wiring..you need to perform a no start no spark test to verify or determine which part at fault.
@@OnlineMechanicTips Thank you for responding.I have performed a no spark test, When there was no spark to 2&3 then moved on to the signal wires. That's were I found that there is a weaker signal on the wire that feeds 2&3 spark plugs. I don't think it's any sensor cause 1&4 plugs are getting spark, It's just a weak signal to 2&3 but I may be wrong. Please advise.

JT. I have a 06 Cruiser new battery new alternator and car still won’t start. It’s turning over very slow like it wants to start but not getting enough power or fuel or something. It’s giving off a code of P0113. Could this have anything to do with why it’s not starting?
hello my friend..You telling me the engine turns over slow even with a new battery and alternator? wow, either the starter output low or theres a major strain on the engine. The P0113 could be from if you had the key on with the air temp sensor unplugged....Its hard to tell if strain on the engine (seizing up) manually by turning the engine with a breaker bar at the crank pulley, you dont have much of a choice but to put a starter on it..ide say replace the starter..now depending on how slow or how the engine turning over makes a difference..if that egine turns over fast you would suspect low compression but a slow turning over engine with the correct voltage from the electrical sys could be like I said, a starter failure or internal engine problem..Its really hard to tell without hearing it
JT Automotive Rideshare Guru thx for responding. I found the issue it was a grounding wire that attached at the hood and body of the car. It appeared to snap off probably for having to open the of this car so muh😂. I do believe that fixed the issue because it’s been starting effortlessly now nd the battery light has finally cleared from the dash. I also replaced the air filter and cleaned the IAF sensor which appeared to fix my P0113 code. Been driving it for a week now and problems seem to be solved. Now I gotta figure out why the heat isn’t working. I’m thinking clogged heater core 🤔. Thanks for all your help I do appreciate it.

Hey buddy, can I get you to subscribe to the channel? thanks..Now, if your PT spinning over but not starting, im sure you started with the basics such as having fuel in the car..Not sure if you have a scan tool but it helps to know if you have fault codes..For instance, a cam sensor code would lead you to checking to see if timing belt broken..Its really hard to proceed unless I know what fault codes inside the computer

My friend, bypassing the relay will just let you know that the circuit is complete from the relay to the starter,,That will just tell the starter to spin, you will need ignition pulse from the PCM for the actual start to happen...You will need a good scan tool to look at inputs, you need to know if the signal from the security key there, is the car in park, what codes if any inside the PCM?...Please subscribe to the channel for me, thanks

Iod stands for ignition off draw..its in the tipm if this a 2006 or higher pt cruiser..what kind of problem are you having?

Hey my friend, can you subscribe to the channel for me?, thanks..Listen, this 06 model PT was equipped with a SKIM module (security sys) that tells the system when key off has happen. You really need to scan this module and see what codes came up..Also the ignition switch suppose to take away the power supply from the sys when key is turn off..You could very well have a internally shorted ignition switch
Ok this what I've done I checked ignition switch good n I checked ignition cylinder housing good relays good. I did notice the remote wouldn't lock the doors
Uhmmm, when you say good on the ignition switch, what are you saying? Because when the key is turn off, the power supply to the modules are suppose to be taken away..Now, the door lock function are controlled by your cluster if the signal is received by the SKIM (security) module and the key..Thats why its very important that you get the codes out of your SKIM (security) module. That will lead you into the right direction
Hey man, I have a 2002 PT, no crank, no start, I replaced ignition switch & actuator, no change. I’ve reset the IOD fuse, I turn the key to start the only lights on the dash lit up is the fuel, check engine,air bag, seatbelt,brake & a red dot light lit in between the fuel & temp gauge.
