Thanks +Patrick Meyer you are correct. I've confirmed that the bells are cast in a high-copper bronze alloy.

+History Out There to be precise, 77% copper 23% tin. Naylor Vickers & Co of Sheffield did make cast steel bells in the late 1800s as a cheap substitute for bronze, and many churches did buy them, despite their inferior quality. I am happy to say that very few of these rings of bells exist today, as the tone of the bells is usually terrible, and it gets worse offer time, mainly due to rust.

How well I remember being showered with rust when I rang at Moseley St. Mary in Birmingham UK. They sounded terrible, they were called the UK's worst bells. I'm glad to say they have been replaced by bronze bells.

@@HistoryOutThere Bell bronze is actually a high-tin bronze alloy, usually 22% tin. Conventional bronze is usually 12% tin.

@@patrickmeyer2802 Actually, steel is a fine alloy to cast bells. There are many examples of excellent steel bells in Europe. The problem with English steel bells is they were being manufactured at a time that is generally regarded to be the worst for English bronze bells. The physical design of bronze bells at this time was hopelessly wrong and unfortunately translated even worse into steel. The problem was with their design, not the material from which they were made. Had they been the right shape and thickness (in all the right places) you'd hardly notice the difference between a steel and bronze bell. Interestingly, today it would be more expensive to cast steel bells than it is to cast bronze bells.
