🎨 PHTHALO GREEN 🎨
Hi there! In today's episode of The Paint Show we'll be looking at Phthalo Green by Schmincke Horadam watercolors!
This is a paint I initially didn't know what to do with. However, the more I used it, the more I "figured it out".
I already did a vid in the past on Phthalo Green Mixes. You can check it out here:

I really love this paint, and find it very versatile and useful (which is what I like about my paints).
And this is it, thank you for watching! I hope you enjoyed this one, and I'll talk to you again, real soon (:

It is really interesting that Schmincke's Phthalo Green is non-staining. In almost all other brands, it is one of the most heavily staining colours. Anyway, another good video, Liron. I like Phthalo Green a lot as a mixing green. How do you like Saunders Waterford paper?
I agree, It is very strange. I had to double check the Schmincke chart, but its right what Liron says: It is listed as practically non-staining. Could this be to the ox gall added? Also: Would you say its blue-green, as compared to the PG36 as yellow-green?
It could be to do with the ox gall that Schmincke adds to its paint. According to their literature, Schmincke adds different amounts of ox gall to different paints so the dispersion of each tube of paint is the same. My only reasoning could be that PG7 requires more ox gall than most pigments, thus making it less staining. This is just a guess, however. Another possibility is that it is not so finely milled, but Schmincke paints are usually very finely milled and this Phthalo Green does not look any different so I think that's an unlikely hypothesis.
It looks blue-green to me, especially compared to their Helio Green, which is more commonly known as Phthalo Green Yellow Shade, PG36.
Agree with both your comments 👍🏼
I need to read more about ox gall. I’m really undereducated.
Regarding Saunders-Waterford - I absolutely love it. It’s the one I’ve used the most for the past few months (:
Denise from In Liquid Color did a good video on ox gall, which might be helpful. glad you like the SW paper; I use it often too. I particularly like their rough paper.
For me Schmincke Horadam are the best Watercolors, maybe because I am a German 😂. I am happy that you discuss them in you series as well. Keep going.
Haha it’s one of my favorites. If I lived in Germany I’d have probably used them exclusively 😂 Thank you 😊🙏🏼
Liron Yanconsky Did you tried Faber Castell watercolor pencils? Also a German product. I have them and I love them. Steve Mitchell s latest video is a review of them. I only need more practise with them. I am a Schmincke and Faber-Castell nerd. Only for Acrylics I use Golden products. Don't know why, maybe because I watched too many American acrylic tutorials.
Hearing that people only like it for mixing is weird to me. I prefer to use this paint solely for its hue, it can look beautiful if you surround it with complimenting colours.
Thanks for the videos on this color. It's one of those colors we can easily dismiss, but you've shown it to be a valuable mixing color :)
Yes, I was really unsure about it when I got started with it, but now find it incredibly useful 😁🙏🏼
This is such an amazing video. I have phthalo green from schmincke and I don't necessarily use it too much. I tend to use perylene green for gray mixes, so I tend to forget that phthalo green is useful. This review helped out so much!
