“I’m so prog I listen to concept albums on shuffle” - Kmac2021
What video is that from?
So and I
"Kmac's Extreme Guitar Tips! How to Write Breakdowns!!" Around the 1:00 minute mark.
That line always kills me
I read the "shuffle" in reverb
One time I was listening to a prog album and Spotify froze and I just waited for 2 minutes thinking "wow this silence is some avant-garde shit right here"
LOL!!!!
LMFAO
Somewhere in The Dark Third by Pure Reason Revolution there’s a couple minutes of complete silence before the song continues, used to trip me up all the time.
Sometimes you can’t tell. When I was listening to Dream Theater- Illumination Theory-I didn’t realize it had like 1-2 minutes of silence towards the end
This is what i sound like everyday tho, subbed
Why there is a Rude Adobe comment with 2 likes wtf
@@dabo8249 "rude adobe" lol
This video sucks... it's under 20 min... it's not prog!
Echoes had entered the server
LMAO
@@turniue Shine On you Crazy Diamond has entered the server

"What do you mean there's gonna be girls there?"
Mister Kingdom That's too true.
Hahahahaha!! I
If there's females there then it's probably not prog. Lol.
@@mikereiss4216 Proud female progster here. You're being incredibly sexist. It's one thing to say that you've never seen many women at prog concerts. But to say that the presence of women in the audience automatically makes a band not prog is another thing altogether. Say you went to a Yes concert--and I mean '70s Yes, not any of that recent stuff--and the audience was half women. Are they suddenly not prog? Defining a genre by the gender of its fans would be ridiculous even if it wasn't misogynistic.
And by the way, there are female prog rockers. Have you heard of the band Renaissance? Henry Cow?
Sorry, I'm only into *Prague* music. But only the early stuff, it all started to suck after that Mozart guy.
Harv72b best comment
ikr
Harv72b Every time he said "prog" I heard "Prague"
FUCKING GENIUS COMMENT
Proud for my country 😀
I rate this 15/8 out of 7/4
9/4 or get out
So thats 7.5/4...
Get outa hea
What about 17/11?
Damn thats a 15/8 out of 14/8
@@Yarin-ur8og Pi / e is my fave. Most irrational time signature ever.
No country for prog men...
duhawma Absolutely love your comment
This should be a band name
@@lorenzodw2853 Sounds like a conservative Country band name
@@Johnnysmithy24 hahahahaha true
I'm gonna listen to a prog album so... See you next year?
SK good look dude, see you in 2022
See you un 2112
If it's a Tool album, then even later.
Equally applicable to doom metal.
Lol listen to any album by Camel or Gentle Giant! See you in 35 mind
When you're too cool to have friends and you have to pretend by talking on the phone. 2017 still writing in 4/4 not even in 71/64
Bitch please...........I was writing songs in 71/64 in the womb.
Become The Knight Haha you weakling, I've been writing songs in 71/64 since I was a single sperm cell on my dad
Michael Sattler Oh child, I've been writing songs in 71/64 since I was a stem cell on to become a sperm in my dads right nut.
71/64 is definitely too mainstream. I write only with irrational time signature... By the way, if you don't know what irrational time signature are you're not a REAL musician
I love how even a hardcore prog snob would have to enjoy Muse.
"There has never been a good song in 4/4"
"Steven Wilson never wrote a bad song"
Meanwhile, he wrote a ton of songs in 4/4 😂. Cracked me up
Cryptid Slayer never seen someone from the prog community say any of those things so idk what you mean
"Pink Floyd is amazing by default, they're the first prog band ever" oooh that hurt (coming from a King Crimson fan)
@fjf sjdnx they didn't go prog until 1973s Dark Side of the Moon, I'd argue. The earlier stuff with Syd Barrett really is more psychedelic rock and less prog.
Jasper well 1971
@@jassie138 the Atom Heart Mother suite (1970) and Echoes (1971) are fine examples of prog before Dark Side.
@@kaiguitarguymenard But that is still after KC's debut album.
I'm fan both Pf and Kc, but the best prog rock band of 70s was Genesis imo.
"Yeah, I kinda grew out of prog. Only listen to post-rock"
"...then I found this electronica."
Words of someone who just discovered Kid A by Radiohead.
Hahaha!! Around 16 years old I was a huge prog fan and then around 17 years old someone showed me Kid A by Radiohead which became my favorite album so yea, true story :P
You forgot "My heartbeat is in 23/16"
Bela Fleck is so not prog that you had to tell your mom twice
I'm a huge prog fan but this is so accurate. Can admit I'm like this sometimes
I used to be that guy. Somone should have slapped me.
*SLAP*
Better?
Akron162, I used to be that way... when I was a Metallica fan.
Music Lover so what do you say about good ole megadeth vs Metallica argument.
Same...
I'll pass it on in your honour when I think I detect a music snob. But especially prog in this case :^)
Dreamt Heater
Dreamth Eater
Dream The Ater
Dr. Eam Theater
Dream Evil.... oh wait.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand progressive music. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the complexities will go over a typical listener’s head. There’s also prog’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into its characterisation- its personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realise that they’re not just great songs- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike prog truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Porcupine Tree’s existential lyrics “Arriving somewhere but not here,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Steven Wilson’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Dream Theater tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

