Limmy: are they joking there's only two types of Scottish people? Also Limmy: *repeatedly does impressions of two types of English people (posh and Northern) * But that's why we love him
Can't believe Limmy was able to keep the secret that he was in this skit at the end. Too bad they cut him off, as he was about to make his sideways point.
I believe the point of the character (and therefore the sketch) is that a lot of Scottish people have a massive superiority complex when it comes to their national identity. I know that seems obvious, but Limmy didn't seem to get it. >Like how every Scottish person seems to think that we invented all modern tech but never got the credit somehow. If we're winning, it's because we're amazing. We Scots value education and are smarter, if we're losing it's only because we're the underdog and a colonized people denied their full potential. All of the bad shit we did was "the UK", not Scotland, so it doesn't get mentioned in the national mythos. >How we're apparently a uniquely progressive and foward thinking nation, which would be a utopia if England wasn't holding us back. It's a load of shite btw, Scotland is full of the same LGBTphobic, racist, classist/whatever types of people as England and I'm not just talking about yer da. Edinburgh and parts of Glasgow are quite progressive, but nothing special as UK cities go. The SNP is a bit more progressive than the tories, but people mainly vote them in because they want independence, not because they've even read their policies. >How Scottish cunts online are always trying to present us Scots as more relatable and down to earth. Better patter, hard men and top shaggers by default. Why would you even bring up being Scottish at all? Going as far as to type phonetically in a Glaswegian accent so everybody knows you're Scottish 😂 That shit works on Americans, but to a fellow Scot it's like somebody TYPING IN ALL CAPS TO GET ATTENTION! Being Scottish does not make you automatically funnier or a sound cunt. It's a weird delusional ego thing we really need to drop.
I agree with some of your points to an extent but I also think there's a lot of truth to those comparisons. Bear in mind that limmy's perception of Scottish people is mostly glaswegians. I do believe people in Glasgow are generally different in some fundamental ways to the majority of English people. I've studied and worked in England and I would say from my experience that the patter is definitely worse although there are obviously some funny people (but in general they are less likely to detect when you're having a laugh/being sarcastic and prefer to have a cup of tea and go to bed than have a few drinks and some laughs - again, not everyone obviously but a very noticeable difference). I'd also say that although there are plenty of regressive attitudes in Scotland, it is clearly a more progressive country and that is demonstrated in electoral results even if you don't think people study the SNP's policies too much. Boris Johnson won a landslide majority ffs. In terms of being down to earth and relatable I have found English people to be a tad more snobby and willing to openly slag off deprived areas and the people who live there without any hint that they might be being offensive. England have twice as many kids in private education per capita compared to Scotland and that's before you consider all the ones who go to grammar schools (often with the help of private tutors) which are almost equivalent. I think it's clear that there a much higher fraction of English people who are middle class compared to Scotland and that shows in everything from their voting to their popular media output. Without even talking about the popularity of certain elitist sports that don't seem to exist in Scotland, contrast Scotland's most popular comedies like still game, burnistoun, limmy, chewin the fat with the BBC comedies that come from England (I think there's some hilarious English shows e.g. peep show, Monty python but there's no denying their intended audience is a lot more middle class). So all in all, yes I do think that in general, Scottish people are a bit more down to earth and have more of a sense of humour but that's mostly because a higher fraction of the country is made up of people of more working class backgrounds and at all levels of society we have more of a culture of letting our hair down without being judged as pleby and uncultured.
The difference (in my opinion) is that Stewart Lee's piece is most evidently a good natured ribbing, aided and abetted by an approving Glasgow audience. It is also very original, absurd and above all funny. Conversely, Harry Enfield's sketch is not original, nor particlarly funny. It doesn't come across as sending up a particular type of of Scot but rather it feels directed at all Scots even adding in the 'Billy Connolly' character like a catch all. I dare say there are a few Scots like Enfield's Dougall, as with all nations, but it was pretty tired and criminally unfunny.
@@jackwilson5513 I think it's a generational thing. I'd argue stewart lee's bit is actually a bit more harsh but funnier for that reason. Harry Enfields stuff is something my parents might have found funny but is just painfully mild to me.
