I must start by giving you a massive THANK YOU! Having previously watching this video I successfully completed the task of servicing the carb on my mower. First attempt, no problems at all. Your guidance throughout made doing the job quite enjoyable and most definitely satisfying. A lovely feeling of accomplishment. Therefore when my mowers performance recently began to fall well short of what was required I decided to replace the Carb, Spark Plug, Oils, and Air Filter. Give it a good all round clean and hope for the best. Following your instructions was easy and I needn't have been concerned about the result. It works PERFECTLY. Again on my first attempt. Thank you so much. Forever Grateful.
My happiness was somewhat short lived. My mower only ran for a few minutes. Kept stopping. I'm hoping that it's due to the petrol. I think maybe a bit of water was in the container I used to store the syphoned fuel from the mower. I will try replacing the fuel. I'll keep you informed.
As an ex-greenkeeper who is now partially disabled and looking to upgrade his pathetic electric battery packed mower with a petrol self propelled mower, its shocking to see the deck in such a state of disregard, most of these expensive mowers come with a hose hole, failing that it isnt that difficult to prop it up carb side up and blast the deck for a minute. Really great video, appreciate the indepth discussion about the motor. I was trained to only ever tip petrol mowers to the side with the carb or you'll flood the engine, but in my years of use and time spent cleaning and servicing the hayters and stihl machines i used at work, I've tipped them to a small incline on either side to clean the deck and never had an issue so long as you aren't tilting them over 45 degrees. When servicing the mower, take care to wire brush your screws/bolts to remove any debris that may have set like cement in the slot, at the venue I worked for in our service guide we were to grease every screw and bolt with copper anti seize so they could be removed easily, we had a hayter with a rear roller that vibrated so much every bolt and screw on it was seized with so much loctite the thing gave off a pretty distinct odour when it was roasting in summer and you were rolling the flower gardens by the hotel lol.
Great video and very helpful. Thanks. Re: the B&S 300, I think they need to include a locking oil cap on future updates. The number of times I've mowed under hedges only to have the oil cap catch, unscrew and oil spit out before I notice. Otherwise a great little engine.

You will have to do the service on the carburetor I show in this video to get all the fuel out. If you don't want to take it all apart I would buy a cheap oil extractor and get all the oil and diesel out with it then tip it over to drain the carb fit a new spark plug fill to the top with fresh petrol and try it. Hi. I just replaced my rotted Flymo quicksilver Briggs and stratton with the latest version of this mountfield 185. I was a bit disappointed that there is so much plastic but anyway couple of quick questions. When priming, the bulb doesn't get firm like the old mower did. And it always seems to take 2-3 pulls to get it to go. Is this normal? The Flymo was branded an "easy start" and even after 15 years it fired up after one pull every spring. Cheers.
I changed the spring on my 300. Stopped the hunting in it's tracks ! Had to bend the upright left end spring attachment point slightly to the last to accelerate the motor and get it running smooth and sweet.
I have one of these mowers and keeps reving up and down,I'm not sure it's the carb, when moving the governor arm it seems to settle, what I'm trying to say is there is no idle screws.
Hi Paul...I hope you don't mind some more constructive criticism but instead of replacing the carb assy, you need to remove & clean the jets out properly to cure the hunting or rough running. At worst, just replace the jet assy. Here is a video example of a more GENTLE way of removing and cleaning it: ua-cam.com/video/zT_wQCyKjXQ/v-deo.htmlm45s
@@MowerMan Ok, I was really trying to show that you can split the jet assembly so you can get at the emulsion tube to clean it out which should sort out the rough running/hunting

Make sure the recoil is fitted correctly could be something catcjing the flywheel also or something between the edge of the blade and the deck
Thanks for the video although I wish you had time stamps so we could jump to the issue we want to work on. Great video nonetheless tho
What is the model number for this 300 series engine? The stickers are gone on mine and I am having trouble identifying it and finding parts to service it :|
Hi, just taken a look at the replacement you recommend, they come with 2 red gaskets, why is that?