The Libertarian Metalhead prog is awesome
+tommywho924 That's the point lol.
I know, I thumbed up, just couldn't resist lol
I turned myself into Mike Portnoy Morty, I'm prog Rick!
"Genesis never the same after Phil Collins"

Sukrit Munshi, it is a good song. Not their best, but really good none the less.
At least didn't say The Spirit Carries On
I’ve been waiting for this for so long
Waiting to be born again
Longer than the new Tool album?
And all this time that's passed me by
I smell Jared Dines, just kidding, it was in the description
Bob George hmm i see a lotta. Ppl copy dines but this guy pulls it off well. And hes cool enough to admit its dines style =)

The Steven Wilson and Opeth jokes cracked me up
Moon Child mikeal and Steven best bromance in prog of all time!
Jelly Jelly real deal.
"No mom, Queen is not a prog band"
weeeeeeeell...
Yeah I'd say they are
@@neighborbruce they don't even have an specific genre at all, and they made some prog songs so...
@@neighborbruce maybe at the beginning but they weren’t for long
Their first album was early prog/metal, second one was similar but with more opera, and Sheer Heart Attack was proggy and experimented with a lot of different genres. After that, Queen went to a more radio-friendly sound. That's why I prefer their first three albums, although I still like a lot of their music after that too.
Thats not a prog band, thats polyrythmic synth jazz.
Indie Rock, Heavy Metal and Prog Rock are the most elitists genres. And they are like that because the fans were all bullied for their tastes so now they become the bullies.
Soooooo...... Tool?
The 1/5 time signature and 2112 intro had me dying
when u said pull me under I couldn't stop laughing hahah
I showed Kansas to a woman I met on tinder, she didn't even bother to listen the song till the end, later she left me without explanation, something is wrong in this world.
They're the vegans of music lol
Cristian López lmao in some way.....yes
If by "vegans" you mean "undisputed moral arbiters" then yes.
Cristian López Am I the only one who thinks that there are way more people complaining about pretentious vegans, than there are actually pretentious vegans? I'm a vegetarian, I don't shove morals down people's throats, in fact most of my meat eater classmates are the "moral and medical crusaders" here. I'm not saying that all meat eaters and non vegans(including myself) are judgmental of vegans, but I just think that the outrage against vegans is very disproportionate.
If you mean with better taste in life, then yes ;)
Meaning they strictly listen to boring/pretentious songs, annoying, and don't know what their missing in other types of genres? Yes.
"Is it even a song, if its less then 5 minutes?"
Couldn't agree more!
If it's less than four minutes, I consider it a short song. If it's over seven minutes, I consider it a slightly longer than average song. But once you hit that nine minute mark, you've reached the point where I think of it as a bit longer than slightly above average. And then there's 2112.
@@hyperbiscuit2284 and Shine on you Crazy Diamond, Dogs, Echoes...
Rock And Roll Guru and you know, stuff not by Pink Floyd
"Dude, you love Dream Theater too?! ...Yeah, yeah, Pull Me Under is a pretty good song..."
This is a great joke 😂
Yo want to hear something crazy, my friend legit told me that country musicians are generally more talented than any other genre. I brought up jazz, she said it didn't count because it wasn't popular, and then she told me that metal music doesn't take talent. Weird that she doesn't play any music..... This was especially insulting as I've been playing guitar(dappling in jazz, mostly the blues and rock) for sixish years, my other friend who's been playing the guitar for about as long, and my friend who's been a pianist for 10 years who plays jazz. We argued this for like half an hour and we still couldn't convince her. She also thinks that the members of the Zac brown band are more talented than the Beatles.
If this is a real interpretation of events, it sounds like she needs some serious intervention.
She’s wrong though, jazz is popular... with musicians...
A strong case of denial
+Become The Knight sadly this was very real, and I'm very disappointed in her.
Lothar Mallea Yes I also think songs like A Day in the Life, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Strawberry Fields Forever, and I am the Walrus are trite pop drivel.
Finally! It’s been way to long since I’ve seen a Jared Dines video....
....oh.
Trevor Ganoe I was thinking the same thing lmao
but jared dines is pretty much about a thing he calls djent which isn't that djenty or good, for meme material, and metalcore, u not listening to prog there probably
Basically anything a person argue about rock on the internet makes you a snob. And im not even joking
"Any new band I like automatically becomes a prog band"
"Prog fundamentally cannot be defined. If you define it, it is not Prog anymore."
Not sure if your joking on some of these. “Never say country in my presence again.” -Mike the Music Snob
😂😂😂
I love the subtle tool reference at 3:43.
"I don't know how to define it, you just know it when you listen to it. Can you describe its genre? If not then it's probably prog."
It's my definition of prog so far.
