@@shaunvlog When you come back you have to try the Muffaletta at Central Grocery on Decatur St. (they invented the Muffaletta sandwich) and some gumbo. There is no place that makes the "best" gumbo because everyone does it differently. You also shouldn't stay just in New Orleans, but adventure out to Jefferson and St. Bernard Parishes. I highly recommend Rocky & Carlo's Restaurant in Chalmette - they make the best baked macaroni and cheese. I've found the best place for a poboy sandwich is Short Stop Poboy's on Transcontinental in Metairie.

The great thing about New Orleans is that you can't get bad food. I don't think it's possible. I've been there many times, and I can't remember a single time eating something that wasn't outstanding. Glad you're enjoying it. Don't forget to try a muffaletta.

It is so true that some of the best food in the world is in this city, which is why I have so much trouble keeping the weight off. Haha. If you were on the patio of the Court of Two Sisters and looked to the west, you would see a wrought iron gate that gives onto another small patio. It's the courtyard of a small hotel that dates back to the 1700's (OUTLANDER!) It was a private home but was converted to an intimate hotel. The original owner, Jean-Baptiste Lille Sarpy built the present building in 1800 but there are 4 cottages in the back which were originally slave quarters but were later converted to garconnieres (or bachelor quarters) that Creole families provided to unmarried sons to give them privacy. Those cottages and The Old Ursuline Convent are thought to be the oldest surviving structures in the French Quarter. Monsieur Sarpy was the originator of the Sazarac cocktail. Tennessee Williams wrote "A Streetcar Named Desire" in one of the rooms. And in 1981, 38 years ago my new bride and I spent our honeymoon in those rooms. When you go to sleep, you can hear soft jazz playing. Hotel Maison De Ville, a lovely place on Rue Toulouse, right between Royale Street to the south and Bourbon Street to the North. (Oh...and the Court of Two Sisters has a dish...huge broiled lobster stuffed with deviled crab with tiny baby shrimp in the crab. Delicious...but don't eat it if you're allergic to shellfish :) )

Apparently turtle soup was a delicacy in America 100 years ago, until we ate almost all of the turtles... Now it's very rare. I live in Maryland where it was very prevalent, but I've never even tried it. Our state reptile is the Diamondback Terrapin, a popular edible turtle in those times. Also a good college basketball team :)

Also, the bread makes the po-boy - the french bread in New Orleans is unique - I've never seen it duplicated anywhere else....crispy on the outside, light and soft on the inside. My yardstick for a good po boy place is how good is their oyster po-boy, fully dressed. Also, if you ever come back here, try to take a side trip across Lake Ponchartrain to Covington - get a roast beef po-boy from Bear's.

The first time I went to New Orleans I almost didn’t come home! Between the food , music, amazing atmosphere and history it’s one of the few places that I would even consider leaving home for. There is something in the air there that I think speaks to creative people especially. I’m a writer and I can easily imagine living there while working on a book. I hope you got off the beaten tourist path. There is some great music in some of those little hole in the wall places. There is great food to be found in those spots as well. Best crawfish étouffée I’ve ever eaten was in some hole in the wall I can’t even remember the name of!

Glad you enjoyed your dining experiences. Being adventurous is a good thing. I wouldn't have been able to eat "Turtle" soup--just an emotional thing. :) What did you think of the "spice" or "heat" in the food? I meant to recommend Brennan's to you. It is classic and world renown for its Creole/French food, particularly the Eggs Benedict. They even have a "Veal Shawn" on the menu. :)

100% agree. If you want the real deal you have to get hooked up with some home cooks or some of the restaurants that cook for the home cooks. Greater New Orleans area has great food, I love my city but it doesn’t compare to the surrounding miles and miles of true delicious addictive food that we really have that no one but us get to enjoy. I’d like to keep it all to myself but it would be awe full if a person had to go their whole life without knowing what our food really taste like.

The seven years I lived around that area was my best food experience... lots of good stuff. I love boudin, but the best I had was boudin balls from a place in Scott. Don't recall the name right off, but I think they added a touch of cream cheese. I also loved/hated when my buddies did a crawfish boil because I would eat so much I'd get sick.
