    Most of the boards are plug in, the sockets are on the opposite side of the terminals. Actually, I've found these to be easier to work on than most others. I own a 1200 and an 1120, the 1200 is 52 years old the 1120 42. Both are solid and sound great.

    about that security screw: i just realized that all my torx screwdrivers i have are able to unscrew security torx screws. So there should be a lot of people with the right tools to unscrew them without even knowing they are special.

    They made some very good speakers in Canada. I have a pair of Reference 3A de Capo-i speakers made in Canada Ontario, made mainly with valve amps in mind 92db sensitivity and are my favourite speakers, they have no crossover fitted so you get everything from the recording. Standmounts and they weigh 27 lbs each.

    You can transform your "surplus" speakers into Transmision Line speakers. That will increase clarity in midrange/midbass, extend bass and treat congestion. They will be taller but, hey...it's worth it.

    Interesting find with that Marrantz amp! I have never heard such an annoying sound come from a piece of stereo equipment. If I heard that noise, I’d think there was a fire and leave the house! That is a strange design, and my parents own a newer (1991) Sony str-av970 receiver that has those different metal pins that you said would not work on the Marrantz. Seems weird, and I would think manufacturers would stick to a standard way of doing that.
    I agree that most Polk speakers I have heard just sound absolutely hollow and tinny. This is the same thing I noticed with my sets of Polk t15s from 2013 and 2014. They have a peak at 1khz, a peaky on-axis treble response (slightly better off axis), and downright IMPROPERLY tuned bass ports and woofers!!! I am comparing my Polk speakers to 1999 Paradigm atom v2s, 2001 Paradigm Titan v2s, 1972 KLH model 32s, 1982 realistic nova 5s, 1973 Sony ss-510s, and 2015 KRK Rokit 5 powered studio monitors. The only speakers that come close to sounding anywhere near as bad as the polks are the vintage Sony’s, which came with many models of “stereo music systems”- receivers that had built-in turntables. Even the old Sonys don’t have that annoying 1khz peak, and are louder around the 100hz range.

    The cheaper ones most likely sound like they have more bass if you've got them up on a shelf by the wall. Haven't watched the whole thing yet, in case you mention this later in the video. :)
    Positioning is everything for low end response.

    • @darinb.3273
      @darinb.3273 2 роки тому

      Definitely true however cross ovees box size and free movement of the woofer/full range driver have much more to do with bass response. You noticed the box size of the white speaker boxes, if Dave had put the black ones on the bottom I'm fairly certain the white ones would still sound richer in bass response as well as the softer midrange. As always there really is no good comparison like being there in person (camera microphone really wasn't designed for that purpose).

    metal polish like autosol works great at removing oxidation. I prefer it to sanding down my Silverface Marantz amplifier 20 grit sandpaper. The speakers compliment each other very well...P1 with highs and P2 with Bass. You should build a speaker and throw all the drivers in a box and build a cool cross over. I actually like PSB speakers the most.

      @@marcdich9066 I encountered a tape deck that had a really loud staticky sound, my initial thought was a dirty rec/play switch after cleaning it, it still did the samething. I finally figured out what it was. It was made in the era when components had a blend of silver in the terminals and as it turns out the silver tarnished between the solder. The fix was easy once I saw the black legs on the preamp chip for the rec/play head. I desoldered it cleaned all the black off resoldered in place and she had the normal hiss levels for the quality of the deck not a high end deck at all but anyway that was the 1st time I encountered silver oxidized contacts that caused a serious connection issue that caused loud static in that way. It sounded very much like a leaky transistor, Dave knows that sound well LOL.

      Call block works great. Its an add on though so I don't have it on my personal cell, but my work cell does. When a call comes through that has never dialed before they get a recording to press 0-9 to get through. No button press they get a recording saying I don't accept unidentified calls and get disconnected. Stops 100% of these scam calls.

    TBF, as it comes across on my laptop (old HP630 with some of Altec & Jim B's finest finest, and a dead channel. Fed into my even older ears, also one semi-dead channel!) I prefer the brighter sound of the Polk speakers over the Paradigms. Could be their position in relation to your mic, or the rolling-off of top end that my hearing has experienced over the years but either way they just seemed to have better crisper highs & as for bass, well it's just imagined by the time it's filtered through my equipment lol but they sounded like the bass was cleaner too...

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 роки тому +1

      You wouldn't say that if you heard them in person. The owner of the amp heard them in person. He agrees with me.

    • @danmackintosh6325
      @danmackintosh6325 2 роки тому

      Revisiting this when my right ear has popped "in" for a spell, and it's the other way around. The Paradigm sound smoother and as the volume is increased the Polk start to sound more harsh and dareisay tinny, almost... Again, my ears are not in box-fresh condition nor is my laptop's sound reproduction. If there's anything to take away from the comparison it is that how something sounds and whether it's "good" is very largely subjective and can vary in a short space of time even for one person.

      Security isn't so secure any more. A full kit of security screws is available from Walmart or most auto-parts stores these days, for 12 to 15 bucks. Decades ago, when Robertson screws were uncommon in the US, I used to use them to install covers over EQs and crossovers in nightclub sound systems so that that DJ'S couldn't tamper with the settings, but some of them discovered that a small flat blade screwdriver inserted crossways into the corners of the Robertson's crew would allow them to remove it. Nowadays, of course,, you can get those square bits anywhere. Torx bits with a hole in them, for removing special "security" Torx, are also fairly easy to find. Maybe try a "clutch-drive" screw with an hourglass-shaped indentation in the screwhead, those are a bit more obscure; vintage 1960's Ampeg guitar amps used them.

    • @marka1986
      @marka1986 2 роки тому

      If I remember I think the Ampeg screws had a head resembling a bow tie. Also magnavox have some boom boxes that used torx screws. You had to buy the right tool because the screws were at least 8 to nine inches in. A setup with bits and extensions wouldn't work because the hole diameter was too narrow.