As a prog fan, so true
TOOL
Great! We need more of this! :D
Lol thanks dude \m/
I needed this laugh after such a shitty day. Thanks for being awesome, Mike!
Thanks for watching, Nickie \m/
I do a thing every year where I try to introduce my friends to a flood of prog music, I call it Progvember. This video could not have come out a better time.
take a shot everytime mike says prog
i might be just drunk enough to enjoy the latest pop music
In case your wondering, *cautiously looks around* 2112. Call me ;)
HEMISPHERES
These answers are all insufficient
Anything that isn’t Roll the Bones is a good answer lol
I remember my first reaction to metal:
"What the fuck is this shit?!"
And here I am, Listening to Trash/Power/Nu metal 24/7
"Of course I love music more than you. I love prog"
This needs to be a t-shirt Mike!
"and you are 2 minutes in 2112" got me.
Some of my least favorite nights have been spent with lots of musicians all talking shop with a side of "who can out-douche the other", seemingly. Don't even get me started on all the table-top drumming, 🙄.
As a drummer, I resemble this statement.
"No Patrick, mayonnaise is not Prog.
No Mention of TOOL???
BLASPHEMY!
What are the odds of you talking with your friends and family next to your mic? : )
2:01 Hahaaa!!! I knew exactly what the joke was gonna be and where you were going with it before you even finished man. great vid.
"*sigh* yeah, Pull Me Under is a great song man..." absolutely got me
2:01 - Dude, you love Dream Theater too? Yeah, Pull Me Under is a pretty good song man... This cuts so fucking deep, and I don't even own a Dream Theater album...
[but serious props to DT for titling their first compilation album "Greatest Hit (...And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs)"... Reminds me of Primus.
Yeah it pisses me off that people still ONLY know Pull me Under from Images & Words. Thats the only song that very clearly IS NOT prog.
Lmao "David Gilmour barely gets out of the Pentatonic Scale"
“It’s first song to be written in 1/5”
So prog it doesn’t make any musical sense
3:12 *looks at my copy of orchid, still life, and my arms your hearse with tears in my eyes*
This video ends in 4:4. That's fucking gold.
ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!!! "No mom..." OMG! This is fucking hilarious!
Finally! The waiting was really worth it!
"Queen is not a Prog band"
But... but Queen II...
@bober_ oooh, that one too
EXACTLY
David Bowie is actually probably the closest to prog you are gonna get without going prog imo. I mean his work with Fripp, Eno and other old prog artists show he was at least interested in that area of music.
That Pull me Under part was spot on. Amazing.
Please do more of these!!!
“Metropolis Pt2 is the most overrated album ever” that hurt my soul
Pffff.... ohhh god... that freak out in your eyes at the "what do you mean theres gonna be girls there ?!" Was just perfect!! Amazing 10/10 had to pause cause it hit me si hard xD
Love it! Well done sir!
Mike, you are my hero keep at it
sry pls forgiv
Aureph I forgive always. That's what Mike would want.
Very good video, I laughed a lot!
I love this! I've had all these arguments
Jesus christ this is painfully accurate. I hate when people say complexity makes you better.
Anyone notice at 4:00 and 4:05 he repeated the same clip? Lol love you Mike
Great video! 😝
I have a prog elitist quote you didn't say!
Hey guys, it's Mike, with Become The Night
I died at "yeah pull me under is a pretty good song, man!" XD
Hahaha awesome stuff. Pretty much sums up my musical life for the past 25+ years. Grew up in the 90's listening to Pop and mainstream stuff. Then I discovered Rush, Dream Theater and the prog addiction started.
You got to check out some Devin Townsend Project when you get the chance. Got to love his live performance at the Royal Albert Hall that all the metal fans react to on UA-cam these days.
I loved this!!! You should do it with other genres
I feel like all of this applies so well to Godspeed You! Black Emperor lol great video
Could Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band be the first prog album?
Kerim maybe
Yes, or Days of Future Passed. Prog isn't just odd time signatures and fantasy lyrics. That's a cliche.
"Do you even mode, bro?" - I almost died there!
Lol, this was great XD I see the Jared Dines style is strong with this one ;)
Every Tool fan gushing about the Fibonacci sequence
This was in the recommended list from a Ben E King. This pleases me greatly.
First song written in 1/5 lol
i had a boss that was an old school prog fan, huge gentle giant fan. i showed him mars volta, animals as leaders, tool, porcupine tree, meshuggah, mastodon, coheed and cambria, and a few others. he said none of these are prog. i said, "why, because it doesn't sound ridiculous?"
3:42 is this a reference to Cesaro Summability from Tool's AEnima?
This was so insulting on so many levels in the funniest way possible, and not even one mention of King Cri--
4:04 Huh, my CD is skipping.
No Mom "Supper's Ready" is not an invite for you to come over tonight!
I have no idea of music but this video is just so funny
This is awesome

"Hey dude what's your favorite Rush album? Literally any answer you give me will be insufficient." LMFAO
3:55 genius.
