Actually MK is more environmentally friendly. In Canada there is recycling and compost but Macedonia is also starting recycling. Did you know in Canada only 3% of recycling actually gets recycled, the rest, landfill. There are no numbers for composting but considering it gets moved to three different plants all the trucks and fossil fuels being burned is way worse.
The packaging in Macedonia is way much less aswell.
As to the "boiler" situation, you know that in Canada you have a boiler as well, just hidden in the basement. The only difference is that the water is cooling and being re-heated all day long, every day, used or not.
Finally way more people walk than drive, you know how lonely it is on a Canadian sidewalk with the river of cars ripping by.
The drivers though, 100% correct. :)

Hello Natalie! I have been watching and enjoying your chats about moving to Macedonia. I'm British, but I've lived in northern Greece (my home is half an hour's drive from the border with Macedonia) for the past 38 years. I absolutely love Macedonia and see it as my second home, as I have visited Krusevo on holiday and shorter trips about 40 times since 2009 and i have very many friends there. I also love Skopje, where I have friends - i was there last August. In this videochat you touched on a point I had been wondering about and that is the language. You said that English is widely spoken in Skopje, which is very true. In other places where there is tourism it is also widespread, as is logical. I am self-taught in Macedonian (of course, in Greece it is virtually impossible to find organised lessons in Macedonian, more's the pity). So, I was wondering: due to your family background, do you already speak Macedonian or is learning the language part of your new life there? Many thanks in advance, and good luck!!! Многу поздрави!!!

Yes, I do speak Macedonian however the town that my parents are from have a different dialect and so naturally I spoke more slang after spending so many summers there. Moving to Skopje and learning to speak more "formally" was new for me and is still a learning process, though I keep being told people in Skopje have many different dialects due to being from all over the country! In terms of lessons, there are online Macedonian language classes if that is something that interests you :) let me know

@@Back2TheBalkans thanks for such a speedy reply! Although I am an English teacher (and fluent speaker of Greek} and have been for almost four decades and now work exclusively online, I am a tad "old school" as regards myself and I use Christina Kramer's excellent Macedonian book course (and large paper dictionaries purchased some years ago in Prilep) to teach myself. Kramer herself teaches (taught?) Macedonian at the University of Toronto and extremely kindly gave me free access to the audio files online to go with her book. Nowadays I find myself restricted to spoken practice in Macedonian on my yearly visits to Krusevo, where I amuse my friends with my mistakes in Macedonian ...! That, however, is also part of the beauty of travel and of language, is it not?!

    Hi Natalie,
You got wrong the situation with the mesh on the windows. It is commonly used in Macedonia but it is installed separately from the windows. So, if you want you can install it (it is called 'komarnici' and there are several different designs).

Speaking purely from my experience, any property I ever stayed at in Macedonia didn't have komarnici installed, not even when I visited growing up. Yes, even in my own apartment, I had to get them installed separately.