I think people lose them Philip.
Cheers.
Ed O'Brien I find it usually takes a couple of pulls. Have you tried starting it without priming? sometimes they start better
@@MowerMan I'll try that. Thanks
I've changed the carb but the engine is now surging, any advice?
still the carb
@@MowerManEven if its a brand new one?
@@JonBlundell-hj6iv yes these are dodgy. Or bore out the pilot hole slightly. Micks mowers has a vid
@@MowerMan thanks👍
Hi Paul, I replaced the carburettor with a brand new one but it’s still hunting, any suggestions?
I changed the spring on my 300. Stopped the hunting in it's tracks ! Had to bend the upright left end spring attachment point slightly to the last to accelerate the motor and get it running smooth and sweet.
@@robinbest4786 Hi Robin, where can I get a spring from please
It’s ok I have brought them and so far it’s done the trick, Thanks.
@@anthonymack6114 Pleasure. Happy mowing . . . !!
@@robinbest4786 no it’s back to hunting again ?
I have one of these mowers and keeps reving up and down,I'm not sure it's the carb, when moving the governor arm it seems to settle, what I'm trying to say is there is no idle screws.
These plastic carbs are very hit an miss. Get another couple and try them. It's the carb for sure
Thanks for reply, wheres best place to buy
I’ve got the mountfield sp185 300 series got to say it’s a awsum mower
Why does mine start but then cut out each time thanks Bill Harrison
Great video ! My 300 is hunting - maybe the regulator spring needs replacing. Could you give me the part number for it? Many thanks, Mower Man . . . !
100% wont be the spring. You need to service or replace the carb
@@MowerMan serviced the carb re your video, bent the spring (!) . Still hunting .
Changed the spring - running sweet as a nut ! The old spring must have lost it's sproing - aka end of shelf life . . .
There’s a place in Lingfield sells parts. Will try to find link.
I got mine at the above.
Lam.Tot Well.Done
Are both sides on flywheel magnetic
Earl Cox Not sure i looked tbh. Why do you ask?
Mower Man I have a yard machine push mower that I’m working on fires up one day next nothing
Is fuel unleaded?
@@shirleybayliss7563 yes. Petrol in the tank and oil in the oil hole.
Good vid Paul . You can use a small driver to pull the jet .
Do you mean to seperate the white plasic parts inside pete? I forgot to show this bit. I filmed it without pressing record!
Yes Paul but you can pop the lot with a small driver.
Hi how do you speed the engine on the 300 please
Meet the Hanlon's behind the petrol tank there is a governor spring. Bend the tab slightly to make the spring tighter
@@MowerMan thanks bud
let me know how it goes
It's running great now used to struggle in the wet but not anymore thank you
Meet the Hanlon's Thats great! Happy to have helped!
what is difference between 300e and 450e
Not much I dont' think apart from power? look onBriggs site?
9/32 and 5/16 for the back plate of the filter. Remember it is a US made engine.
My socket sets from the UK
I did everything you just Instructed, My lawnmower still doesn't start :(
Does it try and start then die? Or nothing?
@@MowerMan Sounds like it wants to but doesn't make it. "Low on gas sound"
Check you have spark. Let me know
@@MowerMan I put a new spark plug, ignition coil, carburetor, oil change and clean gas
@@nsmcastillo326 do you get a spark?
Hi Paul...I hope you don't mind some more constructive criticism but instead of replacing the carb assy, you need to remove & clean the jets out properly to cure the hunting or rough running. At worst, just replace the jet assy. Here is a video example of a more GENTLE way of removing and cleaning it:
ua-cam.com/video/zT_wQCyKjXQ/v-deo.htmlm45s
Thats a good video thanks. I don't like prising the plastic though as you can distort it. I prefer to pull the parts out.
@@MowerMan Ok, I was really trying to show that you can split the jet assembly so you can get at the emulsion tube to clean it out which should sort out the rough running/hunting
Changing the drive cable on these is a nightmare. Whoever designed this mower put no thought into servicing these parts whatsoever
