The Barb SS-220 needs a mention. She sank more tonnage than half the boats mentioned here, but also brazenly launched the only ground operation on the Japanese home islands during the entire war

Yeah but shes only top:4 in US service and wouldn't even make top 40 compared to german Subs.

Barb is in a category of her own. Barb patrols 8-12 were the stuff of legends, she was a pirate ship that could dive. What Fluckey didn’t sink in tonnage he more than made up for in innovation and willingness to take calculated risks.

I have one issue with this list. The USS Archerfish (SS-311) should have been here. In terms of number of ships, she was one of the least successful submarines of any navy. That said, she also sank the largest warship to ever be sunk by a submarine, the Shinano. It was the largest aircraft carrier until the nuclear age, displacing 65k tons, and was originally intended as the third in the Yamato class of super battleships. Through a combination of skill by the Archerfish, as well as false assumptions on the part of the Shinano's captain, rushed construction, and plain dumb luck, the Archerfish succeeded in sinking the carrier with only 4 torpedoes. By way of comparison, the Shinano's sister ship, the Musashi, required 19 torpedoes and 17 bomb hits before sinking.

I understand your feelings, but had you listened to the intro you would know that this list is based on number of ships sunk. So the Archerfish having but one ship sunk would not qualify for this list. Perhaps you could suggest that list to this channel and see if they do it for you.

Shinano was being transferred to the Inland Sea for completion. After 5 years construction effort, when Archerfish sank it, Shinano had known the open sea for less than 20 hours...

Not really any skill when it came to sinking shinano. She was as you said, basically incomplete and Archerfish was just cutting down a rotten tree

The number of ships sunk isn't really the best way to determine "Most succesful". It really should be determined by tonnage instead because tonnage is much more important than just the numbers of ships. USS Barb did an incredible job and actually pulled off attacking a large convoy while they were at anchor in a VERY well protected and shallow harbor. Getting out out she even set a new record for speed by her class.

This list kinda sucks ass tbh. A random sub could get 50 confirmed tug or harbor barge kills and it would be instantly the no.1 on the list

My grandfather was 22 years old when he died on the USS Tang. My dad was 2 years old. I feel enormous pride and deep sadness that the war took him from my family so young, and that my dad never knew his father. Yet, I would not be here today if he hadn't perished on the Tang. The unfortunate loss of the Tang set in motion events leading to my birth that would never have happened otherwise.

The USS Barb should had been on the list as the only Sub to sink a train, and its Captain received the Medal of Honor. The Barb sent a group of saliors onto a Japanese island and planted explosives under the tain tracks.

Woulda made more sense if the ones that had the same number of ships sunk would've been listed by tonnage.

  • @webbtrekker534
    @webbtrekker534 9 місяців тому +1

The calculations were based on ships over 500 tons. Anything less was not counted in total tonnage sunk. Hundreds of smaller vessels were sunk by US subs but never counted to tonnage totals. Example. USS Blenny SS 324, on her last war patrol sank 62 vessels but only one was over 500 tons, the gunboat Nankai at 2400 tons, the other 61 were all under the 500 ton mark. By rights Blenny should rank #1 for vessels sunk at 75 but the powers that be said under the 500 mark wasn't worth counting. Blenny only fired one torpedo that patrol all the rest were sunk by deck guns, boarding parties and by being burned.

The think you need to include the USS Archerfish. It sank the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine in history. (The Shinano)

USS Tang's Skipper Dick O'Kane was the most successful American submariner of the war, but he was standing on the shoulders of another giant: 'Mush' Morton was his captain on the Wahoo and he taught him (and the rest of the Navy) how to employ the submarine in a more aggressive manner.

The USN definitely had many different sub classes in WW2. The V boats, S-Boats, Porpoise, Salmon, Sargo, Tambor/Gar, Gato, Balao and Tench classes.

Theres a reason the navy measures success in gross tonnage vs "boats sunk" because bringing down a carrier inside a carrier group > sinking 40 canoes.
Tang's 3rd deployment, if im not mistaken, is the most successful pound for pound & dollar for dollar object the navy has ever put to sea.

“Numbers Sunk”, as others have mentioned, means next to nothing compared to tonnage sunk, or more plainly, ship size. If you go by the “Numbers” list, that means you believe a Japanese Destroyer of 1,750 tons is equal to say, a Japanese Fleet Carrier rated at 36,500 tons. As Submariners, we care a hell of a lot more about how big the target is sent to the bottom.
In any event, USS TANG was #1 in both categories after the post-war JANAC Revisions.

Perhaps it should also be mentioned about the USS Wahoo that Commander Morton and his crew were war criminals. They sank the Buyo Maru and then shot at the castaways in their lifeboats, which also contained Indian prisoners of war. In other words, allied soldiers.
Morton made no secret of this deed and dutifully recorded his actions in the Wahoo's logbook, which is why it can be assumed that higher authorities also found out about the incident and knew about it. Morton was never charged, however

ships should be commemorated by tonnage sunk. it's how navy usually does things lmao also uss barb where???? literally sank the most tonnage in the war, revolutionized submarine warfare with rocket launchers and shore bombardment, and its 12th patrol had the only land operation in the japanese main islands of the entire war and they sank a train. plus, not a single person in the crew was majorly injured or died. uss barb was so good that after its 11th patrol(and supposed final under rear admiral fluckey since u were only allowed 4) she was allowed a 5th and final run with fluckey(legendary 12th). she took all the rocket launchers in pearl harbor with her on that patrol, and when she ran out of all her ammo(a crap ton) she sank a boat by ramming it

@@natureofparadise2380 IJN subs put the final blow to the Yorktown at Midway along with the destroyer Hamman, sunk the Carrier Wasp and damaged the North Carolina, The Indianapolis, some merchant vessels in the Indian Ocean. But overall the IJN unlike the USN failed to adapt their role to new tactics and objectives after the tide of war changed.
