Something I like about this figure not enough reviewers mention is that you can plug his gun on his back with the canon facing down and the blast effect inserted in and now it looks like Hot Rod has a jetpack. And the spoiler even looks like its wings.
As a kid I wanted this set so badly, but my copy of Classics Hot Rod split in two straight out of the box as a kid. So even when I had the chance to pick up this set when I was about 14 I didn't because my Hot Rod 2007 Movie Jazz'ed himself.
Man this takes me back. I miss when 3PC's for Transformers were like these creative upgrades & occasional figures for the Pre-Thrilling 30 era CHUG figures before it became a clout of Masterpiece placeholders. Fansproject were definitely the champs back in the day.
What I used to do was slide the fsce down slightly to cover the chin. You can balance it so it doesn't give him to big of a forehead and covers the chin. Loved how the flames on the chest would pop out when you connected it to him. I loved how they give him his own little Roller type drone. Wish the real ones had that
I MISS the days of Generations Third Party. Everything is mostly Legends or Masterpiece, so stuff like DNA Design are a lost art to me. Not just upgrade kits, but full figures too.
Dude thank you for making this, i always remember watching a video abt a rodimus design like that with the chest when i was younger but i could never remember the name or brand of it, this is the one. Thanks!!!
There's a KO of this and a crystal version too. The crystal version goes with the Japanese Henkei translucent Hot Rod. If you have any questions please ask, I have all of them.
@ It does a bit. With my KO the chest ‘flames’ do not push forward as they do with the original. I don’t think the removed parts clip in as tightly either. I’m glad I have the KO, it looks good, but the original is clearly better. If you can, get the crystal version with the Henkel Hot Rod. I adore that thing!
I hate how your videos bring back my nostalgia of watching Emgo316 and vangelus review all of these third party products back when I was a kid and being completely blown how cooler my store brought Walmart/Target toys could get but never knew where to buy em.
I still want this set. I remember watching both this and the Ultra Magnus/Optimus city defender or whatever that one was called. I just never had the right figures. I got the 2 pack with movie colors Hot Rod and Cyclones during the reveal the shield line
My first ever transformer was the hot rod and cyclonus from the battle in space two pack and it broke at the chest piece, I never knew it was a common issue
I still have this set, along with the vac-metal "gold" extra add-on. I bought a Classics Hot Rod and a Henkei Hot Rod, and used this set and the vac-metal add-on to make the Henkei Hot Rod into an extra-special Rodimus Prime. Might work up some foil stickers for the flames, one day . . . .
I found the upgrade kit, at a store here in Iowa. Called Jay's cd and hobby. The only thing it's missing is the spoiler extensions. For when the trailer is combined with my classics, hot rod
I got this set, including the extra Hot Rod, along with the alternate face plates set, Targetmaster Firebolt add-on, and the alternate gold chrome fins at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC for about $150 from a dealer friend several years ago... absolutely love this set, and this has been my go to Rodimus Prime for years until the commander class version we got a few years back... I won't say that it replaced this awesome set, but now I have 2 solid display options instead of just one... I also really like how this set gives Rodimus his own little hotrod version of Roller, and I keep it displayed with the blaster flame 🔥 in the tailpipe, and I alternate the expanded rifle or the Targetmaster Firebolt in gun mode, mounted on the Roller (which you didn't show in the video)... Another awesome FT product from that same era, is the G3 Optimus Prime Trailer... THAT is one of my favorite pieces to this day... I really wish some company would have adapted it to upgrade the Earthrise Prime and replace that dinky little cheap trailer, but now we have the SS86 Optimus Prime so it may seem irrelevant at this point, but I'd still love a version of it for that particular Optimus Prime... The various versions of the "City Commander Armor" were really good with the Optimus/Magnus/Nemesis mold too... and there was another 3rd Party Trailer for the G3 Classics mold, which I use with my SDCC Nemesis mold, and a KO version which I use the Shadow Commander Armor with... and then there's the MAKE TOYS Battle Tanker Trailer set for the G3 Classics deluxe scale G2 Optimus Prime figure, which I bought a second one for the Takara RiD Nemesis/Scourge repaint of the mold, and that was also an excellent set! Such great upgrades!
I had this one as a little kid. He was one of my favorites. When he snapped in half I cried. He stayed in car mode for years, and then I lost the top half. Still really liked him.
A minor point, but Vangelus’ video actually mentions that there is a different way to attach the boots that is more secure where you hook them over the leg stumps
Had this Hot Rod. Accidentally broke him a few years ago. Knocked him off a 6 ft shelf one side of the hinge on his chest broke. Broke my heart even though I had the SS 86 one.
I remember wanting this way back, nowadays its not quite my cup of tea aesthetic wise. I still miss the era of 3rd party upgrade kits that turns a figure into something else amazing. I feel like this was the kit that eventually inspired the POTP leader Rodimus
Man, it’s hard to think now that 3rd party stuff in like the 07-10 years were mainly just upgrade kits for existing figures. I remember beefing this guy and Magnus right up with upgrade kits. I forgot how good the Rodimus one was.
Honestly these older upgrade kits were so good that even ko companies replicated them(though to varying levels off succes, i had the magnus set as the ko but the arms didn't stay on...)
I miss this style of upgrade kit. There are some cool ones for Legacy Animated Optimus and Prowl but everything else is just gap fillers and weapon packs.
This thing looks SO GOOD Im both the *biggest* fan of the robot mode, but it isn’t bad. But that alt mode? HOOO BOY it looks amazing! Edit: now that I’m looking at it more, I fw the bit mode. If I ever get it, I’m probably gonna keep off the extra wings. I like the “double-chin,” makes him look wiser. And as for the Roller Drone, OH MY GOD YES YES YES YES PLEASE MAKE THIS A STAPLE, HES PERFECT
The Parallax armor 6 for classics Optimus was on BBTS for $15 for the longest time. Might even still be there now... What was nice is it is a permanent upgrade, no moving parts around anymore than the standard classics 06 mold, and due to used copies of the figure without the roof gun being rather cheap (I've found 2 at thrift stores the past few years) it's not a particularly pricey investment for a very unique Optimus design
I remember when I was a kid and my nan got me this for Christmas and first time transforming it that hinge broke, I was so upset so she bought me the movie brawl and it was the best Christmas ever 😂
I’ve got the City Commander add on which comes with his target master and gold front wing pieces to make it compatible with the united rodimus. I don’t know if the “handshake” piece came with that add on or was some sort of exclusive bonus for the kit but I’ve got that too. Getting the handshake to work is a bit finicky but it looks so good once you get it set. I also dig the lore comic that the instructions have and the inside of the packaging that shows a sick panel of that comic.
I remember this figure well, it was my first Classics line figure. I can't remember if the chest split from the main body or not, but I have to imagine that it probably did.
If there are 2 figures that need the Legacy treatment those are Classics Optimus and Classics Rodimus. Classics Rodimus was one of the first official figures I ever had. For me, it's the best looking Hot Rod/Rodimi out there, just a point above Energon Truck Rodimus. And the armor drives him way up in the ranks.
I've always liked the fact the head was visible, but the lightpiping was worked into the windshield. Unfortunately for my copy of the armour, one of the clips for the arms that would go over the wheels snapped and I lost the face. I also got the Sideburn repaint and somehow the white leg piece at the hip snapped and I am hesitant to glue it back together for fear of it melting.
As far as I know, this guy didn't come with alt faces, though I wish there were some, as the face is the only part I dislike. Bummer you didn't get the target master with him too, he's a lot of fun, and can actually fit into the "tank" mode to drive it around! Or just peg on top of the "Roller".
The DNA Designs upgrade kit for Animated Optimus is a lot like these. It adds so much play/display value to the figure. Shame it costs as much as the figure itself. Still worth it though.
That plug in barrel for gun has another flip out peg that works better on the upgrade hands and if it was a preorder you got gold chrome spoiler parts and sidearm gun robot also the handshake part to make it look like rodi and powered convoy are bros lol
Back when 3p was actually full of creative designs and aesthetics. Now it's mainly, "oh boy yet ANOTHER Legends/MP Sunbow G1 figure, daring today aren't we." There are still some companies here and there that keep that old vibe alive, but stuff really has stagnated to hell since then.
Had this figure from the two pack with cyclonus and the silver matrix, and yes it snaps...then i was messing with my uncles and did the same thing. The second time i know where it went wrong, the arms didnt go far enough from the hood of the car
Modern 3P's definitely made engineering advancements compared to old 3P, but it also just feels like it's lost the sauce compared to the 2010's. Feels like the scene's gone away from fun and imaginative designs and crazy upgrades in favor of gap fillers and 30 million panels to maintain Sunbow accuracy.
Don't glue that face on first check for Dr wu upgrade faces for him. You can slide the face down and it covers the chin more but the dr wu faces really help they are on ebay likely kos and I think unclebillyshop has some. The color is off because it's more a match to the henkei version and there is a upgrade that gives him chromed wings and a targetmaster. Blesser is a seperate thing but same targetmaster just inverted colors. There is also is a see thru and black versions of the armor ( to match see thru and shatter glass hot rod) as well as the ko that came with a scythe. On top of that toyhax has sticker sets a few actually to help modify the look of hot rod and the trailer. This is my rodimus prime I never got the kingdom version I do have a potp rodimus unicronus as well. The car is based on a actual concept car and the chest has a automatic pop out feature. Not sure how you managed to draw blood on this it's not like perfect effects ratbat and or laserbeak (there is 4 versions of that mold) swords / effects that you can cut steak/roast with. Fun tip the heneki version of hot rod is made with more durable plastic and is less prone to breaking but also was Koed as well.
9:39 THAT...was a widely known flaw with the kit. Hilariously, they never fixed the issue for the Shadow Scyther version (the repaint in Shattered Glass Hot Rod colors). Wow, so this mofo's really dropped in price lately, it seems. It's pretty wild considering that I haven't been able to find the actual Protector kit or even the KO of it for a few years. Not that it matters too much anymore with both PotP & Kingdom Rodimus now being a thing, but it sucks even more because I think that there was a repaint of Protector made specifically to go with the Reveal the Shield Battle in Space Hot Rod, and I think that version was never KO'd, either. 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️ (And losing the gun is one thing...that small peg is also quite fragile, so if it snaps off, you may as well have lost it...)
I never noticed until this video, but the tiny roller that it comes with looks a lot like MTMTE Hot Rods vehicle, I wonder if there's any connection there or just happenstance
I did not know the legs slid forward in robot mode, thought he just stood weird, been missing the arms for mine for a while because that plastic connecting the chest and head broke, but I found one for $6 that was slightly broken that I was able to re-attach the arms on, and I kind of prefer how he looks without the upgrade kit the upgrade face looks a bit weird to me
Interesting that Rodimus Roller looks like Rodimus' Cybertronian alt mode from MTMTE. I wonder if it was an influence on the design or if it's just coincidence?
Man seeing this figure again takes me back to when I saw a certain internet personality review this toy several years ago and I said wow this looks really cool. Like yeah it has aged but I'm glad that the surprisingly awesome look of this version of Rodumus still holds up even now. That being said It makes me think that before optimus prime decided to do the whole super mode gimmick for the unicron trilogy hot rod already did that thanks to upgrade kits lol. Still, great look back and I HOPE Ratchet was in robot mode afterwards.
I have the classics Hotrod upgrade kit, in transparent red. The only 2 flaws I have are the gun extension that broke, along with some of the tolerances for the arms. I do admit though, even with the brittle nature of aged transparent plastic, this kit had held up pretty well for me.
I'm learning to like hot rods character. I wished they had introduced him to the series in a better way though. I have liked his design though for years.
I bought My copy of rts hot rod for $10 and it has cracked at the chest hinge on one side after 1 transformation and the leg flap is actually connected to the thigh hinge so it’s going to move with the leg
Can I be honest? I never liked Rodimus’s trailer. I get it’s supposed to be a futuristic truck, but it’s just not believable as a truck to me. But the standard car mode is awesome. It’s something I could see being made today or in the future. I think it was only there because of Optimus’s trailer and now they tack it onto the toys. But at least this kit and the POTP (or was it the other line?) toys have it combine with the base Hotrod body to beef him up into Rodimus. Like Optimus’s Super Modes from the Unicron Trilogy. Speaking of Hotrod, I just rewatched the Prime Wars series and his arms turned into these sweet blasters. Does anyone know of 3rd party maker of those? Ideally compatible with the Kingdom Rodimus.
You can get the trailer by itself for only $40? Cool..I already have the US version of Hot Rod this kit was meant to go with, always wanted the trailer. But IIRC. it was $80 when it first came out.
Back when Upgrade Kits were cheaper than the actual figure...
Yeah those were the good old days
Love your channel bro!
This kit was $80 back in the day. Rodimus retailed for $10
My favorite Skibidi toilet fan
Is this a joke...
This kit takes me back. Back when these guys were THE 3rd party. Sets like this walked so companies like DNA design could run.
This ran so dna could walk
DNA design are a joke. Too expensive and full of gumf that no one wants.
I remember seeing the animation for the Classics Magnus upgrade kit.
Better days.
But that was a cool animation
holy crap, I forgot about that animation!
Something I like about this figure not enough reviewers mention is that you can plug his gun on his back with the canon facing down and the blast effect inserted in and now it looks like Hot Rod has a jetpack. And the spoiler even looks like its wings.
I remember watching the Baltmatrix video for this guy back in the day, made be want it so bad, still do.

thats a crazy kit
I've never been unable to see the head on this thing as having bucked teeth
I'm learning to like hot rods character. I wished they had introduced him to the series in a better way though. I have liked his design though for years.
I bought My copy of rts hot rod for $10 and it has cracked at the chest hinge on one side after 1 transformation and the leg flap is actually connected to the thigh hinge so it’s going to move with the leg
Ooo boy this gonna be good, 3d printing is a blessing and a curse
That hot rod does snap in half check my mercari
I hate modern upgrade kits for being just so damn expensive
great video keep it up!
Fansproject used to be a trailblazer for third parties. Shame they're not really round as much now

He’s know emgo!!!!!
stupid thought, how would this look using the TR figure? I know it wont fit right, but it would be interesting to see how much could fit
I know its "accurate" but I REALLY wish the rest of the trailer combined with him
completely unrelated cause i'm pretty sure i have some form of ADHD
that supreme devastator Review just became the most viewed thing on your channel
